This is a great place with plenty of room, swimming pool and an outstanding ham station to look over. Bring something to BBQ and a dish to share (i.e. chips, salad, beans, etc). The pool is open. This is always a great dinner / time for an eyeball QSO. To get to Ron's place, head out west on Ridgecrest Blvd towards the setting sun to Brady. Turn north (right) on Brady. 3 Ice Cream Social For the August meeting on the 10th we usually hold an Ice Cream social. This will be at Baskin & Robbins Ice Cream, starting at around 730pm. We will be out in the parking lot. Hope to see you all there. SARC Field Day 2011 Report On site Report Gene W5DQ There was lots of help in setting up and in the initial operations. As the day wore on and the temps rose, the number of folks dwindled to a hearty few who stuck through until early evening and overnight. Band conditions were somewhat below what I had hoped for. The upper HF bands seemed to do well after a brief period of operator vs. equipment where the equipment was winning for a short while until the kinks could be determined and worked out. After that, from what I observed, the GOTA station was working quite a few on SSB with Ryan, his dad Ron, Harry and a few others (don't recall everyone) at the controls. Micah was like the proverbial granite wall, sitting there cracking off one QSO after another while I tuned and tuned 6M looking for anything resembling a signal. I had to leave a little before 8PM but gave a couple folks who planned to stay over the night a quick operators gouge on how to work the FT-100D I had in place for 6M just in case 6M did something weird and actually opened up after I left. Only logged 12 QSOs on 6M. Poor propagation was the culprit as the VHF activity map at VHFDX.NET showed the midwest and east coast tearing up 6M while the west coast area was flat broke. Returning Sunday morning around 8AM found no fatalities from the night before which was good and the GOTA station and the PSK31 station in full swing. I got back on to 6M and managed to work a few before we hit the end at 11:00. We had a group of visitors drop by around 10AM for a look at what we were doing and actuall got one of them to take the mic in hand and give try to QSO someone. I don't believe he had any luck but at least we got a photo and a name to show he did give it a go. Shutdown and cleanup was a little less supported than setup had been but it was completed before the temps got to hot and everyone departed safe and sound from the park around 11:30AM. All in all, I believe everyone had a good time and my hat is off to Ed for his marvelous effort in coordinating this year's FD activities even if his new son decided to come a few days early and spoil his participation. Micah is the FD Participant of the Year winner in my book. He stuck through it from start to finish and made quite a few PSK31 QSOs (haven't seen a summary yet of our efforts). Many of the new hams from the last few training classes came by and got to see what FD was all about and I am betting they will be back next year for more 'fun in the sun'. Probably the person who had the most fun was Ryan. He was everywhere helping out with the setup and securing the tarps with 3

4 his dad Ron when Saturday's windstorm hit up. He also was a ferocious operator on the GOTA station trying work everyone he heard. A hardcore DX'er and contester in the making.
