2 This document is a guideline for a short demonstration of the Océ ColorStream 3500 and its main components. Chapter 1 includes a proposed introduction for a demonstration with information on why we made the Océ ColorStream 3500 and what makes the Océ ColorStream 3500 unique. Chapter 2 is a proposed storyline for a live demo of the Océ ColorStream 3500 guiding the demonstrator through the machine based on the functional elements in the Océ ColorStream Chapter 3 explains the technological components in the Océ ColorStream 3500 in more detail to make it convenient for people to perform product demos to customers with a very technical focus. 3 1 Introduction With the JetStream family Océ succeeded in acquiring a leading position in the inkjet production printing segment. The JetStream has been very well received in the market and can be considered a great success. To be able to fulfill even more customer requirements especially in the transaction and direct mail segments and thus to extend the leading position Océ started a project to develop an efficient full color offering that also enables an easy migration to full color inkjet for companies that have classical toner continuous feed systems. The result of this project, the ColorStream 3500, joins the portfolio of Océ continuous feed solutions as a migration to color solution next to the ColorStream Flex. b/w Transition from b/w to Color Full Color Océ VarioStream Océ ColorStream Océ ColorStream Flex Océ JetStream 1000/1400 Océ JetStream Océ JetStream 1500/2200/3000 Océ JetStream 2800/3300 Océ VarioStream 7100 Océ VarioStream 7000/8000 Océ ColorStream 3500 By incorporating a number of smart innovations the ColorStream 3500 is a high productive full color solution as well as a highly efficient monochrome continuous feed system and an ideal solution to enable a gradual migration to full color over time. The Océ ColorStream 3500 is a 75 meters per minute addition to the portfolio that extends our reach within the inkjet sector to fulfill customer s requirements, that couldn t previously be met. It is a highly flexible and versatile full-color inkjet printing system tailored to the demands of today s transactional, TransPromo, direct mail and commercial printers. It is ideal for efficient production of mail, publishing and commercial applications up to 24 Mio A4 impressions a month. The system was especially developed to bring the benefits of high volume inkjet printing into environments that cannot be easily addressed with an Océ JetStream system, i.e. especially datacenters with their size, weight and logistical requirements or the need for efficient simplex and duplex flexibility. Next to being a very versatile and productive full color inkjet system, the Océ ColorStream 3500 offers flexibility and growth paths from monochrome to full color plus two additional colors and from simplex to duplex with the proven Océ twin concepts. While the ColorStream 3500 has the same productivity and print quality as the JetStream 1000, i.e. 75 meter or 505/1010 A4 per minute, there are several unique features in the system that outclasses competition. 3/22 December 2011 Intl. Differentiation between the Océ ColorStream 3500 and the Océ JetStream 1000 can be based on different product features and the underlying philosophy. The main differences can be found in their footprint, the simplex/duplex efficiency and their overall system design. The JetStream 1000 resembles a heavy duty offset style press with a compact construction, a small footprint and is ideal for duplex printing (common in print service provider and graphic arts segments). The ColorStream 3500 has a typical data centre look and feels and the simplex duplex efficiency the existing continuous feed users often require. The ColorStream 3500 is the first Océ Poing developed, designed and manufactured inkjet system - an important step in our product history. It had its global premiere at the Canon Expo in Tokyo in November 2010, and was then gradually launched in the rest of the world throughout the first half of First shipments started in January 2011 with general global availability since July /22 December 2011 Intl. 5 2 Océ ColorStream 3500 Product Demonstration 2.1 X-Ray of the Océ ColorStream 3500 The X-ray of an Océ ColorStream 3500 below shows you all functional elements that are integrated into the system that can be mentioned during a product demonstration. In chapter 2.2 you will find a proposed product demonstration that will show the customer those functional elements in a 5-10 minutes demo. The X-ray shows a mixed Océ ColorStream 3500, i.e. it contains all elements of a Océ ColorStream 3500 Single as well as the components of Twin tower 1 and 2. It is noted at the respective functional elements if they are only found in one of those three configurations A 5 X B 3 1. Input paper drive including sticky roller 2. 6 2.2 Océ ColorStream 3500 Demonstration Textbook Unwinder (not shown in X-ray) Sticky Roller (1) Friction Break (2) Steering Frame (3) Synch Sensor (5) Preprint Sensor (6) Encoder (X) The ColorStream 3500 is an extremely precise high speed printing system. To ensure the high print quality and stability you expect from an Océ production printer, the system comes standard with the Océ Unwinder. It is an integral part of the Océ Color stream 3500 system, ensuring a tight web feed which is essential in inkjet printing. The Unwinder and the printer and in constant communication to ensure paper is fed at a consistent speed and with consistent tension to maximize the high image quality offered by Océ ColorStream This Unwinder also give us the unique ability to print /539,7 mm paper which enables full bleed edge to edge printing and maximizes production productivity. Works like a lint brush to take unwanted dust off the paper to ensure optimal print quality. Keeps the paper tension inside the printing system at a constant level to ensure highest print quality. Keeps paper in perfect position which enables full bleed edge to edge printing and excellent front to back registration. The steering frame is controlling the paper position using a paper edge sensor (4) which is positioned on the back paper edge in tower #1 and the front paper edge in tower #2 and a single unit To synchronize tower #2 on the printed image of tower #1 synchronization marks are printed in tower #1 and read using the Synch mark sensor in tower #2. This ensures front to back registration of better than 0,2mm. This sensor is used to synchronize the images printed to a potential preprinted image (e.g. offset preprinted shells) when needed. Synchronization is done based on preprinted marks or a teaching based on tractor holes. Tracks the speed of the paper web and controls the frequency of the fire pulses given to the print heads, enabling the printer to print in the speed ramps. This substantially reduces paper waste as it enables the Océ ColorStream 3500 to stop without paper waste. This significantly reduces the paper waste which in some other systems can be as much as 300 ft / close to 100 meters! When you want to do a visual quality check, the operator can simply press the pause button and the system will stop, enabling the operator to conduct the quality check without paper waste. The important factor here is that after 1 minute, if the operator hasn t already pressed the start button, the system will automatically pick up printing from where it left off. This ensures no degradation in the print quality or the unwanted bleeding that might occur in prints that have not yet dried. 6/22 December 2011 Intl. Continuous Feed Marketing Team

7 Ionizer (7) Marking Unit (8) The ionizer builds up a static to repel dust from the marking unit. The marking unit is set up in a very compact and clean design. The standard configuration is comprised of four rows of each five solid industrial print heads per tower: (Digi Dot), Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. In addition, there are two extra spaces to accommodate future or existing need for MICR, special inks or a Custom Color. The Océ DigiDot technology is based on the Kyocera KJ 4B inkjet heads. They are designed to offer long-lasting durability in industrial environments. Fewer modules (40 in a full color twin) than in competitive systems (in some systems more than 110 modules) are needed for the full print width and the reliability is significantly higher. This ensures availability of the Océ ColorStream 3500 when you need it. Head Safe (to be explained when explaining position 8 marking unit) What happens when you are printing monochrome for an entire shift and need to switch to color? With other systems, operators have to bring the print heads back to life through a manual cleaning process that can take from 40 to 90 min because left unused, the inkjet print heads dry out. Not with the Océ 3500 Color Stream. Each of our print head bars have their own independent compartment. So unlike other systems that have an either all on or all off printing philosophy, we are able to isolate each individual print head based on need. To ensure maximum efficiency in monochrome and full color printing Océ developed the innovative Head Safe technology which essentially works like a pen cap. When individual print heads are not in use, they move to the back of the system in a secure, clean position, pick up the parking position (aka. purge cap) that keeps the print head from drying out and thus remain in a conditioned environment when not needed. When the operator is ready to start a new job that requires the unused print heads, it is a simple 5 min process. This feature adds to the systems ability to help seamlessly transition predominantly monochrome workflows to a full color or spot color workflow. No other piezo electric drop on demand system on the market gives you this kind of flexibility and support for a monochrome to color transition strategy. 7/22 December 2011 Intl. 8 Data Integrity Mark (9) Drying Saddles (10) How important is data integrity to your operation? Océ s patented Data Integrity Mark is part of every engine. We print a discrete CMYK mark on each page in both Printer 1 and 2. If marks are not aligned, the printer stops and notifies the operator via the user console thus ensuring data integrity. The system gives you flexibility in where to place the marks to better accommodate your customer s files. Up until this point, the print is still wet and needs to be dried before finishing. For that it passes over two drying saddles (formerly known as the pre-heating saddles in the VarioStream family). The saddles are proven systems that require no maintenance. A nice feature is the operator s ability to adjust the temperature of the heating saddles to address different media thus ensuring every job is dried evenly regardless of the paper it is printed on and the coverage. Cooling / Blowing Unit (11) Cooling / Chilling Roller (not shown in X-ray) integrated into turning unit After the drying process, the paper is cooled down for reverse side to be printed. First, a blower unit blows ambient air onto the paper. In a twin configuration the second step of the cooling is a liquid chilled roller that is integrated into the turning unit in twin that is to be found between tower #1 and tower #2. Through that roller, the paper is reconditioned to the characteristics it had when it entered printer #1. This whole process is essential because one key element in maintaining print quality is to ensure that the temperature of the paper going into the first engine is the same as the temperature going into the second engine. This gives much more accurate registration and prevents different dot gain in the two engines. Turning unit (not shown in X-ray) Depending on the type of twin configuration, the paper is turned for duplex printing through either a 180 degree turn bar (I-Twin), a 90 degree turn bar (L-Twin) or a slightly more complex turning construction (H-Twin). 9 Output paper drive with friction break System (12) This brings us to the output paper drive with the last part of the tight web paper transport. We mentioned the importance of a tight web feed into and inkjet system to ensure quality and productivity. On the back end, the friction break system converts the tight web feed into a loose web feed which enables numerous post processing options used an industry standard Type1 interface. General Comments following the hardware overview or can be inserted as seen fit So what do you think it takes for an operator to run this system? You d be surprised! Apart from the regular cleaning known from all printing systems the items the operator has to manage is paper feeding and the ink and Océ has taken great care in designing a system that truly takes the Operator into consideration. The back of the system: The Océ Color Stream 3500 ink bottles utilize a passive RFID Tag designed to prevent the wrong ink color going into the wrong compartment. Should the operator place an ink bottle in the wrong compartment a warning will appear on the operator console preventing a disastrous interruption in production. We have also designed a temperature controlled space within the back of the system to store the ink which can be loaded on the fly. Ease of operation in threading a new roll: Usually an operator splices a new roll of paper to the end of the old roll. However, it may happen that the operator needs to re-thread the system. If this is the case, these little buttons that run all the way through the entire system help him very much. The operator simply presses the buttons to support when threading the paper through the system. And finally, the system was designed specifically with these open spaces to allow the operator to manually adjust sensors or thread the system as needed, thus giving the operator the control he needs to maximize productivity. 10 3 Technical Details of the Océ ColorStream 3500 The following pages provide more detail on the topics related to the Océ ColorStream 3500 that may help as additional support for a demonstration 3.1 Paper transport Intra system paper transport: Paper transport (like printing direction) in the system is from right to left. Océ has almost 40 years of experience in offset stability data center-style paper transport technology. The heritage of this high-precision and highly reliable technology has been fully utilized in the Océ ColorStream In contrast to toner based digital printers, the Océ ColorStream 3500 incorporates a 'tight web' paper transport system, in which the paper is held at a certain tension throughout the entire system. The paper tension is operator adjustable to accommodate both paper type and conditioning, enabling a smooth paper throughput and optimal print quality whether you are running cross perforation, sprocket holes or pre-printed stock. The smooth paper transport also results in very little vibration being generated by the printer and remarkably low operating noise. 11 3.2 Print Quality The Océ ColorStream 3500 printheads are arranged in a straight row (KCMY in printing direction). The Océ ColorStream 3500 s exact paper movement allows a nearperfect color-to-color registration that is constant over time and high print volumes Absolutely stable and flat paper transportation The distance between heads and paper must be extremely stable to obtain the best and most consistent print quality. The combination of a controllable web tension, frictionless rollers (1) and a paper path that is slightly arc-formed in the print head area (3) assures that the paper stays extremely flat without any fluttering which could affect the distance gap (2) and hence impair optimal print quality. 11/22 December 2011 Intl. 12 Dust "eaters" and ionizers All Océ inkjet systems have built-in mechanisms to prevent dust particles from reaching the inkjet heads to prevent nozzles failures. These mechanisms enables the system to run paper types that by nature produce some dust (e.g. volume book paper, newspaper, recycled paper, etc). Air Ionizer Sticky roller The first step of paper dust removal is a sticky roller that works like a lint brush. It is positioned directly at the paper infeed of the Océ ColorStream 3500 and collects small paper dust particles. The Océ ColorStream 3500 also incorporates "air ionizers" that electrically charge air molecules thus repelling dust particles in the print heads area. In addition, the air ionizers also charge the paper. With that, ink droplets are fired better to the paper without being scattered around (reducing ink dust that pollutes the interior). This reduces failure jetting and reduces ink "dust" that can pollute the system s interior. The Océ ColorStream 3500 also utilizes only low friction rollers, rather than the commonly used fixed guidance and tension. All these built-in mechanisms work together to achieve unparalleled print quality. Back/front registration The Océ ColorStream 3500 system can consistently achieve outstanding +/- 0.5mm front-back registration, which makes it an excellent complementary to or replacement of an offset device. 13 Paper shrinking compensation Since paper is organic, printing with water based inks has an unavoidable shrinking effect due to the water load and successive drying process. Most notably with duplex printing where one might observe a mismatch of the image size on the front with the back. The extent of shrinkage depends on such variables as the type of paper used and the ink page coverage. In addition, the condition of the paper itself (e.g. humidity) plays an important role. The Océ ColorStream 3500 has the ability to compensate possible shrinking. Depending on the variables, the page-images are downsized to retain a perfect front/back image matching. 3.3 Océ DigiDot inkjet technology The Océ DigiDot technology is based on the Kyocera KJ 4B inkjet heads. Modifications have been made to attain high print quality at higher speed. These lightweight heads (420 grams) are designed to offer long-lasting durability. The Océ ColorStream 3500 system offer single pass printing in a 21.25" actual print width. Unlike competitive systems, the large print width of the ink module itself (4.25 inch) requires fewer modules to print full width. Small ink droplets: low ink consumption only requires low energy for paper drying prevents paper from curling, wrinkling or side-skewing enables printing on a variety of media Kyocera heads allow the firing of extremely small ink droplets. 14 The contrast settings permit printing on a wide range of paper qualities, while obtaining the best possible print quality. For light weight papers or papers with an open structure such as standard wood-free paper, one would typically print with a contrast settings in the range of 7 to 9 to limit the ink load and prevent strike through and media deforming (cockling), whereas for inkjet coated paper a contrast setting of 12 will give a print quality marked by a higher density and high chroma (vivid colors). Contrast setting 7 on standard paper Contrast setting 12 on inkjet coated paper 3.4 Full color Monochrome flexibility The Océ ColorStream 3500 can be set-up (like the JetStream) in either full color or monochrome mode. This enables the customer to efficiently print with only the printheads that his application requires. Full color mode (4 heads activated) Monochrome mode (1 head activated) Head Safe Efficient coexistence of color and monochrome The Océ ColorStream 3500 was designed and developed to simplify existing monochrome continuous feed customers the move towards high volume full color printing with an inkjet system. As it only makes sense to move to inkjet if a long term plan for full color inkjet exists the configurability between 1/0 and 6/6 printing is the flexibility customers expect. When making the step to full color printing it will not be a digital move from 0% full color to 100% full color. It is usually a gradual migration starting with very limited full color volume per month. The majority of the volume will still be monochrome. The gradual migration to 14/22 December 2011 Intl. 15 color usage with a vast majority still being monochrome represents a challenge. With the existing inkjet solutions there is a significant drawback when customers want to migrate to color from monochrome the marking unit is mainly designed for full color printing and hardly supports mixed monochrome and full color application / job structures. Especially the following scenario is a challenge: if a customer prints for several hours in monochrome only and then needs to switch to full col0r it can result in up to one hour manual cleaning to reactivate all nozzles and ensure optimal print quality of all colors. While current solutions can be used as monochrome systems by just printing with the black printhead, the marking unit always puts all inkheads openly over the paper. One could compare it with a writer that wants to write a textbook in black but still opens the pens for cyan, magenta and yellow without protection The problem with that approach: If the customer wants to print in full color, there is a high risk of missing cyan, magenta or yellow nozzles or other print defects. This is caused by the prolonged exposure of non required nozzles to air and paper dust that requires lengthy manual cleaning. It can take up to one hour to reactivate all color nozzles on some competitive systems after a longer period of monochrome only printing. In the Océ ColorStream 3500 we integrated a solution that offers an economic and easy way of printing monochrome and full color applications. We integrated common sense into the Océ ColorStream Like a writer would do, we only open and use the printheads that are needed and literally cap the others. We call that concept the Head Safe. When the Océ ColorStream 3500 is set-up in black only mode for text or monochrome graphic applications, the cyan magenta and yellow heads remain in the conditioned environment of their purging caps. These caps are moved with the not used heads over the paper path and prevent them from drying out or paper dust blocking them. Only the activated black printhead is moved over the paper without the cap and is actively printing. As the heads are capped, they will remain in perfect condition for when they are needed. If a customer wants to switch to the Color mode, the cyan, magenta and yellow heads will release their caps and are available for printing with optimal quality right away. 15/22 December 2011 Intl. 16 The process to switch back to full color will take 3-5 minutes. This time is needed to move the caps and to perform a purge (self cleaning). On competitive systems the same process to switch to full color after longer monochrome printing would either require constant activation of the cyan, magenta and yellow heads or require around 60 minutes of manual cleaning by the operator On the Océ ColorStream 3500 full color printing is possible in full quality very quickly (about 3-5 minutes), even after millions of black only images. Switching between the modes and thus a really smooth migration from monochrome to full color is with this approach possible without lengthy cleaning in minutes not hours like on other, competitive systems. For the switching between CMYK and black/white, the previous print job must completely been finished and the production line completely be stopped. The operator selects the required configuration at the operator panel. The printer deactivates or activates the required head bar units automatically and performs the required purge and wipe actions. 3.5 Multilevel dot modulation The operator can choose the optional Multilevel mode on the GUI where each pixel size can be modulated in real-time in 4 volumes (2-bit), which results in a larger dynamic range, smoother gradations and crisper details. Small droplets are used in light areas, making them less noticeable. The large droplets are used in dark areas to enhance the chroma. In this way, we combine the advantages of small and large droplets, improving smoothness, saturation, dynamic range (amount of steps between light and dark) and subsequently details and sharpness.overall multi level results in a 1200 x 1200 dpi image perception for images and halftones without a decrease in performance. 17 3.6 Productivity Speed Océ ColorStream 3500 offers a speed of 75 meter per minute producing 505 A4 (537 letter size) pages in a single configuration and 1010 A4 (1075 letter size) images in a twin configuration per minute. This permits the production of print volumes of up to 24 million A4/month (in full load 3-shift production) but the high print speed also allows printing high volumes in short time windows as typically seen in Direct Mail and Transactional printing. Up-time and utilization time Thanks to the robust design and field-proven technology, the Océ ColorStream 3500 s expected uptime is more than 90%. In addition, the utilization time, including preventative maintenance and operator's intervention time (such as changing of paper), is expected to be about 80-83%. High up-time and utilization are essential to enable just-in-time delivery and reliable production planning for the most critical of applications. Automated cleaning process The Océ ColorStream 3500 offers an automated cleaning process called purging. During the purging of the inkjet heads, ink is pushed through the nozzles at high pressure. Thus anything that could clog the nozzle is blown out of the printhead ensuring that all nozzles are available and are printing. After the purging, the printheads are automatically cleaned of excess ink through a wiping process. This is comparable to a car s winshield wiper blades. Overall, the process takes about 3 minutes, wastes not more than 0,05 liters for a single unit or 0,1 liters for a twin system and can be performed fully automatically, e.g. when paper rolls are exchanged. Zero fault printing The Océ ColorStream 3500 embraces various means to prevent faulty printing. Data Integrity (DI) Océ ColorStream 3500 printers feature the patented and proven (used in the VarioStream 7000) Océ duplex synchronization and data integrity features which ensure that each front page is matched with the correct back page in a duplex application. The Océ ColorStream 3500 systems print a discrete mark of varying size on the front and back of each page and read those marks back in real time. Any mismatch or sequence error will automatically stop the engine and post an error allowing the operator to verify and reset any potential issues. Each mark can be positioned almost anywhere as the application requires it but must include a print exclusion zone before and after the mark. The Océ Data Integrity function has proved its value in achieving high productivity as no post-printing quality check is obligatory. 17/22 December 2011 Intl. Continuous Feed Marketing Team

18 Print output inspection system While at first sight there appears to be a lot of open space in the Océ ColorStream 3500, the space is merely a preparation for future options. One includes space for an Océ print output inspection system. Apart from Data Integrity, it is important to produce output with a consistent quality. The print output inspection system assures that the end user can rely on the output quality without the need to do visual checks during printing. The pictures below will give the reader a feeling of how small one Pico litre actually is. The diameter size of a match typically measures 2 to 2.2 mm and contains about 10,000,000 droplets of 1 Pico liter! To extract the water from the inks and have the colorant adhere as strongly as possible on the surface of the paper, the Océ ColorStream 3500 uses a varination of the Océ VarioStream fusing technology. The former pre-heating saddles using heating capsules to generate the heat, are used as drying saddles and drive out the water from the paper- The drying unit comprises of two saddles with low energy heating elements and blowers /22 December 2011 Intl. 19 The space left and right of the saddles (1) is required to open the doors (green handles) when feeding the paper manually. The heated saddles are on the inside. The paper is fed over the heated surfaces while hot air is blown onto the paper surface to transport the moist air away from the paper. Independent from paper width and thickness, the drying temperature rarely exceeds a temperature of C. The low temperature drying and low amount of inks per page also makes certain that the paper is not heavily stressed. For further finishing of the paper, neither acclimatization time nor additional investments for de-curling are needed Efficient ink management The Océ ColorStream 3500 uses a central ink supply system. The ink management is integrated in the basic unit and performs the following tasks: De-gassing, heating and pollution particles filtering. From the central unit, the inks flow to intermediate tanks within the printer to allow ink filling while printing. To assure a stable and durable ink temperature, each head module also has a small built-in heater. The combination of local head heaters and the central ink supply system accounts for a shorter system "cold start" time (Océ ColorStream 3500: minutes) High ink yields The Océ ColorStream 3500 Ink containers hold 5 kg of inks, two containers can be put into the system at a time. The examples below show a page-coverage of Black, less than 2 % and CMY less than 11%. The page was printed with a contrast setting of 7. Consequently, one can print more than of these pages without changing a container; with the two containers in the system per color one can print more than images (far more than a night shift). The Black ink containers would still for ¾ full! Power consumption From looking at the total power consumption, one may get the wrong impression that the system s power consumption is high. However, this is relative observation. First of all, in our data sheets we publish the power consumption of a complete configuration, including un- and re-winder and controller. 20 Additional items that can be mentioned: Simplex Duplex flexibility The Océ ColorStream 3500 will offer solutions in twin configurations that can print as two independent simplex systems when required (L- or H- Twin). An Océ ColorStream 3500 Twin can accordingly print 1010 A4 impressions either as 505 A4 pages duplex or as 1010 A4 pages simplex per minute. This offers the customers the most flexible configuration capabilities available in the inkjet market and thus increased simplex productivity and simplex/duplex flexibility. Accordingly, customers can change from toner based systems without the need to change their paper logistics (white roll in printed roll our) direction.
