1 Sasquatch Kick Machine Users Manual 1

2 Intro Thank you for installing Sasquatch Kick Machine. We hope it blows your mind. If it doesn t blow your mind, it should at least blow your speakers. Don t blame us if your neighbors complain. The Sections Sasquatch Kick Machine is divided into three sections: Click, Oomph and Direct. These three processes run in parallel and are summed together at the output stage. You can control the volume of each of these sections from any screen. By clicking the Edit button for each section, you can view more advanced controls for that section. Main Screen The main screen shows input and output peak meters, as well as a trim fader, which adjusts the master output volume. From this screen, you can control the output volume of each section (Click, Oomph and Direct). Each section shows a peak meter to give you a quick reference of your sections output levels. Click Controls the amount of beater click added. Oomph Controls the amount of low frequency content. Direct Controls the amount of dry signal. Edit Access advanced controls for section. Green Button Click this to enable/disable section. Reset Resets all the controls to the default settings. This includes any advanced controls that you may have adjusted. About Shows some very, very, very exciting information about Sasquatch Kick Machine. 2

3 Click Screen The Click section gives you control over the sound of your beater click. Shape This X/Y pad adjusts the shape of the beater click sound. The best thing to do is just to try different positions to see what best compliments your kick drum. To the left creates more sustained clicks, to the right creates shorter sharper clicks. Tone This section is provides two separate filters to shape the character of your kick. Freq The frequency of each filter. Focus Controls how much resonance is placed on each filter which is the boost just before the cutoff frequency. 3

4 Oomph This section controls the low frequency tone generators to give your kick drum some added beef. Tone This section controls the main tone of the Oomph. This is like the home base for the low end. Freq This controls the frequency of the sine wave generator. Target Note This drop down menu lets you pick a note for the tone generator, rather than using the freq knob to pick a frequency. This is particularly helpful if have a song in the key of G, you can pick your tone to play a G to better blend with the song. Sustain This controls how long the sine wave will sustain in milliseconds after it is triggered. Decay This controls how fast the sine wave will decay after the sustain period has ended. series of notes. Snap to Note When this is enabled, the tone generator will automatically snap to the frequency of the nearest note in the chromatic scale. This is useful if using automation to control the frequency to play a Dive When enabled, this section causes the note to dive (or rise) dynamically instead of playing a single sustained frequency. Freq This controls the starting frequency of the pitch dive (with the ending frequency being the home base frequency). Note that the start frequency changes depending on the strength of the incoming kick drum. The louder the volume of the incoming kick drum, the closer the starting frequency will be to the value in this box. This provides a more natural dynamic response to the kick drum. Speed This controls the speed of the pitch dive. The higher this value is, the faster the pitch will reach the home base frequency. 4

5 Harmonics When enabled, the tone generator will create additional harmonics to the original tone. Level Controls the level of the harmonics. Each harmonic will be attenuated by this value. For example, if you have 3 harmonics with a level set to 8, the first harmonic will be 8 db lower than the fundamental, the second harmonic will be 16 db lower than the fundamental, and the third will be 24 db lower than the fundamental. Freq This controls the relationship in octaves between the harmonics and the fundamental. When set to 1, the first harmonic will be one octave above the fundamental, the second harmonic will be 2 octaves above the fundamental, etc. As you change this value, the harmonics become harmonically unrelated to the original tone. Num This determines the number of harmonics that will be present. 5

6 Direct This section controls any processing performed directly on the incoming signal. Tone This section provides an equalizer for the direct signal. HPF A high pass filter frequency for getting rid of some of the low end rumble. Reso This controls the resonance of the high pass filter. This is the same filter that Bark of Dog was created from. Increase the resonance to boost the natural low end of your kick drum without making it flabby. Be careful, this one is easy and fun to overdo. LPF A low pass filter, because sometimes you need to tone down the beater click, not add to it. Detector This section applies only to the input level detector that is used to trigger the Click and Oomph. None of these processes will be applied to the direct signal to manipulate triggering. NOTE: The settings in this section can have a drastic effect on the sound of the Click and Oomph sections. It is strongly suggested that you configure this section first. HPF This is a high pass filter. It s main purpose is to prevent boomy resonant kick drums from creating false triggers. LPF This is a low pass filter. It s main purpose is to make it easier to prevent the cymbal and snare bleed from triggering the Click and Oomph. Lower this frequency to cut the high frequencies out of the detector Gate This value determines the threshold of the gate. This is a further helps to prevent false triggers from drum bleed, but can actually result in tighter, faster kicks in Sasquatch depending on the source material. Gain This boosts the output level of the detector. Turning up this value will increase the levels of the Click and Oomph sections, so be careful. It will also adjust the character of the Oomph Dive section if it is enabled. 6

7 Listen This bypasses the Click, Oomph and Direct sections and solos the detector section so that you can better listen for bleed and other issues that might cause false triggers. General Tips It is super important that you set up the detector settings to where they need to be. This will prevent track bleed and has a strong effect on the tone of the Oomph section. Sasquatch Kick Machine comes installed with a bunch of presets. Use them as a starting point to help you get a feel for how the controls sound. To change the values of the parameters, you can either adjust the knobs or click on the value to enter it manually. Double click a knob to reset it to its default setting. Presets Sasquatch comes installed with over 300 presets to help you get a feel for what it can do. Some of these presets are designed to be blended with the original kick, some are designed to completely replace the original kick, but of course you can use whatever settings you want however you want. The presets that are designed to replace the kick have the direct (dry) signal muted and are labelled as use with blip.wav. If you would like to blend these presets with your orignal click, simply unmute the Direct section after selecting the preset. Other presets are designed to be blended with the original kick. We do not recommend using blip.wav to trigger these presets because it will sound pretty nasty. If you would like to use these presets to replace your kick drum, simply mute the Direct section after selecting the preset. Blip.wav Included with Sasquatch is a wav file called Blip.wav. It is located in your install folder (usually under C:\Program Files\BozDigitalLabs\Sasquatch for windows or /Library/Application Support/Boz Digital Labs/Sasquatch on Mac). This is designed to be a trigger for Sasquatch that can be used with some sequencers. Because Sasquatch reacts dynamically to the incoming signal, some of the presets may sound different than originally intended (for better or for worse) if you use another sound to trigger Sasquatch. By using blip.wav to trigger Sasquatch, these presets will sound the same to you as it did to us. 7
