1 TODAY S OUTCOMES: BEHAVIOR OF LIGHT - Review concepts behind visibility in mirrors and pinhole cameras - Discover what mirror images are and how they are formed by reflections - Predict where mirror images will appear based on the law of reflection

2 Sometimes when you look out the airplane window, you see bright flashes of light from the ground, caused by swimming pools, rivers, and puddles. The places where the flashes occur seem to move along with the airplane. What are the conditions (time of day, direction you are looking) that lead to this effect? For a flash to occur, you must get a direct reflection from the sun off a shiny surface. For you to see this when you look downward, the sun must be high in the sky (in the middle of the day). For you to see this when you look for foward, the sun must be far forward in the sky (in evening or early morning, depending on your direction). In all cases, the light obeys the Law of Reflection.

3 Dorothy wants to be able to see what her bird is up to, while sitting in her favorite chair in another room. So she installed a mirror, as shown at the "-view"diagram at the of the page. She was quite disappointed that this didn't work. A) Explain how the properties of mirrors, walls, and light itself determine what Dorothy can see. The Law of Reflection, the fact that light travels in straight lines, and the fact that light must hit one s eyes to be seen all determine what Dorothy can see. In this case, the reflections off the edges of the mirror define the boundaries of visibility in the mirror. B) Find all the places that she could put the bird cage and be able to see it reflected in the mirror. 4 LAST ACTIVITY: Looking at a mirror on the wall Observers Do the partners have to be the same distance away from the mirror in order to see each other? Give evidence to support your answer: Mirror Mirror Neither of these two situations worked better than the other - all that mattered (as far as visibility goes) was the angle between the two observers at the plane of the mirror - the angle of incidence was equal to the angle of reflection, as shown by the string. Did the amount of the face of the partner seen in the mirror change with distance? (Think about this in today s activity!)

10 There are trade-offs in changing pinhole size and/or screen distance: Small pinhole: Sharp image, but less light Large pinhole: Fuzzy image, but more light Close screen: Small image, but brighter Far screen: Large image, but duller
