Broadband wireless access a brief summary The world of mobile telecommunication is on its way to change from pure voice applications to high speed data networks. The evolution of wireline based IP/ Ethernet, DSL, fibre to the home, and powerline communications is stimulating fixed broadband data and will strongly leverage mobile applications. Availability of seamless mobile broadband data anywhere anytime will revolutionise and foster new service applications in the field of communication, industry, transportation and health care. WLAN/Wi-Fi already provides real broadband wireless experience to nomadic users, and Carrier Class WiMAX / 3G will enhance broadband wireless, pushing for real mobile high speed access and guaranteed quality of service. Communication services will be combined in many different ways to offer high speed digital data to industry, office and residential users. Desktop computers, television sets, notebooks and handheld terminals will turn into multifunctional devices for internet and access, VPN connectivity, instant messaging, video conferencing, media streaming, interactive gaming, VoIP, E-Commerce, telemetry, remote biometric analysis and many more applications. Developed countries usually have a fairly good wireline Metro Area infrastructure. Fibre based networks provide E1/T1 access for industrial and office environments. CATV and plain old telephone lines provide last mile broadband DSL access for residential users, and fibre to the home is currently being heavily promoted in some countries. Still there is a demand for wireless broadband access in remote and urban areas. The key driver for this is mobility along with the expectation of the end users to have broadband data available at their finger tips wherever they are roaming. On top of mobile services, fixed wireless is an attractive alternative to delivering competitive broadband data to underserved areas in emerging and developed markets. Thanks to its nature, it is straightforward to deploy and does not involve the prohibitive costs of laying cable networks. Today three major technologies for broadband wireless access can be identified: WLAN/ Wi-Fi WiMAX. 3G Systems (UMTS, CD MA 2000, TD-SCDMA) Wi-Fi networks (the brand name for WLAN) are focussed on public hot spots, offices and the industrial environment. City-wide meshed networks will play an important role in municipal applications for both public authorities and private users. Wi-Fi has experienced fast but unorganised growth and is mostly a rather patchy solution. Roaming is possible within single Wi-Fi networks but is not supported on a general scale. Nevertheless, WLAN networks have gained wide acceptance and proven to be an efficient solution for short distance wireless coverage. Wi-Fi will also be a versatile option to divert WiMAX and 3G services into picocell areas. Due to the unlicensed spectrum utilised, Wi-Fi may suffer from RF-interference of co-located systems operating in the same ISM band. Moreover, limitations exist with regard to QoS. However, if Wi-Fi deployment is well co-ordinated, disturbances can be reduced to a minimum. 6 HUBER+SUHNER
Broadband wireless access a brief summary ITU IMT-2000 CDMA 2000 WiMAX (OFDMA TDD WMAN) IEEE/WiMAX Forum 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) UMTS 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) UWC-136 US/Europe ETSI SMG US TR45.3 US T1P1 US TR46 TD-SCDMA CATT/TD-SCDMA Forum DECT+ ETSI Project WiMAX ( Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access ) and future 3G systems will be the real next quantum leap to deliver wireless broadband for business, SoHo (Small office Home office) and residential users. WiMAX aims to provide broadband last mile access for fixed (IEEE ) as well as mobile (802.16e- 2005) wireless services and long range point to point RF and millimetre wave backhauling. It addresses the consumer, office and industry markets. WiMAX networks will be operating in licensed frequency bands to ensure high speed access at an appropriate QoS. Similar to the Wi-Fi Alliance, the industry has founded the WiMAX Forum, a non-profit organisation which promotes WiMAX and certifies interoperability of WiMAX products and network components in accordance with IEEE and ETSI HiperMAN wireless MAN standards. Standardisation and interoperability are key to the success of WiMAX as this will ensure a competitive environment and drive down equipment costs through integration and economies of scale in mass production. Possibly, WiMAX will become a member of the IMT-2000 family besides the existing 3G technologies. Currently ITU WP 8F has suggested to include WiMAX standard OFDMA TDD WMAN as a possible radio air interface for IMT This would allow WiMAX to have the same access to spectrum as todays pure 3G networks and would support WiMAX as an alternative wireless technolgy besides 3G. 3G systems are already being rolled out on a larger scale and will offer initial medium speed data. A migration path for 3G evolution towards real broadband data is already being defined, and one can expect Wi-Fi, WiMAX and 3G systems to complement each other, finally converging into a 4G world. 8 WLAN Wireless Local Aerea Network Versatile solution for public hot spots, wireless meshed networks, industrial applications and office communication. Throughout the recent years, IEEE Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) have become a popular and widely adopted means for mobile data transmission in various applications. Initially deployed as a picocell wireless extension of Ethernet in offices, hot spot and industrial WLAN networks have grown from local applications to city-wide municipal networks delivering state of the art service to private and public users. Wireless networks for data transmission so-called Wireless Local Area Networks have been under discussion for years, but only since the publication of the b standard enabling raw transmission rates of 11 Mbps has this vision become a reality. The evolution of new technologies from a to g have increased data throughput to 54 Mbps, enabling real time video streaming and rich content applications. With n making use of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology, capacity will be increased even 8 HUBER+SUHNER
WLAN Wireless Local Aerea Network more up to several 100 Mbps. Wireless local area networks operate in non-licensed frequency bands from 2.4 GHz to and sub-bands from 5.15 to GHz. Frequency allocation differs slightly in different countries; detailed information is available from the national regulation authorities/ OFCOMs. A brief overview is given on page 13. WLANs offer versatile solutions for remote access to important information and data. Nomadic applications such as real time access to presentations or video streaming during meetings, data gathering and exchanging on production lines or during service calls, control of warehouse logistics flows and setting up of ad hoc networks and many more can be realised thanks to the straightforward deployment of WLANs. Hospitals utilise WLANs for fast and mobile access to patient records by doctors, nurses and technicians. Due to their limited transmit power, indoor WLAN systems may be even used in intensive care stations without providing harmful interference to the sensitive medical equipment. Of course, WLANs can also be utilised in outdoor environments, for example for providing Internet and access on trains and subways, backhauling high rate data traffic between buildings or connecting to remote video surveillance cameras. Supporting various applications at low to medium costs of ownership along with the capability of rapid deployment has led to the tremendous success of WLAN networks. HUBER+SUHNER 9
WiFi system architecture and network coverage WiFi - networks offer versatile solutions for peer-to-peer point-to-multipoint meshed point-to-point backhauling networks. Ad-Hoc/Peer to Peer Networks Given that there are three independent frequency channels at 2.4 GHz and even more at 5 GHz in most countries, WiFi can be used to set up picocell networks having a frequency reuse factor of min. 3 based on a three sector arrangement. This will allow high density metro area networks supporting seamless roaming. Users communicate directly with the other users subscriber equipment without routing traffic through a backbone network. The signal transmission distance relies on equipment performance and the local environment. Point to Multipoint The WiFI network provides a cellular type of coverage connecting multiple buildings and multiple users with a centralised WLAN base station infrastructure. This is often also referred to as last mile access. The simplest way to realise Point to Multipoint coverage is to use omni-directional antennas. When capacity needs to be increased, additional access points will have to be fitted and directional antennas will have to be used to divide coverage into different sectors. Peer-to-peer networks Wireless network: point to multipoint b/g a/h WLAN picocell networks HUBER+SUHNER
WiFi system architecture and network coverage Meshed networks Meshed networks utilise a number of access points, each being interconnected to its neighbouring access point. This allows dynamic routing of data packets through the system between any of the subscribers. The network is self-learnable and data paths are chosen according to optimum signal to interference conditions to ensure fast and reliable transmission. Meshed networks are being increasingly deployed in large scale metro areas to facilitate access to mobile applications anywhere anytime. Point to point network optimisation of wireless networks, various antenna platforms can be utilised: Omni-directional (radio signal emitted over 360 degrees), Directional (targeted emissions) and also Active (boosted receive signal). Point to point radio bridges are used to backhaul local LANs to backbone networks or to interface between separate LANs at different locations (i.e. between buildings). This eliminates the need for expensive cable or fibre interconnect options and costly truck roll. Stand alone wireless network with access point Finally, the simplest WLAN network consists merely of a single access point or WLAN router which provides multiple users with a wireless connection to the fixed network (e.g. DSL). The planning and installation of Wireless LANs is a routine process for established IT contractors, wireless Internet service providers and system integrators. Network enhancement is possible through the choice of appropriate antennas and antenna sites. RF propagation characteristics, security improvements, optimised performance or site aesthetics are key concerns for which external antennas can offer an optimum solution. For professional Wireless network: point to point Stand-alone wireless network with access point HUBER+SUHNER 11
Possible applications of wireless local area networks The introduction of WLANs offers users the ability to cross boundaries defined by fixed networks. WLAN solutions overcome the physical limitations of fixed networks and provide a high degree of flexibility at moderate capital expenditures. Flexibility In many enterprises, workers from different disciplines self-organise and re-organise in specific teams. The ability to scale a fixed network in line with dynamic business needs presents a burden not just in terms of time, but also capital investment and operating expenses. This is often a key factor in serviced offices and leased premises. Building and planning restrictions This enables a radio connection between PC workstations. The access point acts as a gateway between the wireless clients and the existing Ethernet. Within the access point cell, the local fixed network can be utilised. A direct benefit is that the existing net can be simply and rapidly extended at minimum cost. Public access (open access) Access points in the public domain offer a simple and quick method of providing access to the Internet and other varied information sources. Within listed or older buildings such as universities, new cable management systems and wall penetrating solutions to support new or existing wired LANs are impossible to implement in compliance with local planning laws. In commercial and private rented premises, the owner can often demand and charge for removal of equipment installed by the outgoing tenant. Mobile access to corporate information In many industries, mobile employees require access to their corporate data networks. From warehousemen, service engineers to sales representatives, rapid connectivity to corporate information and systems irrespective of location is a competitive advantage. Costs High-bandwidth fibre optic cabling provides an alternative to building interconnections. A complex cabling solution becomes increasingly more complicated. Advantages of Wiress LANs: Flexible and rapid exchange of data Shared usage of costly resources (e.g. printers) Convenient access to and Internet High speed connectivity (evolution to 54 MBit/s) From the many advantages of WLAN, some typical applications and network configurations include: Wireless connection to an existing LAN Typical applications: Retail outlets Restaurants Hot Spots Hospitals Offices University campuses Manufacturing facilities Historical and protected buildings Temporary networks 12 HUBER+SUHNER

WLAN Standards Why standards? Interoperability of components and networks is key to the success of WLAN. Common standards protect end users from restrictive proprietary technologies and facilitate maximum competition. A cornerstone in wireless network development has been the establishment of an open standard known as On this basis, customers are able to select and purchase equipment appropriate to their requirements and have the confidence that they will work seamlessly together without being tied to a single source. This compatibility is guaranteed and controlled through the Wi-Fi certification and trademark scheme. Look for the WiFi-certificate! Wi-Fi is the compatibility brand for access points and subscriber equipment from the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA). This WECA Wi-Fi certification guarantees users compatibility of IEEE and a, b, g, n products from different sources. The goal is to establish and maintain the Wi-Fi quality mark for WLAN products on a worldwide basis. 18 Antenna technology Our antennas are available in the following polarisation schemes: Linear (standard WLAN technology) The radio waves leave the antenna in a direction with respect to the horizon. Right and left hand circular (used in high reflection areas to reduce interference): The radio waves rotate along their wavelength in a 360 degree right or left handed direction. Cross polarised (dual slant, -) Are mainly used in mobile radio systems: Two transmit/ receive paths exist for radio signals. Diversity systems are easily implemented with such antennas. It is important to ensure that the transmit and receive polarisation are identical for either side of the WLAN system. With different polarisations, an increase in system loss must be taken into account. Radiation patterns The radiation characteristic of an antenna is represented through a simple diagram. Instead of the separate and, modern test ranges produce a 3-dimensional antenna patterns from where the and patterns can be extracted Omni antenna Direction antenna HUBER+SUHNER
Antenna technology Beam width of the antenna A further important antenna feature is the beamwidth. This can be calculated from the, and is defined at the point where the radiated power has fallen by half. This is known as the 3dB point, and is calculated by the following method: Extend a line from the centre of the patterns to the first intersection of the antenna energy and the -3dB point. This defines the angle, i.e. 30 degrees. Extend a second line, intersecting the antenna energy at the next -3dB point, this defines the second angle, i.e. -30 degrees. The sum of these two measurements is the antenna beamwidth, which for the above example would be 60 degrees. This method can be used for both the Horizontal and Vertical. Antenna gain is a measure of how energy is confined into a certain direction. Whilst an ideal antenna with 0 dbi gain radiates energy in all directions (isotropically), a directional antenna concentrates the same amount of energy into a section of the space on a specific heading. For the sake of understanding, an isotropic element can be simply compared to a balloon. When pressed from above and below the typical characteristic of an omni antenna is represented. With directional antennas, one of these two ovals is directed with a reflector in a single direction. When the gain is given in respect to a Isotropic element, the unit is specified as dbi, when in respect to a half wave dipole, the unit is dbd (dbi = dbd db) db beam width Isotropic element 0 dbi Towards omni antenna Towards direction antenna Omni antenna characteristic e.g. 2 dbi Comparison power vs. dbm -60 Direction antenna characteristic e.g. 9 dbi Transmitted power Logarithmic unit 1 mw 0 dbm 1.25 mw 1 dbm 1.6 mw 2 dbm 2 mw 3 dbm 4 mw 6 dbm 10 mw 10 dbm 20 mw 13 dbm 32 mw 15 dbm 100 mw 20 dbm 200 mw 23 dbm 400 mw 26 dbm 800 mw 29 dbm 1000 mw 30 dbm dbi of antenna with reference to an ideal isotropic antenna dbd of antenna with reference to a half-wave dipole dbm Power referenced to 1 milli watt db Logarithmic unit Useful db values: + / 3dB represents a doubling or halving of the power As a rule of thumb 6dB represents a doubling in link distance HUBER+SUHNER 19

Complementary RF products Power splitters Description HUBER+SUHNER Power Splitters are low loss reactive splitters for the distribution of RF signals to radio transceiver antenna systems including radiating cables. The RF power is evenly split to all outputs with excellent amplitude and phase balance. A broad range of power splitters with N and DIN 7/16 connectors has been designed to split even high power multi-carrier signals of all existing mobile phone systems. Multiband units simplify logistics for OEMs and multi-system operators. 400 MHz range products support security and emergency systems like TETRA and Tetrapol. Smaller units with SMA connectors can be provided for picocell wireless communication systems (WLL, WLAN, ISM, WiFi, WiMax). Features superior RF performance, low VSWR and Insertion Loss PIM level typically -150 dbc (3rd order, N and 7/16 connector styles) available in the frequency range from 360 MHz to 6 GHz 2-way, 3-way and 4-way configurations DC continuity for outdoor powering rugged and reliable design waterproof IP 65 (N and 7/16 connector styles) outdoor installation supported by special outdoor units with protective cover Electrical data Frequency range RL (Return loss) IL (Insertion loss) PIM RF average power Nominal split loss Isolation between ports Requirements according to shown product specification, basic range from 380 MHz to 6 GHz refer to shown product specification 0.2 db max. refer to shown product specification according to product detail specification (data sheet) 500 W for N and 7/16 styles 100 W for SMA styles 2 way splitters 3.0 db 3 way splitters 4.8 db 4 way splitters 6.0 db 2 way splitters 6.0 db 3 way splitters 9.5 db 4 way splitter 12.0 db 148 HUBER+SUHNER

Complementary RF products Lightning protectors Solution for wireless communication systems The frequency bands of commercial interest between 2.4 GHz and 6 GHz are experiencing a boom of new radio applications. HUBER+ SUHNER have now developed lightning protection components for such applications which satisfy the requirements of the next few years. New technologies are giving consideration to the trend to develop ever smaller and more sensitive communication devices operating at higher frequencies. Exposed installations call for increased protection Damage to or destruction of transmitter and receiver systems by lightning are a well-known problem. Antennas with active outdoor units (base station) are typically installed at elevated points to achieve optimal wave propagation. As a result, such installations are particularly exposed and therefore prone to electromagnetic pulses such as those generated by lightning. They have always been protected against possible destruction. The most important related rules are recorded in international standards according to IEC Radio communication systems are inherently at risk because they are connected to transmission lines that are always exposed to lightning during thunderstorms and therefore capture energy by induction or direct hits. In wireless telecommunications, the effects of system downtime / availability are especially crucial besides the actual physical damage or destruction caused. The significance of appropriate protection is rising continuously, since the sensitivity of electronic circuits is constantly increasing as miniaturisation progresses. Moreover, the risk of damage to network operators is increasing as a result of network extensions and the related rise in the number and exposure of base stations. Most important for making the right selection of suitable lightning protection components is knowledge of the interfaces. All incoming and outgoing lines require protection. The passive antenna is connected by a coaxial line with the outdoor unit (base station). Highly suitable protective components for this application include quarter-wave protectors of the Series 3400 or gas capsule protectors of the Series The outdoor unit (base station) may also be connected with the indoor unit through a data line (twisted pair line, TP). For this, a data line protector of Series 3414 will be found to be an ideal solution. In connection with active outdoor electronic devices, it is common to additionally transmit a supply voltage through the line between the indoor and outdoor unit (base station). This requirement is supported by the Power over Ethernet (PoE) functionality of the Series With regard to performance and design, mechanical design and material selection, these products fully meet the proven quality standards of HUBER+SUHNER. Ruggedness, reliability and long-term stability can be taken for granted, a fact underscored by the typical LP ten-year warranty. These protection components can all be applied also in other areas such as defence, security, navigation, etc. GPS 150 HUBER+SUHNER

Complementary RF products Lightning protectors Selection Guidance Properties of available HUBER+SUHNER protection principles Quarter-wave protectors (series 3400) Quarter-wave surge arrestors offer unsurpassed protection and RF transmission performance as well as mechanical ruggedness and reliability. They are capable of discharging both partial lightning currents up to 100 ka (pulse shape 10/350 µs) and coupled-in interference currents (pulse shape 8/20 µs). Their residual pulse voltage and energy values are very low and are better than the requirements of radio systems. The operating bandwidth of these protective components has ceased to be a problem today. Only DC cannot be simultaneously transmitted. broadband and narrowband units available maintenance-free highest surge current handling capability N: 50 ka (8/20 µs test pulse) lowest residual surge pulse voltage and energy best IM performance DC/AC powering via coaxial cable not possible products with integrated high-pass filter with even further reduced residual pulse (series 3407) available Slim Line gas capsule protectors (series 3406) Compared to quarter-wave protectors, gas capsule protectors have the advantage of offering broadband capabilities. This enables low frequencies of any value to be transmitted simultaneously with DC currents. The protection characteristics are a function of the gas capsule selected. wide-band operation DC to 5.8 GHz surge current handling 10 ka once and 5 ka gas capsule fix installed slim inline design DC/AC powering via coaxial cable possible bulkhead mounting/grounding multiple 152 HUBER+SUHNER
Complementary RF products Lightning protectors Data line protectors (series 3414) Data line protectors are surge voltage protection components for symmetric data lines (twisted pair lines). They have been optimised for very fast Ethernet data transmission and offer excellent protection thanks to their hybrid design. 154 Complementary RF products Cables/pictails Assemblies to customer specification Cables: corrugated, RG types and halogen free Enviroflex Connectors: TNC, N, SMA for all types of RF cables. Special variants for use with reverse TNC and SMA The RF interconnect path between antenna and the access point is critical, using low cost or poorly manufactured cable and connectors can quickly. eliminate any advantage that the antenna gain allows. In todays RF broadband networks, established flexible coax cables are used (RG214, RG 223 or RG316). As an alternative to the RG variants, HUBER+SUHNER can offer a full range of Enviroflex coaxial cables. These deliver the same electrical performance as RG types, yet are halogen free and environmentally friendly. We recommend the use of high quality interconnect to further improve system performance and maximise the benefits of Antenna replacement. Complete cable assemblies prevent common failures often introduced through dirt or dampness when terminating on-site. For outdoor systems, it is considered best practice to over wrap connector joints with self-amalgamating tape or proprietary waterproofing material.
