Professional photographers, television engineers and motion picture studios will all agree that lighting is a critical element in any imaging application. In other words, the quality of the image is directly proportional to the quality of the lighting. This rule is consistent with all optical applications and is especially true with digital imaging. Compared to the human eye, the digital/video camera is less tolerant of unfavorable lighting conditions. It detects and processes unwanted information such as flicker and glare* caused by conventional light sources. Digital imaging further compounds this problem by compressing the image before processing it. The best way to compensate for these inherent problems is to feed the camera the proper amount of high quality light. Don t worry, there s no need to become a lighting expert. The XL is our top-of-the-line unit featuring remote control dimming capability and three fluorescent lamps. The S is a sleek, two-lamp, track mountable unit. Both models feature a removable diffuser. Approximately 20% brighter than the S (at maximum intensity), the XL includes three compact fluorescent T5 lamps, an opal Plexiglas diffuser, and an electronic dimming ballast. All XL units feature adjustable light intensity, controllable with an infrared remote control. Light intensity can be adjusted to provide more key light for people with darker skin tones and less for those with lighter complexions. Adjustable lighting also provides essential fill light which fills in dark areas and dead spots left by conventional lighting. Glossary The following list consists of lighting terms that will help you better understand why Navitar lighting is superior to standard room lighting when it comes to digital imaging. Color Rendering Index (CRI) A rating system that describes the effect of a light source on the color appearance of objects (compared to a standard reference source of the same color temperature). A rating of 100 is the highest possible CRI. Typical cool white fluorescent lamps have a CRI of 62. Lamps with rare-earth phosphors can have a CRI of 80 or higher. Color Temperature The color a light source appears to be, ranging from reddish (lower color temperatures) to bluish (higher color temperatures). Measured in degrees Kelvin (ºK). Diffused Light Produces a soft light with soft shadows while illuminating a relatively large area. Illumination is indistinct rather than obvious, distinct light beams. Fill Light Supplementary illumination positioned to reduce or eliminate shadows created by key light. Flare Over-saturation of light that appears when too much light is picked-up by a camera s lens and reflected off its internal glass elements. Foot Candle (fc) A measurement of illumination where one unit is equal to the light of a candle at a distance of one foot. Glare A condition caused by light within the visible field that is brighter than the level of light to which the eyes are adapted. Key Light The principal directional light. Usually positioned off-center and angled towards the subject. Three-point Lighting A basic lighting method in which key light, fill light and back light are all used to illuminate the subject while providing depth and texture.

Will my ceiling support them? The XL units weigh approximately 8.3 lbs (3.8 kg). The S units weigh 8.8 lbs (4 kg). Most suspended ceiling grids are rated to support more than 50 lbs. All units are shipped with a supplemental support harness. What is the warranty period? One year parts and labor, excluding bulbs. (Call for a written copy of the complete warranty.)
