If you are experiencing any difficulties with this step, call MovieBeam Customer Care at l l500. Connecting the Phone Cord The MovieBeam player requires a land-based phone line connection to allow communication of billing information. The MovieBeam player will call out periodically in the middle of the night, just a few times each month. The calls are toll-free, so there is no cost to you. MovieBeam will not interfere with your phone service. MovieBeam automatically disconnects from calling in if a phone is picked up during the process. Connect one end of the phone cord to the phone jack on the back of the MovieBeam player and the other end to a phone wall jack. 31 IMPORTANT: Connect the HDMI cable and turn on your TV or HDMI switching AV receiver BEFORE connecting power to your MovieBeam player. MovieBeam automatically sets resolution based upon the active cables connected during startup. If you plug your HDMI cable in AFTER you connect power, leave the HDMI cable plugged in and your TV or HDMI switching AV receiver on, then disconnect and reconnect the MovieBeam power cord to restart MovieBeam in HD. High Definition HDTV In order to watch our high-definition movies, your TV must be HDTV-ready with an available HDMI input and the MovieBeam player must be connected using an HDMI cable. Because there are so many types of TVs, the best way to confirm that your TV is HDTV-ready is to consult your television s user guide or the manufacturer s website. The HDMI cable is included in the optional Home Theater Kit available from or by calling l l500. HDMI cables can also be found at most major consumer electronics retailers. Video Upconversion When connected to an HDTV via HDMI, MovieBeam automatically upconverts standard-definition movies to 720p. You can override this upconversion by entering the Advanced Settings and Information section under the Main Menu. You cannot enable upconversion without having the HDMI output connected to an HDTV. To disable upconversion: l. On the Main Menu, choose Settings 2. Select Advanced Settings & Info The Output Switch When MovieBeam is in HD mode, the default output of MovieBeam is 720p. This switch is not used. 3. Select Video Upconversion 4. Select Do Not Upconvert SD Video 31

HDMI Connection The HDMI cable carries the high-quality digital video and audio signals to your TV, therefore no other cables are necessary. If you are using an audio/video receiver for surround sound, please refer to the Enhanced Audio section of the User Guide beginnning on page 28. If you choose to connect your MovieBeam player to a audio/video receiver surround sound system, 2-channel sound will continue to play through your TV when connected through HDMI. 33 HD Troubleshooting After you have completed connecting your HDMI cable, the Antenna Set-Up, Telephone Set-Up and reviewed the Welcome Video (all covered in the next chapter), you should experience MovieBeam with an expanded selection of movies in HD, a wider format HD menu and sharper picture delivered in 720p. If you re not sure if MovieBeam is connected correctly for a high-definition experience, please check the following: l. Select Find Movies from the Main Menu. You should see HD Showcase. If not, disconnect the power cord from the back of the MovieBeam player, wait l0 seconds and reconnect the power cord. This will reset the MovieBeam player to recognize the HDMI connection. 2. Repeat Step l above to confirm an HD signal. 3. If you are still experiencing difficulty, check that you are using an HDMI cable and are con necting it to an HDTV with an HDMI input. Refer to your TV manufacturer's user guide for compliance. MovieBeam does not output an HD signal that does not conform to these specifications. 33

4 Finishing Set-Up This section includes connecting the power supply, antenna adjustment, remote control and navigation functions, and creating your account. 34

NOTE: For HDTV, connect your HDMI cable prior to connecting power. Connecting Power This step uses two of the cords shown in the What s in the Package portion of Section l. Plug one end of the power cord into the MovieBeam player. Connect the other end of the power cord into the rectangular power unit. Plug the 3-pronged connector of the rectangular power unit into a wall outlet. Do not connect your MovieBeam player to a power outlet controlled by a wall switch because your player always needs to be powered. To continue receiving movies, keep the player plugged in at all times. REMEMBER: The MovieBeam player requires constant power to update movies. Do not unplug the MovieBeam player. MovieBeam Player IN OUT NOTE: Your MovieBeam player must always be plugged in so that it can receive movies. Be sure it is not plugged in to an outlet that can be turned off by a light switch. 35

Completing Set-Up Congratulations! You ve connected your MovieBeam player to your home entertainment system. Now, with a few more easy steps, you ll be on your way to enjoying movies instantly. The first time you plug in your MovieBeam player the screen will be dark for a few seconds, then an icon will appear. After you select Begin Set-Up, a Welcome screen will display with further instructions. The Welcome screen may display for as long as 5 minutes. Your MovieBeam player is always powered on so that it can receive movies. When it is in Standby mode and not sending video to your TV, the light on the left of the player will be yellow. You will know that the player is sending MovieBeam video to your TV if the light is green. NOTE: Keep the phone line plugged in to keep your account information current. If you cannot keep the phone line plugged in at all times, connect it at least once every two weeks or you will be prompted to call in before renting additional movies. If you are not getting images on your TV, find either the Input or TV/VCR button on your TV or your TV's remote control. Press it until you see the MovieBeam screen. An animated sequence will guide you through the rest of the set-up. 37 Phone Set-Up Part of the set-up process involves the player checking the phone line and calling in to activate. If the call is sucessful, it will begin playing the MovieBeam Welcome Video. This call can take up to 5 minutes. When the call is complete, continue to the antenna adjustment step. If the call is unsuccessful, you will be prompted to select dialing parameters. Use the Remote Control or the Navigation Star buttons on the front of the MovieBeam player to respond to the prompts. If the phone call is still unsuccessful, contact MovieBeam Customer Care at l l500 for further assistance. When the MovieBeam player has successfully called in, you will be instructed on how to position the antenna. 37

Antenna Set-Up It is very important that the MovieBeam player gets a good signal to ensure you are able to receive movies. This step may take a few minutes and may involve positioning the antenna in multiple locations in order to maximize the signal. Following the on-screen prompts, place the antenna high on a bookshelf and/or near a window in the location you would like to keep it in. Step back from your TV and player and observe the antenna signal bar on your screen. NOTE: Once your antenna is properly set up, it is important to keep it in the same location so that you continue to receive movies. If the bar is green, you are getting a sufficient signal and will be prompted to go to the next step. If the bar is green but below 80, attempt to reposition the antenna to get a stronger signal. If the bar is not green, adjust the antenna's position and step back. Repeat until you see a steady green signal. If the antenna is moved, disrupting your signal, the red light on the MovieBeam player will illuminate and you will receive a warning on the Main Menu. To get a sufficient signal, readjust your antenna immediately following the instructions above. To re-tune the antenna after initial set-up: l. Choose Settings & Info on the Main Menu. 2. Choose Antenna Set-Up. 3. The player will check the antenna settings and a screen will indicate if movies are being received. The bar in the center of the Antenna Set-Up screen changes from orange to green as the antenna detects a movie signal. An orange bar, or short green bar, indicates weak or no signal, which means that no movies are being received. A long green bar indicates a strong signal. 4. Find a position for the antenna where the bar is as long as possible and stays green. When you do, the screen will indicate Status: Receiving Movies. 38

If you are having trouble getting reception, try these hints: To improve reception, rotate and move the antenna, then step away from it until you get the highest signal strength possible. When the antenna bar turns green, select CONTINUE. If you are not receiving a strong enough signal, MovieBeam may need to try to get a signal from an alternate channel. If this is the case, you will be prompted to do this from the Antenna Set-Up screen. If you continue to have difficulty receiving a strong signal, select Antenna Hints on the Antenna Set-Up screen or contact MovieBeam Customer Care at l l500. Activating MovieBeam Service After you set up your antenna for the first time, the MovieBeam player will prompt you to activate your service by calling Customer Care at l l500. The Customer Care Representative will give you an activation code. Press the MENU button and then enter the code using the remote control. Once you have correctly entered the code, the Main Menu will display. After the Antenna Set-Up and activation via Customer Care are complete, the MovieBeam player will continuously receive new movies through the antenna as long as the unit stays plugged in and the antenna stays tuned. Congratulations! You're ready to rent your first movie! If You Forget Your Passcode If you forget your passcode, you can either clear it by accessing the My Account section of or by contacting Customer Care at l l500. A Customer Care agent will remove the forgotten passcode allowing entry of a new passcode. Your MovieBeam player will need to call back to reset. 55 System Info Shows details about your MovieBeam player, including the current software version and the date the software was last updated. Information on this screen might be requested by MovieBeam Customer Care in the unlikely event that you have problems with your player. Advanced Phone Settings Advanced Phone Settings are for phone systems which are more complicated than most home phones. Setting the advanced options incorrectly may cause your callbacks to fail. Do not adjust these settings unless you are experiencing difficulty with the Phone Set-Up or during MovieBeam call-ins. The Advanced Phone Settings option can be selected from the Advanced Settings & Info menu. If you are still experiencing difficulty, contact Customer Care at l l500. Tone/Pulse In the popup window, choose Tone or Pulse and press SELECT. Most home phones are tone, rather than pulse, meaning you hear a tone when you dial. Default: Tone Dialing Prefix Most phones will not require this setting, however, if your phone requires a dialing prefix to call out, for example, if you have to dial 9 before the phone number, select Yes on this screen. You will be asked to select the proper dialing prefix. Default: No dialing prefix Disable Call Waiting By selecting Yes, you will disable call waiting only while the player is calling in. You will need to enter a call waiting disable code available from your phone company. Incoming callers will hear a busy signal. 55

If you have call waiting on your phone, enable this feature, so that MovieBeam player callbacks are not interrupted by incoming calls. Default: No Ignore Dial Tone Choosing Yes configures the player to ignore the dial tone before the player calls in. This option may be required for compatibility with some VOIP (voice over IP) systems. Default: No Line In Use Check Choosing Yes causes the modem to check the line status before each call to prevent the player from calling in if your telephone line is in use. Set to No for VOIP (voice over IP) systems. Default: Yes Line Release Choosing Yes will cause the player to interrupt its own call and hang up if someone picks up a telephone line while the player is calling in. Default: Yes Make Test Call Choosing this selection causes the player to make a test call. This may take a few minutes. If the call is unsuccessful, try resetting all the phone settings to the default using the Reset to Default selection. Reset to Default Choosing this selection resets all advanced phone settings to the defaults. 56
