13 2.4 Principles of Connecting E1 Interface Input and output signals of the E1/G.703 interface can be fed in two ways: By using two coaxial cables with the impedance of 75 Ω, terminated with 1,6/5,6 plug-in connectors, or By using two screened balanced cables with the impedance of 120 Ω, or one screened double cable with the same impedance. Please remember to set jumpers inside the device in accordance with the type of cable used see point 4.4. To meet the requirements concerning generation of radioelectric interference, the following principles should be observed: The 1,6/5,6 plug-in connector should be installed on the coaxial cable in the way ensuring the good electric contact of the cable screen with the housing of connector around the whole periphery, Connection of balanced cables should be made by using the DB-9 plug-in connector equipped with metallic or metallised housing (casing), and the screen of cable/cables should contact the housing around the whole periphery. 14 The TM-81.1 device is equipped with two Ethernet 10BSE-T MDI-X tributary ports outputted to RJ-45 connectors. The cables connecting the TM-81.1 multiplexer with other devices are shown on Fig. 9 and 10. When connecting with the MDI-X port of other device (like hub or switch) the pairs of transmitter and receiver should be crossed (Fig, No. 9). For connecting with the MDI port (network card, router) pairs of transmitter and receiver should be connected directly (Fig. No. 10). Connection should be made by twisted cable, category 5 at least, with the characteristic impedance of 100 Ω. The RS-232/485 Interface The device is equipped with five asynchronous DCE ports outputted to DB-9 connectors located at rear panel. Each port may be configured for connection with the RS-232 or RS-485 interface. Type of connected interface is selectable by using switches that are individually dedicated to each port and located on the front panel. Scheme of connecting the RS-232 interface cable depends on pin arrangement and type of mating connector. Correct operation is ensured on condition that suitable circuits are connected and the transmitter receiver principle is observed during connecting the port with another interface. When configuring the interface to RS-485, a number of operations, resulting from the interface properties, should be performed in order to ensure proper operation of the interface. When switching to another type of interface, the type of transmitters and receivers change from unbalanced RS-232 to balanced RS-485 ones. Therefore the RS-485 interface should be connected by using twisted cable with the characteristic impedance of pairs equal to 120 Ω. lso, the principle of connecting +/- circuits with the same symbol (e.g. TD+/-) over one pair should be observed. s a standard, a RS-485 line uses a shielded balanced twisted cable for transmitting the signals. Up to 32 receivers/transmitters can be connected to balanced twisted bus. There are no special recommendations concerning the point where the device is connected to the bus and connecting the device at the end is not necessary, however the resistors with impedance equal to characteristic impedance of cable should be connected to at both ends of the bus. Due to specific nature of RS-485 topology, transmitters are required to set into high impedance state after completion of transmission or during no-transmission period. This state is seen by receiver as silence on the line. Most line receivers set into logical 1 when their inputs are open. In case of no transmission all transmitters are set to high impedance and their inputs are short-circuited by 120 Ω resistors. From the receiver point of view such state is undefined and, despite the use of hysteresis in receivers, occurrence of interferences on the line may cause switching of the receiver. In order to prevent this phenomenon, the line during notransmission is enforcedly set to appropriate state by adequate biasing of receiver s inputs. Each port of the TM-81.1 multiplexer is equipped with a set of resistors allowing terminating the bus. These resistors are connectable by using a set of jumpers described in point 4.5. IO81-1E 8 ugust 2004

15 ttaching the terminating resistor simultaneously induces line bias as shown below. Ground Vcc RD- RD+ Fig. 11. TM-81.1 multiplexer - connecting of terminating resistor and biasing the line. Each port of the TM-81.1 multiplexer, once configured for RS-485, can work in two modes of transmission, i.e. half-duplex or duplex mode. Setting the operating mode up is possible by using a set of configuration switches located on the front panel of the device. When the device is to work in half-duplex mode and transmit through one twisted pair, it is necessary to short the circuits RD+ TD+ and RD- TD- on the cable attached to the multiplexer. Through these ports the device can be connected with other telecommunication devices like SDH multiplexers, PCM-30 multiplexers or with any other signal sources featuring with the bitrate of 2048 kbit/s and equipped with similar interfaces. Next, the multiplexer is equipped with five full-duplex channel ports C1 C5 compliant with the ITU-T V.28 or EI-485 standard and two duplex channel ports C6 C7 compliant with IEE BSE-T standard in the physical layer, allowing connecting the device with telecommunication equipment with identical interfaces. These ports are also called tributary channels. The fundamental function of multiplexer is to transmit signals appearing in C1 C7 tributary channels through 64 kbit/s time slots of 2048 kbit/s stream introduced by one of line ports. data signal delivered to channel ports is directed to physical input transceivers, regenerated and then delivered to asynchronous/synchronous controllers. The access of tributary channels to the 2048 kbit/s stream is possible thanks to the integral, configurable dropping circuit (see Fig. 12). The dropping circuit can be configured by using a set of switches located at the front panel. When configuring this circuit, it is possible to: - Select tributary channels designated for transmission; - Select the group of time slots within the 2048 kbit/s stream and assign this group to tributary channels; - Establish the line port ( or B) from which time slots will be dropped; - Set operating mode for each tributary channel. Detailed description of the configuration function and methods of dropping are given in next sections of this manual. 18 3.3 Structure of 2048 kbit/s signal frame The frame of 2048 kbit/s signal, compliant with the ITU-T G.704 Recommendation, is composed of 256 bits numbered from 1 to 256 and is repeated with the frequency of 8 khz. Successive bits: 1 8, 9 16, 17 24,..., and form 32 channels, 64 kbit/s each. These channels are located in 32 time slots numbered from 0 to Fig. 14. Frame of the 2048 kbit/s signal For transmission of digital signals only time slots 1-15 and are used. The slot 0 is used for transporting the frame synchronization pattern, service bits and CRC-4 cyclic code remainder bits (if the generation option is set). The sixteenth slot dedicated to signalling is not used. The device allows setting the option of generation of CRC-4 code and multiframe synchronisation signal. The device is factory configured in such a way that the remainder of CRC-4 code and the pattern of multiframe synchronisation are not added to outgoing frame. To enable the function of adding the remainder of CRC-4 code, it is necessary to short JP16 contacts on position 17 (Fig. 15), whereas adding the multiframe synchronisation pattern is forced by shorting JP16 contacts on position 3. To activate these settings it is necessary to restart the device or initialise it by momentary shorting the RESET contacts. LTER PMC TMEL PMC JP16 RESET Fig. 15. 19 3.4 Principles of dropping the slots from 2048 kbit/s signal Principles of dropping the slots from the 2048 kbit/s signal result from the frame structure. During dropping process the slots TS0 and TS16 are omitted. ssuming that the TS(x) slot is the first timeslot designated for transmitting signals of n tributary channels, where x (1 15, 17 31), n (1 7), and: - if x 15 and x+(n 1) 15, then slots from TS(x) up to TS(x+n-1) will be dropped (Fig. 16a), - if x 17 and x+(n-1) 31, then slots from TS(x) up to TS(x+n-1) will be dropped (Fig. 16b), - if x 15 and x+(n-1) 16, then slots from TS(x) up to TS15 and from TS17 up to TS(x+n) will be dropped (Fig. 16c), and - if x+(n-1)>31, then slots from TS(x) up to TS31 and from TS1 up to TS(x+n-32) will be dropped (Fig. 16d). a) 0 16 TS(x) TS(x+n-1) b) 0 16 c) 0 16 TS(x) TS(x) TS(x+n) TS(x+n-1) d) 0 16 TS(x+n-32) TS(x) Fig. 16. 20 3.5 Selection of time slots ssignment of time slots TS of the 2048 kbit/s stream to tributary channels is made by using CFIGURTI switches. ssignment is effected by selecting the number of first slot from the group of slots intended for transmission. The selected group of slots is associated with the C1 C7 tributary channels in such a way that first tributary channel C1 is assigned to the first slot of the 2048 kbit/s stream, and next tributary channels C2 C7 are assigned to next successive slots. When selecting timeslot it is important to remember that: neither TS0 nor TS16 slots can be selected as a first slot, the TS0 and TS16 slots are not assignable, in compliance with principles described in point 3.4. In examples shown below the slot number 2 is selected, i.e. the group of slots 2 9 is designed for transmission. Selected timeslots are associated with tributary channels, but these channels do not occupy them. Slots are occupied when specified tributary channels are switched on by switches that configure the working parameters of tributary channels. 3.6 Selection and configuration of tributary channels Switching on and configuring of C1 C7 channels, i.e. occupying the selected timeslots, is possible by using the TRIBUTRY CHNNEL CFIGURTI switches, whereas the CHNNEL DIRECTI switches allow setting, for every channel, from which line port ( or B) the time slots will be dropped. 21 3.7 Operating modes of tributary channels Transmission between line ports and B and tributary channels C1 C7 can be effected in one of two ways: With interrupted transmission path - DROP mode, Without interrupting the transmission path - DROP & CTINUE mode. Selection of operating mode is made for each of seven tributary channels individually by using MODE OF OPERTI switches. Operating mode with interrupted transmission path -Drop mode If the tributary channel equivalent to the nth time slot is selected and the MODE OF OPERTI switch is set to the DROP position, then the transmission path between and B ports for this slot is interrupted in both directions. Connection between selected tributary channel and or B port through this slot is closed, and the 0 signal is sent in outgoing direction of the opposite port. In the example shown on Fig. 18 the C1 tributary channel is selected. This channel is associated with time slot number 2. Transmission path between ports and B for the slot 2 is interrupted in both directions. Connection between selected C1 channel and the port through this slot is closed. 22 Operating mode without interrupting the transmission path (Drop & Continue mode) If the tributary channel equivalent to the nth time slot is selected and the CHNNEL MODE OF OPERTI switch is set to the OR position, then the transmission path between and B ports for this slot is continuous. In the example shown on Fig. 19 the C1 tributary channel is selected. This channel is associated with time slot number 2. Connection between ports and B for the slot 2 is continuous. lso, the connection between selected C1 channel and the port through this slot is closed. 23 3.9 Operation with the TM-48 device The TM-81 multiplexer can operate with the TM-48 device, when transmission of data is effected through tributary RS-232 ports. synchronous RS-232 ports in the TM-81 device can be switched to operation with the TM-48 device. fter such switching the principle of inserting of asynchronous data stream appearing on the RS-232 port into the 64 kbit/s slot of the G.704 stream changes and becomes same as in the TM-48 device. Changing the operating mode of RS-232 ports require reconfiguration of the multiplexer in the way described in point 5.1. Switching over into the operating mode with the TM-48 device causes that RS-232 channels work at the speed of bit/s. In this mode neither configuration of the speed nor setting the start-stop frame format is necessary. When the device works as compatible with the TM-48 device, the co-operation with the RS-232 interface only is possible. The RS- 485 interface can t be used. Regardless the operating mode configured on the RS-232 ports, the way in which the devices on 2048 Mbit/s line ports are connected remains unchanged. Both point-to-point and bus configuration are permitted. lso, the principles of configuring the clock in such connections remain the same as for connections effected by using the TM-81 devices only Operation as a terminal equipment If there is no 2048 kbit/s signal connected to one of line ports ( or B), the multiplexer should work as a terminal device. Then the device works with the own 2048 kbit/s clock or with the clock reproduced from the G.703 interface and generates the frame compliant with the ITU-T G.704 recommendation towards the used port. The TM-81.1 device is able to automatically switch itself into the terminal device operating mode, or may be toggled into this mode by using a switch. If the device is not configured as the terminal device, then it switches automatically into the terminal device operating mode when the loss of 2048 kbit/s signal is detected or when it receives an IS signal ( sequence). t the same time, the alarm bit in the TS0 slot not containing synchronization pattern towards the used port is set. When the signal appears again or IS signal diminishes, the device resumes operation with two ports. If the multiplexer is configured as a terminal device by using a switch, then in the case of loss of 2048 kbit/s signal or detection of the IS signal from the direction of unused port the alarm bit in TS0 slot is not set. The multiplexer can be set as the terminal device by using CFIGURTI switches (see point 5.5 Selection of operating mode) Establishing the clock source Selection of clock source is possible only when the multiplexer is set to operation as a terminal device by using a switch. utomatic setting into terminal device operating mode always causes the use of clock from internal generator. IO81-1E 17 ugust 2004

24 In the examples shown on Fig. 20, the multiplexers TM-81.1 () and TM-81.1 (D) are configured as terminal devices. If the multiplexer will operate with the internal clock and the multiplexer D with the clock reproduced from the G.703 interface, then transmission in both directions is fully synchronous. and D multiplexers may also operate independently with their own internal clocks. However operation of both multiplexers, configured as terminal devices, with reproduced clocks is not possible. The clock source is selectable by using CFIGURTI switches (see point 5.5 Selection of operating mode). Configuration of the clock for the chain of TM-81.1 multiplexers 4 Installation and Operation 4.1 Introduction Prior to putting the multiplexer into normal service, it is necessary to install it and set-up properly, in accordance with recommendations given below. 4.2 Operating conditions The TM-81.1 multiplexer can operate continuously in closed rooms in environmental conditions presented in the Specifications chapter. The device should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Ventilation slots in the multiplexer housing must not be clogged. It is not recommended to stand the device on heat-emitting objects, although it can be placed on other identical device or installed in the rack in which other devices work. In this case an unrestricted flow of air should be ensured or, if necessary, forced ventilation system installed. 4.3 Installation The TM-81.1 multiplexer can operate as a standalone device or be mounted in 19 or 21 inches rack. For installation in the rack, special mounting brackets included in delivery should be screwed to side walls of the device. IO81-1E 18 ugust 2004

26 4.4 Selection of input and output impedance of line ports To adjust the multiplexer to operation with balanced cables (impedance of 120 Ω) or coaxial cables (impedance of 75 Ω), the JP1, JP2-4, JP5-7, JP8-11, JP12-15, and JP16 jumpers (positions 4 and 5) should be set as shown in the table on Fig. 22. Jumpers are accessible after removing the cover. To get the access to jumpers one should undo four screws from the top of housing, then undo four side screws and remove upper cover. The value of characteristic impedance can be set up for each port individually. The multiplexer is factory set for operation with balanced cables with the impedance of 120Ω. 27 4.5 Configuring the contact points of RS-232/485 channel ports To configure contact points of channel ports it is necessary to set jumpers on the board with channel interfaces in appropriate positions (see Fig. 23). For each channel ports, C1 C5, it is individually possible to: Set the DSR line into or OFF state, or connect it with the DTR line; Set the CTS line into or OFF state, or connect it with the RTS line; Set the DCD line into or OFF state. Jumpers are accessible after removing the cover. To get the access to jumpers one should undo four screws from the top of housing, then undo four side screws and remove upper cover. Factory settings are as follows: DTR line is connected with DSR line (DTR DSR), RTS line is connected with CTS line (RTS CTS), and DCD line is set to OFF. C5 C3 C4 C1 C2 Fig. 23. 28 Figure No. 23 illustrates the position of jumpers for setting the zero modem in the RS-232 interface configuration. Note: It is very important to set RS-485 terminating jumpers to OFF when setting the device to RS-232 interface. Wrong positions of RS-485 bus biasing jumpers may cause improper operation of the RS-232 interface. Figure 24 shows positions of RS-485 interface terminating jumpers set to OFF. Setting the termination and bias jumpers to is justified only when the type of interface is configured to RS-485. Note: In case the interface type is set to RS-485, the DTR DSR, RTS CTS, and DCD jumpers should be removed, otherwise the RS-485 interface may work incorrectly. 29 4.6 Power supply Mains The multiplexer in TM version can be powered with both DC and C voltage; the latter with the frequency of Hz and rated value of V. Changing the power supply mains voltage from 230 V to 110 V and vice versa does not require any modifications of device settings. The mains socket the multiplexer is connected to should be equipped with neutral (zero) pin. Connection to the power network without neutral wire is permitted, provided the grounding terminal located on rear panel is connected to ground. Simultaneous grounding through grounding terminal and neutral earthing through power cord is not allowed. Connecting the multiplexer to this power loop from which equipment capable to emit significant pulse interferences, like commutator motors, discharge lamps etc. should be avoided. To ensure maximum reliability, use of the UPS power supply unit is much recommended. Note: Double fuse - phase/neutral. Every mains power cord is protected by separate fuse installed inside the multiplexer. Some elements of power supply unit, located at the PCB, may be live. For versions with V mains power supply (TM ) the plug on power cord also plays a role of circuit-breaking element. Therefore the mains socket should be installed possibly close to the device and should be easily accessible to the personnel. Battery pack Multiplexer in the TM version is supplied with DC voltage with rated value within the range of V. Supply voltage should be fed to the socket with external screw connectors. Polarity of supply voltage is not significant and can be chosen arbitrarily. Grounding terminal located on the device housing should be connected to ground. Grounding wire should feature with low impedance at high frequencies. The device designed for supplying from V DC source (TM ) is not equipped with built-in circuit breaker, therefore it is recommended to install an easily accessible circuit-breaking device in fixed cabling.
