Imagine a world without wires Sensors energized by the light they collect. Switches powered by the motion used to operate them. Airwave... Wireless. Batteryless. Limitless.

Sustainability made simple In today s climate of conservation, a global focus on preserving energy inspires building designers to embrace new technologies that contribute to LEED certification. Airwave is truly a sustainable innovation; it decreases initial construction costs, minimizes operational expenses, and lessens environmental impact by reducing battery use and copper wiring infrastructure. Airwave is an affordable, dynamic and eco-sensitive solution that delivers maximum design flexibility and energy savings to meet the needs of virtually any environment and the people within them. Powered by organic energy The latest addition to a growing family of innovative Ledalite technologies, Airwave wireless controls represent a giant leap forward in flexibility, sustainability and profitability. Add Airwave to your next project and break free from a wired world. By using organic sources of solar and kinetic energy which naturally occur in the space, Airwave provides wireless individual personal control, daylight harvesting, occupancy sensing, and full range dimming for private offices, open plan areas, conference rooms, and other spaces where the ability to control energy and lighting are essential. 1

How it works Solar powered photosensor The solar powered photosensor harnesses energy from natural light via integrated miniature photovoltaic cells and constantly monitors illumination levels. When ambient light increases, the sensor sends a signal to the transceiver, gradually dimming the lights, and automatically saving energy. Intelligent transceiver The hub of the system, the Airwave transceiver receives wireless signals from each device and commands the associated light fixtures to turn on, turn off or dim. Occupancy sensor The Airwave transceiver also receives signals from, and provides power to, 24V wired and Philips Ledalite or other Enocean-enabled 315MHz wireless occupancy sensors, thereby eliminating the need for additional power packs and low voltage wiring. Occupancy sensors significantly enhance energy savings by automatically dimming down and then turning lights off when the space is vacant. 2 Kinetic energy switch Kinetic handheld remote The wireless Airwave wall switch and remote handheld control are completely battery-free. They are powered by the simple motion of pushing the switch; creating just enough kinetic energy to send a wireless signal to the transceiver.

The future demands response The demand for electricity varies with the time of day and season. Peak demand periods often require utilities to operate temporary energy sources that are both inefficient and costly. Demand Response load shedding programs help reduce electrical loads during peak periods and can result in significant savings of both energy and dollars. Every Airwave transceiver is embedded with four levels of Demand Response intelligence that automatically adjust lighting levels when load-shedding commands are received. Whether these signals are initiated by the utility in response to the demand for electricity or by the building management system as part of an energy savings program, Airwave wirelessly reacts by slowly dimming and/or turning off lighting loads to dramatically and immediately reduce the lighting energy. ENERGY CONSUMPTION Reduction of load capacity requirement DR event TIME OF DAY Energy savings Lighting systems in commercial buildings waste energy and can cause interruptions in the electrical grid when dimming controls are not used effectively. Dimming luminaires during peak consumption periods can reduce the demand for electricity by up to 30% to help save energy. 7

Boardroom Getting together will never be the same. Real 3-way dimming Daylight sensors Occupancy sensors Airwave advantage From multimedia presentations and formal meetings, to training seminars, videoconferences and special events, boardrooms serve a wide spectrum of purposes from one day to the next. Utilizing a combination of just a few wireless Airwave devices, the room s lighting system can now be as dynamic as the space itself. Providing true three-way dimming control, Airwave switches and remotes can be used in concert for a myriad of custom functions. The glass wall mounted switches or the remote can be used to adjust both the recessed and suspended luminaires; delivering increased screen/ whiteboard visibility, and targeted lighting for reading or writing tasks. Additional possibilities With so much daylight penetrating this environment, equipping the suspended luminaire with Ledalite s discreet Response Daylight sensor saves money by keeping energy use to a minimum when there is sufficient daylight in the space. By simply adding inexpensive occupancy sensors (powered by the Airwave transceiver), savings can be significantly enhanced by automatically dimming down and then turning lights off when the space is vacant. Featured luminaires In combination with Airwave, both Float TM suspended luminaires and Pique TM recessed 1'x1' micro fixtures maximize energy savings while enhancing an environment that is efficient and visually comfortable for a variety of situations. Using Ledalite s advanced MesoOptics nanotechnology, these luminaires create a stimulating environment with an ideal balance of brightness, control and uniformity without glare or harsh shadows. 12 Private office Custom lighting from coffee to closing time. Daylight sensors Energy savings Automatic dimming Personal control Occupancy sensors Airwave advantage The private office is a critical environment. Typically located at the perimeter of a space, private offices are places of sanctuary, productivity and privacy. Due to its location, use, occupancy and high turnover, a private office requires very different lighting solutions than an open area. Airwave addresses these issues by delivering individual control with a kinetically powered wireless and battery-free personal handheld device. Additional kinetic energy wall switches can be added anywhere in the space without hardwiring, and attached to virtually any solid surface including glass, concrete, wood or brick. Additional possibilities With ample amounts of daylight provided by the large windows in the office, discreet Response Daylight sensors maximize savings by automatically dimming when there is enough illumination detected in the space. Response sensors are optionally integrated in all Ledalite suspended luminaires, and require no adjustments or on-site commissioning. Response photosensors set the maximum output based on the ambient lighting condition. Although users have the ability to dim lights, energy savings are ensured by the fact that light levels cannot be increased beyond photosensor set points. An occupancy sensor can be installed to automatically dim down and then turn the lights off when the office is vacant. Featured luminaires Offering broad semi-indirect lighting distribution and efficiencies as high as 95%, Chopstick TM provides exceptional illumination in spaces that would typically require multiple light fixtures. Available in energy-efficient T5 and T5HO lamping options, Chopstick delivers a luminous environment with excellent energy performance and minimalist design. 10

Private office Built-in simplicity. Wireless photosensor Adaptive Wireless switches Airwave advantage In response to rising construction costs and strict energy mandates, Ledalite designed the Airwave photosensor to be powered by the most abundant and free energy source available ambient light. Harvesting its power from miniature photovoltaic cells on the face of the device, the photosensor regularly monitors ambient light levels and transmits wireless signals to the Airwave transceiver, which in turn gradually dims luminaires. The location and calibration of typical photosensor controls is very critical, as moving and re-commissioning devices can be costly and time consuming. When layout changes occur, self-powered Airwave wireless photosensors can be easily repositioned anywhere in the space, eliminating any extra hardwiring, and reducing installation costs. Additional possibilities Adding an additional switch or handheld remote control can enhance lighting dynamics even further. To ensure optimal energy performance, users can dim light levels, but cannot override photosensor set points. For greater energy savings, an occupancy sensor can be attached or linked to the transceiver to automatically dim and then turn lights off when the office is vacant. Featured luminaires Slim PureFX luminaires with MesoOptics technology create a luminous office environment while producing greater energy savings compared to typical parabolics. The minimalist scale of the PureFX 6"x4' luminaires in this space create a modern look, and provide uniform glare-free illumination. The discreet luminaire design also opens up ceiling space for the optimal placement of other building systems such as HVAC and fire-protection components. Occupancy sensors Handheld remote 12

Open office Smart lighting, brilliant results. Personal dimming control Demand Response Reconfigurability Energy savings Daylight harvesting Airwave advantage A truly sustainable future can only be accomplished if builders, designers and architects make a commitment to both flexibility and functionality. Airwave enables this future by allowing a space to adapt to the changing dynamics of its occupants and usage. Further, Airwave addresses emerging requirements of Demand Response load shedding programs, as well as other potential future energy and sustainability initiatives. Every Airwave transceiver contains cutting-edge technology to comply with load shedding signals for Demand Response. Each device is equipped with four pre-programmed settings designed to adjust lighting levels when Demand Response commands are initiated in a building. Whether these events are triggered by the utility itself, or as part of a facilities energy saving program, Airwave wirelessly reacts by slowly dimming the lighting output; thereby dramatically reducing energy costs. * Response integrated daylight harvesting sensors are FREE with all suspended products equipped with Ledalite factory standard 0-10 V dimming ballasts. Additional possibilities In the near future, reacting to Demand Response commands for instantaneous load shedding will be a requirement for any effective energy management system. However, taking proactive steps to automatically control energy use today is a sure and practical investment that will begin paying off immediately. Ledalite s discreet fixture-integrated Response Daylight sensor creates savings by dimming lighting when there is sufficient daylight. With no requirement for additional wiring, and no commissioning necessary, Response Daylight sensors are a simple and cost-effective strategy for reducing energy consumption without adversely affecting people in the space. Featured luminaires Utilizing MesoOptics technology, the Voice TM family of luminaires offers a modern unified aesthetic in suspended, surface mounted and recessed options. Crisp lines, modern highlights and unique luminous elements are enveloped in a low-profile design that is refined and efficient. LEED points 14

Open office Custom control for the common good. Zoning Reconfiguration Kinetic switch Flexibillity Airwave advantage Controlling light systems in an open office can be a challenge. Large areas of coverage often conflict with the specific lighting needs of employees semi-private areas. Simply installing a few Airwave transceivers provides the ability to easily create multiple lighting sub-zones for these smaller work environments.this enables occupants to actively dim lighting to more preferred levels, thereby enhancing their own productivity and comfort throughout the workday. Further energy savings can be realized by taking advantage of Airwave s wireless, solar powered daylight harvesting photosensors, combined with localized occupancy sensors to automatically dim and turn off lights in vacant areas. The wireless flexibility of Airwave anticipates change and avoids costly rewiring. Additional possibilities Open plans that use systems-furniture or demountable partitions are perfectly suited for Airwave wireless controls.these moveable walls often do not extend from the floor to the ceiling, or incorporate the building electrical wiring infrastructure. With Airwave, lighting zones can be easily reprogrammed. Kinetic switches and wireless devices can be simply repositioned without the costs and complexities of rewiring lighting and control circuits through ceiling plenums or to electrical rooms. Featured luminaires Through the use of elliptical MesoOptics technology, Pique TM provides highly efficient illumination that is both uniform and glare-free. Carefully controlled distribution allows for the design of spaces with increased vertical brightness, delivering a quality of spatial and architectural volume. Pique s extensive range of sizes, lamping options and mounting types meets the needs of almost any space. Available in a broad array of recessed and surface mount options, Pique offers multiple solutions for today s retrofit and new construction challenges. Daylight harvesting Solar power 16

Airwave best practices Needs-based lighting zones The intelligent Airwave transceiver can easily transform large areas of uncontrolled lighting into smaller, discreet zones with improved user accessibility and control. A strategic design principle is to use one Airwave transceiver and multiple switches and photosensors to control all luminaires within each lighting zone. This optimizes the lighting system for energy and cost savings. Design planning Wireless switches and photosensors require no hardwire connections, allowing for easy placement and repositioning anywhere in a space. Transceivers can receive wireless signals from 30 devices located up to 100 feet away, and through up to five walls. Just a single Airwave transceiver can receive signals from multiple switches and occupancy sensors to deliver maximum functionality and outstanding flexibility. Occupancy sensing An Airwave transceiver can also operate as a low voltage power pack for a 24 V wired occupancy sensor. This minimizes time, labor, equipment and copper wiring infrastructure. Combining Airwave with occupancy sensors gives the lighting system the ability to respond to both personal preferences and changing occupancy conditions throughout the day, providing maximum energy savings and reduced operational costs. Wood Glass Brick MDF & Chipboard Concrete 1 wall 3 walls 5 walls Photosensor placement The optimal placement for an Airwave photosensor is 6-10' from a window over representative work areas. One of the benefits of wireless flexibility is that when the layout of the work area changes, the Airwave photosensor can easily be relocated. Metal & Aluminium No signal received Distance (ft) 19

Kinetic energy devices Wireless. Batteryless. Limitless. Kinetic components Single paddle Dual paddle Handheld remote The Airwave switch is a self-powered and battery-free device that transmits wireless signals to transceivers to dim luminaires and turn them on or off. Each press and release of the switch generates enough kinetic energy to wirelessly transmit a command to a transceiver. A unique sequence of clicks can be used to link Airwave switches to transceivers wirelessly. Airwave switches produce far fewer high-frequency fields than conventional wired light switches, making it a very safe technology. Each switch has its own unique identification address, ensuring that the settings of the Airwave switch linked to the transceiver do not unintentionally change by proximity to other wireless devices. Multiple Airwave switches and photosensors can be installed next to other wireless devices. 28 26 FAQs

How the technology works If there are no batteries and no wires, how does this technology work? The devices get their power from organic energy sources which naturally occur in the space. For example, just the simple motion of pushing the Airwave switch creates enough kinetic energy to send wireless signals to luminaires allowing on/off control and full range dimming. Similarly, the solar powered Airwave photosensor gets its operating energy from internal photovoltaic cells which are charged by exposure to light. What wireless technology does Airwave use? The core technology is based on miniaturized energy harvesting modules with ultralow-power radio transmission (315 MHz). The developer of this award-winning and patented battery-free wireless technology is EnOcean, a spin-off of Siemens Corporation. The underlying technology is currently operational in over 10,000 commercial and residential spaces across North America, Europe and Asia. Visit to learn more. Installation How do I install the Airwave transceiver? The Airwave transceiver is wired directly to a junction box which controls a lighting zone that may contain a single luminaire or a group of luminaires. The transceiver is then an intelligence center that controls the lighting zone based on the information or commands that it receives from connected devices, such as an Airwave switch or photosensor. See the Airwave Product Manual for more details. How do you link an Airwave switch to an Airwave transceiver? There are two primary methods of linking a switch to a transceiver: (1) manually and (2) remotely. Remote linking is available so that reconfiguration and addition of devices can occur easily after the initial commissioning. Please view the Airwave Product Manual for complete linking instructions. What is the maximum electrical load that can be controlled by an Airwave transceiver? Airwave transceivers are certified to control up to a 20 A circuit at 120/277 V and 15 A at 347 V. Switching & dimming Can one Airwave switch control multiple Airwave transceivers? Yes, any one switch can control as many transceivers that are within range and linked to that switch. Can Airwave switches be used in a standard metal electrical switch box? Yes. The Airwave switch can be mounted in a standard plastic or metal wall box. The Airwave switch recesses into the switch box allowing a standard face plate to remain flush with wall surface. How often do Airwave switches and sensors require maintenance? There is never a need to service these devices or replace batteries. The Airwave switches are self-powered with kinetic energy and the photosensors solar powered. Can Airwave switches be surface mounted? Yes. Airwave switches can be surface mounted using an optional accessory backplate. Airwave back plates are available in one, two and three gang configurations. Can I use a metal face plate with an Airwave switch? It is not recommended to use a metal face plate with an Airwave switch as it will decrease the transmission range. Can a wireless Airwave switch be used with a conventional wired switch? Yes. However, this arrangement will not function as three-way switching; the conventional hardwired switch will function as an in-series interrupt to the wireless transceiver. Photosensor technology How does the Airwave photosensor work? The Airwave solar powered, wireless and battery-free photosensor detects ambient light levels and transmits wireless signals to the transceiver which then automatically and gradually adjusts luminaire output to save energy. What is the minimum light level required for the Airwave photosensor to remain charged? The photosensor will charge at very low light levels. The photosensor has been designed so that when there is enough light to warrant daylight harvesting, there is enough solar energy to power the Airwave photosensor. 27

Does the Airwave photosensor need to be fully charged before it will work? No. The photosensor will begin transmitting information when it begins charging, which is only minutes after being exposed to light. How often does the Airwave photosensor transmit the light level to the Airwave transceiver? The photosensor monitors light levels every 10 seconds and transmits if there has been a change. If there has not been a change, the photosensor will automatically transmit the light level approximately every 100 seconds. What is the measurable illuminance range of the Airwave photosensor? The approximate range is 0-50 footcandles (510 lux) at the ceiling surface. Range planning What is the range of the Airwave wireless transmission? On average, transmission range indoors is approximately 100 feet (30 meters). The range of the transmission depends on the environment around the transceiver. Range planning is very important when applying this technology. Placing transceivers behind metal (i.e., ductwork, metal doors) can limit or block signals from being received. What happens if the transmission distance is greater than 100 feet? One option is to move the switch closer to the transceiver. The other option is to set a transceiver that is within range into a Repeater mode to propagate the wireless signal. Setting a transceiver to Repeater mode does not reduce any of its original functionality. Can Airwave transmit through walls? Yes. Airwave can transmit through brick, concrete, wood, glass, steel studs, acoustic tile ceilings, plaster, and drywall. What spacing should be maintained between Airwave devices and other wireless transmitters? Airwave switches and photosensors can be installed next to other wireless transmitters. However, it is suggested that Airwave transceivers be positioned at least 20 inches (50 centimeters) away from other transmitters such as wireless routers, computers, audio and video equipment. What do I do if there is a metal door or metal wall obstructing the wireless transmission? One option is to move the switch away from the metal obstruction and/or closer to the transceiver. The other option is to set a transceiver that is within range into a Repeater mode to propagate the wireless signal further and/or around the metal obstruction. Safety, security and regulatory compliance Is Airwave safe? Yes. Airwave switches produce 100 times less intensive high-frequency fields than traditional light switches, making Airwave a very safe technology. Airwave switches and photosensors can be used in a wide array of applications including transmission-sensitive areas. How secure is Airwave? Each Airwave photosensor, switch, and transceiver has its own unique 32-bit identification address. Settings cannot be manipulated or unintentionally changed by other wireless devices. Does Airwave wireless technology interfere with other wireless frequencies? No. Airwave operates at 315 Mhz which is a unique radio frequency that does not interfere with other common wireless devices such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi networks, and AM/ FM radio. Does Airwave meet regulatory standards? Yes. Airwave is FCC and UL approved for use in the United States, and IC and CSA approved for use in Canada. 28
