Wireless Spectrum Update YOU ARE HERE
Wireless Spectrum Update ITEM CLASS OF TRANSMITTER PERMITTED OPERATING FREQUENCY BAND (MHz) MAXIMUM EIRP 22A Wireless audio transmitters mw Note1 The emission must be frequency modulated and have a maximum bandwidth of 330kHz. Note 2 Transmission in a TV channel must not originate in the licence area of a TV broadcasting station (including a repeater or translator station) operating in the same channel Note 4 When in an unused TV channel, but in the licence area of a TV broadcasting station (including a repeater or translator station) operating in an adjacent TV channel, the channel centre frequency of the wireless audio transmitter must be at least 400 khz above the upper edge of the adjacent TV channel, or 400 khz below the lower edge of the adjacent TV channel
Wireless Spectrum Update Why? Mobile broadband growth 50% was video in % will be video in Exa byte = 1 million terabytes T/Byte = 10 18
We are not alone. Transition to digital is global Digital dividend ranging from 56MHz to as much as 108MHz USA and UK experience most likely to inform the regulatory environment here in Australia
Spectrum has real value The US spectrum auction resulted in $19 billion in income. In Australia forecasts vary but range up to $4 billion Whatever the final figure is we need to understand that income is irresistible and will add to Gov. revenues from 2013 onwards As of 8/2/08

Wireless Spectrum Update This is the make-up of the Digital Dividend Guard Bands Mid Band Gap
Life post analogue shutdown Sounds pretty good for wireless microphone users. Plenty of free spectrum to play in. But maybe not Radio spectrum is a valuable resource, and there are companies who will pay BIG dollars for it.
White Space Devices New breed of portable wireless network devices designed to utilise unused TV channels within the UHF TV band (white spaces). Devices need to automatically detect and avoid active TV transmitters (spectrum sensing). FCC Currently testing prototypes. First devices failed to adequately detect other transmitters.
White Spaces Coalition includes: Microsoft, Google, Dell, HP, Intel, Philips, Samsung etc. In other words BIG MONEY BIG GLOBAL PLAYERS

Some key questions: How do we meet current and future wireless audio needs with 40% less capacity? What products will or won t work (or be legal)? Who pays for the transition? When will pre-dividend products (those operating in the MHz range) be withdrawn from sale in Australia? What will the change cost me or my organisation? Will the transition be managed?
How do we meet current and future wireless audio needs with 40% less capacity? - improved product efficiency - use of mid band gap? - changes to LIPD licence conditions?
What products will or won t work (or be legal)? Come 1 January 2015 any product transmitting in the frequencies above 694MHz is likely to be illegal (and therefore not to be used) About 150,000 devices nationally with a replacement value of more than $260 million Product operating below 694MHz may also be affected depending on where TV stations are located following the restack. The ability to use these products is a practical one not a legal one.
Restack planning (ACMA) Restack planning is progressing slowly, it s a major task. Allocation information is updated periodically on the Restack Planning Advisory Group (RPAG) section of the ACMA web site here;
Restack planning (ACMA) Block allocations are shown for most TV coverage areas. Some locations will have very little open (white) space to support wireless microphones. Chart must be read with attention to all notes and consideration to local terrain.
Who pays for the transition? At the moment you do. Users are expected to change their product as a result of the changes in the law. -AWAG is working to influence Gov. to assist in the costs of transition by undertaking a buy back scheme
When will products operating in the MHz range be withdrawn from sale in Australia? We don t know Minister Conroy seems reluctant to set dates by which importation or sale must cease Most major brands are transitioning their product ranges or have already
What will the change cost me or my organisation? Depending on the outcome of negotiations with Gov., you or your organisation will be required cover all replacement costs, or a portion of them depending on what compensation plan might be negotiated - depreciation models - replacement cost model
Will the transition be managed? That is AWAG s intention Gov. has a detailed transition plan and timetable commencing July 2012 concluding in June 2015 appointment of a transition manager training of retailers and resellers education and communication program testing for mid band gap products branding reverse logistics compensation packages
- political - Influence the Minister - sectoral - letter writing - industry agitation - Dialogue with Gov. - Parliamentary forums (QON, opposition and third parties etc.) - technical - mid band gap testing - public - PR & media - technical forums - technical/legal (LIPD) - spectrum auction contestants

Shure Axient The Axient Spectrum Manager offers precision wideband scanning and onboard compatible frequency calculation, as well as backup frequency monitoring, ranking and deployment all on demand. The Spectrum Manager not only captures a detailed scan of your venue and displays it graphically, it can also listen in on a particular signal or store the data from a site survey to be used later.
Shure Axient In the event of signal degradation, Axient Interference Avoidance technology enables engineers to move to a clean, compatible frequency - manually or automatically. Respond to an alert by either manually selecting a new frequency, or, when used in conjunction with the Axient Spectrum Manager, back-up frequencies are constantly monitored, ranked, and deployed automatically the instant interference is detected.
Shure Axient Unprecedented in wireless microphone technology, Frequency Diversity enables audio transmission from a single source on two independent radio frequencies. With Frequency Diversity mode enabled, the Axient Receiver continuously analyses signal quality and uses both frequencies to provide optimized audio on a single channel. With two frequencies transmitting the same audio, the presence of direct RF interference on one frequency causes zero interruption. Instead of producing annoying dropouts or audio artifacts, the receiver seamlessly and automatically switches to the other frequency, delivering clean, uninterrupted audio.
Shure Axient ShowLink Remote Control enables real-time remote adjustments of all transmitter parameters using a wireless network connection between linked Axient transmitters and receivers. Whether performers are on stage in the middle of a show, or off stage waiting for their cue, ShowLink lets engineers make crucial changes to their transmitter settings - without ever leaving the control booth. Remote frequency changes, gain adjustments, RF mute enabling, RF output power adjustments, and more are all possible over the ShowLink network.
Shure Axient Advanced Power Management provides a comprehensive suite of smart, high performance batteries and chargers, with detailed visibility of critical battery parameters. - View remaining battery power accurate to within 15 minutes on transmitters, receivers and WWB6 - Monitor percentage of capacity and time to full charge, visible on the Rack Mount Charging Station and WWB6 - Track battery health using charging cycle count and percentage of original capacity
