3 Introduction FLAAR has worked in the world of décor printing all the way back since 1998 (with an Encad NovaJet 36 printer). We focused on fine art giclee printers and fine art photography printers for ten years. By 2008 we moved pretty much into UV-curing printers as our primary focus (along of course with all the workflow: inks, etc). And the entire time we have worked with textile printers (for over 15 years). Textiles are one aspect of décor. Since SGI (Sign Middle East) in Dubai is a signage trade show it was a pleasant surprise to find two entire booths with a major section focused on décor: HP and BARBERAN (ironically both headquartered in Barcelona). The HP booth included many pleasant individuals from UAE and the Middle East. The BARBERAN booth had two individuals from their world headquarters in Spain. For year 2017 our focus at FLAAR Reports will be on Décor: every aspect, textiles, flooring, ceramic tiles, glass, wallpaper, etc. Packaging (Pablo M. Lee of FLAAR Reports is familiar with packaging) textile printers and workflow (Maria Renee Ayau will focus on this) 3D signage Toner printers (office toner and short-run digital presses). Since SGI is the first expo of the year, I was pleasantly surprised to see the décor exhibit occupying about one quarter of the HP booth, accessible from a side aisle. 1

4 The graphic designer of this booth deserves recognition for his or her work. The mounting of it was also well done. For a signage expo in recent years, many signage printer manufacturers try to attract attention to potential clients who may wish to enter the décor printing world. But of all recent years, this HP lounge is one of the best décor aspects I have seen. Agfa also has a décor aspect in their signage trade show booths, usually two stories high, but this year that standard arrangement was not in their booth. So for SGI 2017, the HP booth was the best of show for décor. There will be an upcoming FLAAR Report on what is décor with a list of every single aspect, and which kind of inks are needed for each aspect. Since this new FLAAR Report on décor will take a while to finish, I wanted to start off our year of décor with this introduction, showing the totally professional HP lounge at SGI 2017 in Dubai. 2

5 BARBERAN printers for décor had a booth at SGI 2017 I was pleasantly surprised to see a healthy-sized booth of BARBERAN at SGI This Spanish company offers impressive single-pass printers for flooring and for corrugated cardboard (for packaging). So for the topic of décor, it is their Jetmaster printer series for flooring materials. We at FLAAR would enjoy visiting the BARBERAN headquarters because we have clients who are interested in single-pass printers for décor (and for packaging). We are also doing research on single-pass printers for textiles. Textile printers can of course be outfitted to print for house and office décor (curtains, etc) or for apparel. What you wish to print will help you decide which ink chemistry and which printer structure to focus on. 3

7 Agfa Booth Display about Decor Normally the Agfa booth at other expos has a two-story high display. But for SGI 2017 they fit in a portable room. We like Agfa booths but the reason we put the HP booth on the front cover is because their décor lounge was more open, more visible, and even showed a floor. In fact some people thought the HP lounge floor was really made of wood. Most of the themes of this room decoration are intended to be optical illusions. Several of them use backlighting to increase their appearance. This lampshade is a clever design. 5 The photo of the women at the left is an optical illusion which you can print with a wide-format inkjet printer which has a clear material available to print. The booth of Swissqprint (Signtrade) and dilli had comparable printed lenticular deep depth optical illusion printers.

8 Full Coverage of more aspects of Décor coming all year long Later this year we will be covering décor in full detail, a definite result of my father, grandfather, great-uncle and two brothers who are architects with the same family name. We have a lot on printing for ceramic tiles, glass, etc, but today we are presenting décor as seen at this nice Dubai trade show in the booth of HP (latex ink options) and BARBERAN (several other ink options).
