PD78X Can t Read and Write Detection By Angelia Yong Repair Case Section 1. Fault Phenomenon Connect PD78X and PC with programming cable, PC can t read and write frequency by programming software. 2. Cause Analyze According to the fault phenomenon, the fault may be caused by software or hardware problem. 1) Software problem: a. Programming software version is not coherent with host version. b. USB driver is not stable. The instability of DMR USB driver will cause instable telecommunication. Normally, the problem will be solved by plugging USB again or reinstalling USB driver. 2) Hardware problem Relevant parts: host programming connector (the connector in the side of front case), FPC of main board (the signal cable of front case kit and main board, short form FPC ), OMAP, etc. 3. Cases for reference Case 1. Model Frequency Host Version PD A Fault Phenomenon After connected programming cable with PD780, booted the radio, read the frequency, USB1 of CPS port was normal. Click yes, below interface appeared. Fault Analysis The fault was caused by hardware of the host. Detection procedure a. Exchange another normal radio to read frequency, normal, exclude USB programming cable, software, PC problem. It is normal. 6
Repair Case Section b. Check whether the stylus contacts of spare parts of front case are rusty or scratched or not. c. Disassemble the radio, check whether the FPC inside the front case is completed, folded, broken or not, normal. d. Check the FPC that connects front case kit and RF board, FPC is found as loosing. Plug FPC, make sure it is firm, test again, it can read frequency normally. Conclusion The sponge attached to silicon pad which is used to fix FPC is deformation and aging. FPC will become loosen when the portable radio falls, so that poor contacts occur. 7
MD78X Low RX Sensitivity Repair Case Repair Case Section By Warren Liu 1. Fault Phenomenon 1) MD78X RX communication range is very close, but the TX communication range is normal. 2) Use the analyzer to test MD78X s RX sensitivity, the value is more than -119dbm (e.g. -110dbm). 2. Cause Analyze Reason One: Software Malfunction 1) Programming software wrong configuration. 2) The radio s firmware wrong, need to refresh the firmware. Reason Two: Hardware Malfunction 1) Main PCB board malfunction: RX high-frequency amplifier circuit, RX IF circuit. The easily broken components are: First IF filter, high frequency amplifier tube. 3. Repair Case Model Frequency Range Firmware Version MD MHz R Fault Phenomenon MD780 RX sensitivity is very low. The analog channel s RX sensitivity is -100dbm, but the TX is normal. Cause Analyze After using the radio for a period time, the radio will have some low RX sensitivity problem, this problem should be caused by the hardware fault, such as high-frequency amplifier circuit fault, IF circuit fault. When the radio is normal, the RX sensitivity should be better than -119dbm, but after testing by the analyzer, the radio s sensitivity is -100dbm, this is abnormal. We can use the signal injection method to find out which part have problem. Test Procedure a. Use the programming software to read the radio, check whether the squelch level setting is OK. See the picture as follows: Fig 1 8
Repair Case Section b. See Figure 2, Use the analyzer from test point TP6109 which is on the right side of Z6100 (First IF filter), input a 73.35MHz, -100dBm signal, we can see that the radio s LED light turns green, and the speaker have sound. From the above test, we can judge that the circuit after the Z6100 (include Z6100) is OK, the malfunction is before Z6100: the high-frequency amplifier and mixing circuit. c. See Figure 2, Use the analyzer from the 4 th pin of T6100 (RX signal input) input a RX signal: the frequency is the current channel RX frequency, signal amplitude is -100dBm, and we see that the radio s LED light turns green, the speaker have sound. From the above test, we judge that the mixing circuit is working fine. d. See Figure 3, Use the analyzer from the 2nd pin of Q6102 (high-frequency amplifier tube) input a RX signal: the frequency is the current channel RX frequency, signal amplitude is -115dBm, and we see that the radio s LED light is off, the radio cannot open the squelch, that is abnormal. From above test, we can judge that the high-frequency amplifier circuit have problem, may be the high-frequency amplifier tube is broken. 9
Repair Case Section e. After replace high-frequency amplifier tube Q6102, test the radio s RX sensitivity is -119dBm, the radio back to normal, the malfunction is eliminated. Summary This radio s RX sensitivity low is caused by the high-frequency amplifier tube broken. The repair of digital radio is similar to the analog radio, we can also use the signal injection method to find out which part of the circuit have problem. 10
RD98X Can t Transmit Repair Case By Angelia Yong Repair Case Section 1. Fault Phenomenon 1) RD98X can receive up signal, but can t transmit; no down signal has been sent out. 2) Connect RD98X with power supply, test it, only RX and only TX are normal, but can t transmit. 2. Cause Analyze 1) From above fault phenomenon, the radio has a problem of can t transmit; 2) Software problem: data disorder; the problem can be solved by downloading software again; 3) Hardware problem: baseband board problem, board to board FPC damage or loosen. 3. Typical Maintenance Case Case 1 Model Frequency Range Firmware Version RD MHzz R Fault Phenomenon RD980 can accept up signal, but can t transmit. Cause Analyze 1) The radio can accept up signal. It means the receiver board is working. We could test whether the RX and TX are normal or not before dissembling the radio; 2) If no obvious abnormity has been found, we could try to download software again. Detection steps 1) Test RX, TX separately, both can work normally. It means receive board and excitation board are working; 2) Dissemble the radio, check FPC that connects baseband board and receiver board/excitation board, it is loosen. Plug and fix the FPC, test the radio again, normal. The problem is solved. Conclusion The radio has fallen off or suffered severe vibration. This causes FPC loosen and conduct the fault that the radio cannot transmit. 11

TC500 No RX Audio Output Fault Repair Case By Angelia Yong Repair Case Section 1. Fault Phenomenon Description There is no power on tone when power on TC500 radio. TX communication is normal, and it can RX, the green light flashes, but it can t output the audio from speaker. 2. Fault Reason Analysis 1) Radio has got the fault of not outputting audio according to the fault phenomenon description above. 2) Mainly check RX circuit, audio process circuit, audio amplifier circuit for this no RX audio and powering on power on tone fault. 3. Specific Maintenance Case Radio Type Frequency Range Firmware Version TC MHZ V2.0 Fault Phenomenon There is no power on tone when power on TC500 radio. TX communication is normal, and it can RX, the green light flashes, but it can t output the audio from speaker. Fault Analysis Firstly read frequency to exclude possibility of unmatched signaling to cause no RX audio problem, then disassemble the radio and check IF RX demodulation circuit, audio process circuit, audio amplifier circuit. Test Steps(see figure 1,figure 2) 1) Connect the radio with PC with programming cable, read frequency, check the current channel information, TX/RX frequency is MHZ, has no CTCSS/CDCSS. So it has nothing to do with CTCSS/CDCSS setting, we need to check related hardware circuit. 2) Use analyzer to output MHZ signal with -70dBm signal strength and 1KHZ audio frequency to radio, right now radio green light is on, but no RX audio output. 3) Use multimeter to test the 4 th pin VCC power supply of IC1 under current situation, it is 5V, normal. 4) Use oscillograph to test the 9 th pin of IC1 s AF output audio signal, it is 150mv, normal. 5) Use oscillograph to test the 4 th pin of IC8 (audio signal process amplifier), it has 20mv audio signal input, normal; test the 10 th pin, no output, use multimeter to test the 2th pin of IC8 s VCC 6V power supply, normal. Now we doubt IC8 is damaged. 6) The 10 th pin audio signal output amplitude is 480mv after replacing IC8, normal. 7) Power on radio again and it has powering in power on tone, and the speaker has normal RX audio output, the fault is eliminated. 16
Repair Case Section Summarization IC8 is the audio amplifier IC; it will cause no audio output fault after damage. 17
TC610 Low Voltage Alert Detection By Angelia Yong Repair Case Section 1. Fault phenomenon description After power on TC610, in the condition of full battery, without any operation, the red light is twinkling, and it makes out didi sound, the phenomenon is low voltage alert. 2. Fault phenomenon analysis 1) From above phenomenon, in the condition of full battery, low voltage alert happens means the radio is not normal; 2) The reason cause low voltage alert: a. The software set incorrect low voltage alert value. We could log on the adjustment modulation mode to set correct value. b. Hardware failure. Check the battery volume, test the voltage of the sampling circuit and test CPU circuit. 3. Maintenance case Case 1 Model Frequency Host Version TC MHz V Fault phenomenon Install a full battery to TC610, without any operation; the didi sound comes from the speaker; the red light is twinkling. Connect the machine with 7.4V DC regulated power. The same phenomenon happens. Fault analysis From above analysis, the radio has a problem of low voltage alert. We can check whether the modulation software is normal or not. If there is no problem with the software configuration, then we can dissemble radio and check the relevant circuits. Detection steps (Fig 1) 1) Power on the radio, connect the programming cable to it. Log on the adjustment modulation mode, the low voltage alert value is 157, it is normal. (the normal value should be ). 2) Refer to Fig 1, test the battery sampling voltage (the joint of R642 and R648), the voltage is 4.3V, normal; 3) Test CPU BAT-DET (60) pin voltage, it is 0V, abnormal; Normally, the voltage should be 4.3V; 4) Test CPU BAT-DET(60)pin voltage and the voltage between the sampling points R644, the resistor is damaged, replace the resistor, the radio is back to normal. Problem solved. 18
Repair Case Section Conclusion The fault is caused by the battery sampling voltage (normally 4v-5v) not being sent to the CPU. It makes the CPU mistakes the battery out of power so that sends out low voltage alert
TR800 Can t Power On Detection By Angelia Yong Repair Case Section 1. Fault Phenomenon 1) After connecting TR800 to 220V alternating power supply, press power on key, the LCD backlight turns off after twinkling for a few seconds, it can t power on. 2) After connecting TR800 to 220V alternating power supply, press power on key, the radio has no response, can t power on. 2. Fault Analysis 1) From above phenomenon, the fault of the radio is can t power on. 2) The principle of powering on TR800 TR800 is consisted of two TM800 mobile radios, one logic control board and one power supply module with switch. One of the mobile radios is the host, the other one is auxiliary machine. When powering on the radio, the power supply module will provide a voltage of 13.8v to auxiliary machine first. So the auxiliary machine will be started first. Then the logic control board of TR800 will start up. The power on of TR800 is finished. Press the setup key, the logic control board starts to activate the host. 3. Maintenance case Model Frequency Host version TR MHz V Fault phenomenon Connect TR800 to 220V alternating power supply, press the power on key, the radio has no response, it can t be turn on. Fault analysis From fault phenomenon, it will probably be the problem of power supply circuit that has caused TR800 can t power on problem. Detection steps (Fig 1) 1) Check the fuse of the alternating power supply socket which is at the end of TR800, it is closed circuit, normal. 2) Dissemble the cover, test the output voltage which is transferred from internal 220V to 13.8V power supply module, it is 13.8V, normal. So that we can judge that the power supply circuit is with no problem. Then we need to check auxiliary machine, host and logic control board. 3) Dissemble the auxiliary machine and the host; connect them to the control board of TM800 separately for testing. The test result shows the auxiliary machine and the host can be open normally. It means the auxiliary machine and the host is with no problem, the fault should be in the logic control board. 4) Resemble the auxiliary machine and the host, refer to fig 1, test the voltage of the ninth pin of J0107, it is 13.8V, normal. 20
Repair Case Section 5) Test the 3 rd pin of 9V regulator U0109, it is 13.8V, the first pin of 9V regulator U0109 is 9V, normal; 6) Test the 5th pin of 5V regulator U0108, it is 9V, the first pin is 0V, abnormal; so that the input of U0108 is normal, but no output, we suspect that it is damaged. 7) Replace U0108, test the first pin of it, it is 5V, normal; And TR800 can power on normally now. Problem solved. Conclusion U0108 is the 5V regulator IC. It is the power supply for MCU of the logic control board. It can t work when it is damaged. And this is the cause of TR800 can t power on. Figure 1:The MCU circuit of the logic control board of TR800 21
