3 1. Introduction The GPS Status program is a client network application that is a part of the NaviPac SW package. It can be started from in the online program's View menu: GPS Status or toolbar s icon: 2. The GUI The Application is a SDI based. This means that the application only includes a single document display. The program is allowing the operator to view various status data on the GPS system(s). The data updated in the window will only be available if the GPS is set to use NMEA format 3 (Global Positioning System Position), which is default selected by NaviPac. The window can be presented in either normal mode or extended mode 2.1 Normal The default view includes a few basic status parameters for surface (up to 6) and remote GPS interfaces (up to 10) Figure 1 Normal GPS status GUI in NaviPac The window include one line per active GPS, as each GPS gives the following information (designed after GGA and GGK messages) Name: The instrument name Mode: GPS quality indicator: Page 3 of 8
4 #Sat: NONE: Could not recognise the GPS mode GPS: Ordinary GPS type DIFF Differential GPS RTK Real time Kinematics GPS HIGH-P For Geco-Prakla instruments the highest accuracy Number of GPS satellites being used. Range: 0 to maximum number of GPS satellites. HDOP: This field gives horizontal dilution of precision. Dif. Id: This field gives identification of reference station. Age: Gives either observed data age (Ashtech GGA in RTK mode), calculated age (From timestamp of message to start of cycle) or user defined latency (remote GPS) Geoidal Height: Gives the Geoidal separation in meters. Antenna Height: This field gives the height of the antenna in meters, i.e. whether the vessel is above or below datum. Huge variance in antenna height might indicate low quality information. For RTK this figure is very accurate and can be used to calculate tide and bias in heave. 2.2 Extended view If the GPS supports extended information (please refer to e.g. UKOOA standard) like NMEA GSA and GST or GECO GPS format, a extended view can be available: Page 4 of 8

Please note that remote GPS s only supports the most basic parameters. Name: The instrument name Mode: GPS quality indicator: NONE: Could not recognise the GPS mode GPS: Ordinary GPS type Diff Differential GPS RTK Real time Kinematics GPS HIGH-P For Geco-Prakla instruments the highest accuracy #Sat: Number of GPS satellites being used. Range: 0 to maximum number of GPS satellites. HDOP: Page 5 of 8
6 Gives horizontal dilution of precision. VDOP: Gives vertical dilution of precision. PDOP: Gives total dilution of precision. Lat: The observed latitude. Long: The observed longitude Height: Gives the height of the antenna in meters, i.e. whether the vessel is above or below datum. Huge variance in antenna height might indicate low quality information. For RTK this figure is very accurate and can be used to calculate tide and bias in heave. Age: Gives either observed data age (Ashtech GGA in RTK mode) or calculated age (From timestamp of message to start of cycle) 95 % Maj, Min & Or.: Gives standard deviation of semi-major axis, semi-minor axis and orientation of error ellipse. 95% Lat, Long, H: Gives standard deviation of position and height. UTC: Gives UTC time of position. Ext.Rel: External reliability not available in NMEA UnitV: Unit variance not available in NMEA PRN: Gives a binary coded list of satellites. Bit i is set if satellite i is used. #Ref: Number of reference stations DifId: Identification of reference station. Geoidal Height: Gives the Geoidal separation in meters. Cage: Age of differential correction FIX: The raw GPS status indicator (e.g. NMEA GGA value 1-8) Page 6 of 8
7 2.3 Histogram View From the View menu you may activate two histogram views GPS Status (1= stand-alone, 2 = differential, 3 = RTK/Highest) Number of satellites It opens one window per GPS receiver 3. The menu The menu has three entries File, Options and Help. It gives the following functions: File, Exit: Stop the program File, Save setting: Save window size and placement to registry. Will be used as default setting. File, Print Generate bitmap of actual window and print it on default printer. This is also available in the toolbar print icon. Options, Stay on top: Keep the window as topmost Options, Show Extended info: Toggle between normal (default) and extended data view. This is also available in the toolbar Exp icon. View, GPS Status Histogram Opens additional windows with statistics on GPS mode View, GPS Satellite Histogram Opens additional windows with statistics on number of GPS satellites Page 7 of 8
