2 OVERVIEW The DX1 laser diode (LD) and TEC controller from Eblana Photonics is an extremely precise, stable and convenient way to supply bias current and manage the temperature behaviour of the Eblana Photonics Discrete Mode (DM) and Narrow Linewidth (NLW) laser diodes. The module is capable of both CW and modulated operation with low noise, allowing the laser diode to achieve excellent stability and reliability. Both the bias and the laser temperature can be tuned accurately using an externally applied voltage. Alternatively, the DX1 can be shipped with a custom steady-state specification to deliver a precisely set bias current at a fixed temperature, depending on customer requirements. This manual provides all the information necessary for the safe operation of the DX1 module, along with a complete list of technical specifications and available accessories. BEFORE CONNECTING The DX1 features a 4-pin connector (plug included) for providing power and setting the bias and TEC voltages. The pin connections are detailed in the figure below. 3 CONNECTING THE DX1 The DX1 module requires a voltage (V CC ) of +5 V. This is connected to PIN 3 via the supplied 4-pin plug, through the red wire (Please see Fig. 2). The corresponding ground connection is made through PIN 2 via the black ground wire. CONTROLLING THE TEC If no voltage is supplied to the TEC connector, a default temperature value of 25 C is set (unless an alternative temperature is requested). The corresponding TEC voltage for 25 C operation is 1.5 V. In order to override this value and tune the temperature of the laser diode, an external voltage must be connected to PIN 1 via the green wire on the supplied 4-pin plug. The range of operation for the TEC voltage supply is.1 V (15 C) to 3 V (35 C). SETTING THE BIAS CURRENT If the bias pin is not connected, the bias current is set to 8 ma by default for DM lasers and 2 ma for NLW lasers (or set to an alternative value according to customer requirements). In order to set a specific bias current, or to modulate the bias current, an external voltage must be connected to PIN 4 via the blue wire on the supplied 4-pin plug. Connecting an external voltage will override the default value. The range of bias current values that can be supplied is directly proportional to the voltage supplied such that a range of 2.5 V corresponds to 25 ma. The maximum bias current for the Eblana Photonics DM laser diodes is 12 ma, thus the bias voltage should not exceed 1.2 V. The maximum bias current for NLW laser diodes is 25 ma, thus the bias voltage should not exceed 2.5 V. The bias current modulation bandwidth for DM lasers is 8 khz. The bias transfer function is calculated simply as follows: LD bias current (ma) = applied bias voltage (V) x 1.
