Introduction What is Time Delay Estimation? Time delay estimation (TDE) refers to finding the timedifferences-of-arrival between signals received at an array of sensors. A general signal model is: where is the received signal, is the signal-of-interest with and being the gain/attenuation and propagation delay, and is the noise, at the th sensor. There are sensors, and at each sensor, observations are collected. H. C. So Page 3
Given, the task of TDE is to estimate Although there are delays, there are only nonredundant parameters because of. A nonredundant set can be,. As an example, we have delay estimates, and for, and the accuracy of and can be improved by making use of their relationship with [1]. Similar terminologies include time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) estimation, time-of-arrival (TOA) estimation, and time-of-flight (TOF) estimation. H. C. So Page 4
Types of Time Delay Estimation Considering the fundamental issue where classified as active and passive systems [2]., TDE can be Active TDE means that is known and the problem can be formulated as follows. Given The task is to find the TDOA using and. In passive TDE, is unknown, and the signal model is: That is, we aim to find using and. H. C. So Page 5
Applications Many science and engineering problems are related to TDE: Radar Ranging Suppose a radar system transmits an electromagnetic pulse, which is then reflected by an object at a range of, causing an echo to be received. The received is scaled, delayed and noisy version of : It is clear that the time delay time. is round trip propagation H. C. So Page 6
1 transmitted pulse time received pulse Via estimating, t time can be obtained using the relationship: where is the signal propagation speed. H. C. So Page 7
Wireless Location If we know one-way propagation time of the signal traveling between mobile station and base station (BS), then the target position can be obtained using three BSs. H. C. So Page 8
Sonar Direction Finding For a far-field target, the delay direction-of-arrival: can be converted to H. C. So Page 9
Nerve Conduction Velocity Estimation The speed is given by the TDOA between the electrode signals divided by. H. C. So Page 10

C. So Page 11
Algorithms for Random Signals We consider the following model: The task is to find using and. For simplicity, it is assumed that, and are zeromean white processes with variances and, which are independent of each other. Starting with the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion, the cost function to be minimized is: H. C. So Page 12
The MMSE estimates of and can be easily computed as: implying that unbiased delay estimation is achieved. Expanding and noting that, it is seen that can also be obtained from: where corresponds to the cross correlation method. H. C. So Page 13
Note that the general form is known as generalized cross correlator [3]-[4] where the prefilters are employed to enhance the frequency bands where the signal is strong and to attenuate the bands where the noise is excessive. H. C. So Page 14
To produce from, we can apply the interpolation formula [5]: where Note that should be chosen sufficiently large to reduce the delay modeling error [6]. To avoid varying in the maximization of, an alternative is to employ,, which is easily computed. H. C. So Page 15
Using the interpolation formula, we straightforwardly obtain: In practice, is replaced by its estimate,, which is computed using finite samples of and. The TDOA estimate can be obtained using sinc interpolation [6] of : However, is biased for finite. H. C. So Page 16
To circumvent the delay bias, we use a least squares (LS) fit to process via minimizing: where is the optimization variable for. As is easily solved with a closed form expression, we can remove in, resulting in the TDOA estimate: H. C. So Page 17
As it is not practical to generate a perfect MMSE criterion, a second methodology is to model using a noncausal FIR filter [5]-[7]: in the Employing the interpolation formula and white property of, and, the MMSE solution is: which aligns with the estimate using infinite filter length is required. H. C. So Page 18 where an
Sample correlations are used in practice, which results in: Employing sinc interpolation, we have [6]: Employing LS regression, we have [7]: H. C. So Page 19
Consider unconstrained optimization problem via minimizing a differentiable cost function, that is: Based on Taylor s series expansion of, the mean and mean square error (MSE) of the estimate are derived as [8]: H. C. So Page 20
Applying the formulae, we have shown [7]: and where. Note that H. C. So Page 21
Hence for sufficiently large, we have: which is equal to Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) [2],[4] for Gaussian data. When is chosen large enough, it can also be shown that: That is, all of them are asymptotically optimum. H. C. So Page 22
Comparison between and [7] H. C. So Page 23
Adaptive realizations of these batch mode techniques can be designed accordingly. For example, based on the MMSE solution of, the corresponding least mean squares (LMS) algorithm can be [9]: H. C. So Page 24
where Its extension to handle multipath propagation can be found in [10]-[12]. Other LMS algorithms based on FIR filtering modeling or cross correlation include [13]-[15]. Apart from the LMS approach which minimizes the instantaneous squared error, we can use recursive least squares (RLS), which minimizes a weighted sum of [16]: H. C. So Page 25
Algorithms for Deterministic Signals Considering sinusoidal signal, the data model is: where and now and are zero-mean white complex processes with. The discrete-time Fourier transform (DTFT) can be utilized to estimate as follows [17]. H. C. So Page 26
At : where For sufficiently high SNR, we obtain: H. C. So Page 27
In a similar manner: where Hence the time delay estimate can be computed as: The variance of is derived as: H. C. So Page 28
Note that the first term is computed using the knowledge of while the second term is the CRLB. This approach has been extended to the case when is unknown via locating the peaks of and and also for real-valued sinusoid [17]-[18]. The transform based methodology can also be applied for other deterministic signals. For example, the fractional Fourer transform [19]-[20] has been studied for TDE using chirp signal: where denotes the frequency rate. H. C. So Page 29
Performance of DTFT approach versus SNR [17] H. C. So Page 30
Performance of modified DTFT approach versus SNR [18] H. C. So Page 31
For nonstationary scenarios, may vary with time and adaptive techniques are needed for its tracking. When a specific sampling frequency is employed, an adaptive FIR filter can be applied to model the TDOA for a sinusoid : where is the frequency of the analog counterpart [21] or where the FIR filter coefficients are samples of a cosine function [22].
