2 Prolog Harry and Hermione apprehend a Death Eater. 5 In autumn, months after the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry and Hermione work as aurors for the Ministry of Magic. They have tracked down an unrepentant Death Eater in the mountains of Austria and now spring upon him and apparate back with him to the Ministry of Magic. Act 1 Harry and Hermione investigate dark magic at Hogwarts. 10 Harry and Hermione are urgently called to the repaired Hogwarts by Headmistress McGonagall. They apparate there and take a thestral carriage. They discuss how Harry and Ginny have grown apart, owing to his work and her schooling. He s nervous about seeing her again. At Hogwarts, they investigate the discovery of a Slytherin boy, Marcus Harrowmoor, in the dungeons in a weak, nearly comatose state, prone to fits of terror in his more lucid moments. Says McGonagall: Evil has come again to Hogwarts. An ornate tubular bell was found next to him near a small, secret cell that has been broken open. Horace Slughorn identifies the item as a temblor bell, a magical item that can break enchantments of imprisonment and which in this case is known as the Bell of Bracchio. No one knows what was imprisoned in the wall. Harry to Hermione: Our work here isn t finished. Harry visits with Ginny. Hermione recruits Ron. 15 Harry and Ginny are reunited and renew their affections but continue to struggle with Harry s need to bring unrepentant Death Eaters to justice. Harry and Hermione go to the Weasley magic shop to recruit Ron, who is running the shop with George. Ron agrees, partly because Fred s ghost haunts the place, playing practical jokes. The twins, in a sense, have never been closer. The trio follows the bell clue to Caberno Holp. 20 Hagrid tells the trio that the last known owner of the Bell of Bracchio was Caberno Holp, who helped Hagrid a year earlier by breaking an enchanted collar to free a dark wizard s captive bullroarer. Hagrid: You can use them to communicate over long distances! Loud, distant, bizarre howl. You really do need two of em, tho. Initially, Ron is cool to Hermione, but, over the course of the evening s conversation, she ends up draped across him in his embrace. Holp explains that the bell was stolen by, he suspects, Death Eater Augustus Rookwood, who disappeared after the Battle of Hogwarts. He seems to know more perhaps something about what the bell was used to free from the Hogwarts dungeon but he is frightened. Harry says he needs to keep the bell until the death is resolved and makes

3 plans to visit Holp again. Harry: He knows more than he s telling. I think he s suppressing a feeling a guilt. Ron: How can you tell? Harry: Because I know that feeling. The trio questions former Death Eaters. Draco is willing to help. 25 The trio tracks down and questions former Death Eaters about Rookwood and the bell, including the Malfoys, who are no help, altho Draco seems genuinely willing. Caberno Holp is found dead. A wraith escapes the trio. 30 Caberno Holp is found dead by Hagrid. When the trio investigates, Ron glimpses a strange spirit creature wafting thru the area. They pursue it madly, but it slips away. Draco Malfoy watches from a distance. Harry finds Snape s pen and memory of Lily studying the dark arts. 35 With a monster on the loose, McGonagall persuades Harry to teach a few Defense Against the Dark Arts classes while he is visiting Hogwarts, since they have yet to fill the position (other teachers alternate). In the DADA office, Harry finds some of Severus Snape s property being stored and discovers a secret cache that includes vials of memories that Snape had repressed. One is of James Potter at 17 or so apologizing to Snape and offering friendship and Snape refusing it. The other is of Snape discovering Lily Potter in early pregnancy studying a book of dark arts. He keeps the discovery to himself. He also discovers a fancy, snake-shaped quill pen in a case, stored with a warning: My bite is deadly. Draco tells Hermione about a creature found under Hogwarts. 40 Hermione is invited by owl to meet with Draco. He says that, during the Battle of Hogwarts, when he helped the Slytherins escape the dungeons, a couple of Slytherins discovered a magical prison cell. He has since learned that the Death Eaters got Slytherin student Marcus Harrowmoor to release its strange prisoner, and Marcus became its first victim. Hermione encourages Draco to meet with Harry, but he believes Harry will never forgive him. Draco is genuinely contrite about his role in Voldemort s return and agrees to work as an ally, but separately and in secret, so he may have more credit with former Death Eaters. Winter. Viktor Krum reports Death Eaters are resurrecting Bellatrix. 45 The season changes to winter.

4 Viktor Krum returns from Bulgaria, having tracked a Death Eater to Godric s Hollow. He has information talk being looser in Bulgaria that Death Eaters are trying to resurrect Bellatrix Lestrange. The heroes decide that releasing the monster under Hogwarts was a distraction. They discuss the events with McGonagall. She is at a loss, but very grateful for their assistance. Viktor asks Hermione to meet him in Hogsmeade later. She feels guilty about sneaking around behind Ron s back (first with Draco and now with an old boyfriend). Act 2 Marcus Harrowmoor improves and claims Dumbledore attacked him. 50 Marcus Harrowmoor recovers somewhat and claims that it was Albus Dumbledore that came at him out of the secret chamber in the wall. He doesn t remember why or how he used the Bell of Bracchio to break the enchantment that released Dumbledore. He is not very lucid and remains prone to fits of terror, and he mumbles something like catchall. Viktor and Hermione are attacked. Viktor is murdered. 55 Viktor gets Hermione to meet with him quietly in Hogsmeade and tests her feelings for Ron, which she affirms by going on rather gushingly. A strange spirit creature wafts thru the area. As Viktor and Hermione return to Hogwarts, they are ambushed by Death Eaters. They fight back valiantly, but Viktor is killed. Hermione is trapped, but Ron arrives in the nick of time, having followed her, and they barely escape. She asks him to forgive her sneaking around behind his back. He is a little put out, but assures her he was certain it had to do with her work as an auror, and he only followed her because she might be in danger. Harry encounters Albus Dumbledore. 60 In the nighttime corridors of Hogwarts, Harry encounters a man who looks just like Albus Dumbledore. It is not a ghost but a thing of solid flesh. However, the creature reacts to him more as an animal than as an old friend. It doesn t speak. Harry follows it to the infirmary, where Dumbledore finds what it has been looking for: it attempts to drain Marcus Harrowmoor of life. Marcus is utterly terrified by the creature. Grief-stricken to see this parody of his mentor, Harry uses a patronus spell, which inadvertently destroys it. At Christmas, the trio identifies the monster as a hexabuh. 65 With help from McGonagall, Ron and Hermione uncover documents that say that Gellert Grindelwald imprisoned a hexabuh under the school before his defeat by Dumbledore in The two congratulate each other and share a rather fiery kiss that breaks the last

5 bit of doubt and tension between them and makes them fall over. Then they take the documents to Harry. Harry and friends celebrate Christmas at the Weasley home. Arthur Weasley tells them that a hexabuh is a creature that can give shape to fears and make them flesh by draining a victim s life force. It is a more dangerous cousin of the boggart. Hermione and Ginny notice that something else is bothering Harry. Ron keeps Hermione from interfering and lets Ginny address it in her own way. Harry keeps his mother s dark arts a secret from Ginny. 70 A pan across documents on Harry s desk reveals that he has researched the specific spell his mother was studying and found that it required a human sacrifice. Altho Harry refuses to tell her why he is upset, Ginny comforts Harry in his confusion and grief. They agree to meet later in Hogsmeade. Neville provides an herbal remedy for the hexabuh. It s too late. 75 Prompted by McGonagall after research, Harry gets an herbal remedy of hexberry juice from Sprout and Neville to combat the hexabuh s effects. It is administered to Marcus Harrowmoor, but it is too late, and most of the effects are permanent. Madam Pomfrey: I m afraid he ll never be the same again. In a moment of greater lucidity, Marcus mumbles Be careful. Use the catch-all. Neville gives some hexberry juice to Harry, just in case. Ginny is attacked but is saved by Harry and Draco. 80 The strange spirit creature wafts thru Hogsmeade. Ginny is attacked by Death Eaters (not the spirit creature) outside The Three Broomsticks. She is saved by Harry who was coming to meet her and by Draco who was following the Death Eaters by use of a potion of stealth that he brewed. Harry is impressed and invites Draco to join them, but he declines. Later, Harry watches another of Snape s memories, this one of Snape becoming a Death Eater and mentioning that he believes another will be joining soon. They realize Ginny s fear will be used to make a body for Bellatrix. 85 Harry dismisses a DADA class where he is using a boggart (as Remus Lupin did). For a moment, he assumes the demeanor of Severus Snape as he inquires what no-good some second-years are up to, which makes them scamper. Ginny enters, and Harry purposely triggers the no-good in question, which releases the boggart. It transforms into Bellatrix Lestrange before Ginny. She immediately dispatches it and remarks that she was confronted with one in the wild two months earlier. Harry, Ginny, Hermione, and Ron visit Hagrid to ask about wild boggarts. They deduce that the Death Eaters arranged the release of the hexabuh as part of a plan to give shape

6 and flesh to Bellatrix Lestrange using Ginny s fears (and tested her with the wild boggart). Bellatrix must have created a horcrux before the Battle of Hogwarts, and she is surely directing the Death Eaters. The heroes search for Bellatrix s horcrux. 90 Since Harry is no longer a horcrux himself, he doesn t have any special ability to find Bellatrix s. The heroes decide to go to former Death Eaters to try to find out what Bellatrix s horcrux was. With reluctant permission of the Malfoys and the help of Draco, Harry searches the Malfoy house for any items Bellatrix may have hidden there when Voldemort used it as a base. They find nothing but a strange crystal knickknack, which they leave. When Harry asks if the knickknack might be the catch-all mentioned by Marcus Harrowmoor, Lucius Malfoy informs him that a catch-all is a magic lantern-like device that can capture spirit creatures and also will return to its owner on demand so that the owner need not put himself in harm s way to do the catching. Meanwhile, searching the Lestranges abandoned house (the same house Bellatrix grew up in), Ron cleverly finds a small box near a child s hidey hole. He and Hermione reason that the box must have been retrieved shortly before the Battle of Hogwarts and contained a keepsake that Bellatrix made into a horcrux. Spring. Hermione deduces that Bellatrix s horcrux is a watch. 95 Spring arrives. Following up on rumors, Harry finds a Death Eater in Azkaban who tells him cryptically that Bellatrix boasted privately of getting Voldemort s help to create a horcrux using a personal item belonging to her sworn enemy. It was the perfect little memento of her life and times, which she hid. Then he remembers that Bellatrix was wearing a bracelet that seemed to be new to her. Hermione reasons that Bellatrix probably picked up the bracelet in Knockturn Alley when she hid her horcrux and that the horcrux, which must be small, might also be a piece of jewelry. The impression left in the box Ron found suggests that it might have held a pocket watch. They talk to Narcissa Malfoy, who confirms that Bellatrix had acquired an antique bracelet in Knockturn Alley shortly before the battle. Draco joins the heroes. Harry finds Bellatrix s horcrux: Sirius Black s watch. 100 In Diagon Alley, the heroes pass by Fred chatting up a pretty witch. When she says that she would go out with him if only he weren t a ghost, he replies, Have I got someone for you to meet... The heroes search Knockturn Alley, where someone nasty notes their presence, and Harry finds a clock and watch shop where the proprietor reacts guiltily upon seeing him.

7 He is Argus Filch s identical cousin Spelvin, which causes Harry some confusion. Family resemblance is very strong in the Filches, Spelvin says, pointing to a photo of his identically hideous sister Relmyra. Harry peruses the many clocks and watches in the shop and uses clever psychology and magic to locate a hidden pocket watch (marked Not for Sale ) inscribed to Sirius Black (stolen by Bellatrix from her cousin when they were children). But, having touched the watch, Spelvin is overcome by an imperious curse placed on it by Bellatrix to force the victim to defend the watch with his life, and he attacks with a magic saber. Harry dispatches him humanely but firmly and somewhat comically. Death Eaters attack the heroes and kidnap Ginny. 105 Harry, Hermione, Ron, Draco, and Ginny contemplate destroying the pocket watch horcrux without a basilisk fang or the sword of Godrick Gryffindor handy. Suddenly, the heroes are confronted by the Carrows, who were alerted by the nasty person in Knockturn Alley. While they fight, Rookwood snatches Ginny from behind. The Carrows apparate away. The trio and Draco are left behind at a complete loss. Harry is devastated. Death Eaters create a body for Bellatrix. The heroes search for Ginny. 110 On a lonely moor, the Death Eaters imprison Ginny in a painting (Andromeda chained to the rock). Meanwhile, Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Draco search for where the Death Eaters have taken Ginny. They apparate to Riddle Mansion but find nothing in the cemetery (where Voldemort was reborn) or the house. On the moor, the Death Eaters release the hexabuh from the catch-all (which returned to the Carrows when it had caught the hexabuh after Marcus Harrowmoor had released it but not before the hexabuh made Marcus fear of Dumbledore into a fleshy creature). Ginny s fears on seeing the strange and ethereal hexabuh generate a body in the form of Bellatrix Lestrange. The Lestrange-monster weakens Ginny and nearly drives her mad (just as the Dumbledore-monster did to Marcus). Elsewhere, Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Draco continue to search for Ginny. They apparate to the Lestrange house but find nothing. Then they try Godric s Hollow, where Harry s parents were buried, to no avail. Bellatrix is resurrected. Draco helps find Ginny. 115 With the Death Eaters help, Bellatrix s spirit (the strange, wafting, spirit creature lurking around Hogsmeade) possesses the Bellatrix body, and she is herself again.

8 Meanwhile, the heroes try to think of more places Bellatrix might go. Draco hits upon the right location: a lonely moor where Voldemort sometimes spent time scheming with Bellatrix. Draco is frightened, but Harry encourages him by saying they need his help to save Ginny. Act 3 Harry and the others rescue Ginny using the Bell of Bracchio. 120 Harry and the others arrive. Still weak, Bellatrix immediately escapes with the help of the Death Eaters, leaving Harry to face the hexabuh. It drains him and makes his greatest fear flesh: a Death Eater who reveals herself to be Lily Potter. He destroys it, but not before Ginny sees it. Hermione orders the catch-all to recapture the hexabuh and return to her. Ron rescues Ginny from the painting using the Bell of Bracchio, which makes the very ground quake (hence the temblor part of temblor bell ). Harry catches her and gives her Neville s hexberry juice remedy to revive her. She urges him to take some too, but he only takes a sip and gives the rest to her. Draco discovers why the spot was meaningful to Bellatrix. Near a copse of trees, a simple stone marks her mother s grave. Harry thanks Draco for all his help and gives Snape s snake pen to him. It isn t really mine to give, but I think he would have wanted you to have it. He warns him about the My bite is deadly note. The heroes return Ginny to Hogwarts and try to destroy the horcrux. 125 The heroes return to Hogwarts so Ginny can recover in the infirmary. Arthur and Molly come. Ginny herself is guilt-ridden at having been used again as she was used to open the Chamber of Secrets. Harry tells her he loves her. Harry warns McGonagall that Bellatrix is back and will find a way into the school to get the horcrux. But the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets was disposed of during the cleanup of Hogwarts by the Ministry of Magic with Harry s help. The only fangs still infused with venom were locked away, and they have no time to retrieve them. McGonagall remarks that Snape wanted to get rid of the basilisk years before, and that he joked that he should write a poison pen letter to the Ministry of Magic about it. Harry realizes that Snape s ink pen contains venom he took from the basilisk. Bellatrix and the Death Eaters attack. Harry is injured. 130 Harry and friends go to Malfoy Mansion to retrieve the poison pen from Draco. Bellatrix and three other Death Eaters find them thru the crystal knickknack (a spier, which is an object for spying) and attack. Ron, Hermione, and Draco fight them heroically, but Harry, still weak from the hexabuh attack, is injured.

9 Draco destroys the horcrux. Bellatrix is captured. 135 It is Draco who destroys the pocket watch horcrux by stabbing it with the poison pen of his mentor, Severus Snape, cementing his redemption. Harry tricks Bellatrix into dislodging a piece of stone architecture that injures and traps her, allowing him to capture her. Ron and Hermione hold hands and fight back-to-back. One of the Carrows is killed by the poison pen accidentally, but the other and Rookwood escape. Epilog Harry realizes that his mother used dark magic only to protect him. 140 At Hogwarts, while Ginny recovers, Harry confesses what he s learned about his mother. He has deduced that Snape joined Voldemort believing that Lily would soon join him also, but Snape was wrong and was trapped. Harry speaks frankly with McGonagall about the human sacrifice spell his mother studied. She says that this was something Dumbledore suspected but feared telling Harry. She pulls down a book from Dumbledore s private collection that says that a sacrifice that is a willing sacrifice can provide protection that is proof against a specific enemy for long after. They realize that, rather than protecting herself with the death of another, Lily cast it on baby Harry to ensure protection for him against Voldemort. This is the reason she was able to deflect Voldemort s killing curse back on him and save baby Harry. And her sacrifice continued to protect him from Voldemort as long as he was a minor living with family (the Dursleys). Harry decides to stay on as DADA master for a while. 145 Ginny urges Harry to continue his auror work, but he says he can t leave her yet. Harry stays on as DADA master for last three months of the year and believes he may stay the next year as well and makes plans to fix up his parents house in Godric s Hollow. Draco becomes the new Flying master. He and Harry go from being bitter enemies to house rivals, cheering on their respective houses at quidditch.
