3 Dear Readers, Lighting for Tomorrow presents the winners of the 2010 solid-state lighting (SSL) competition. Since 2002, the Lighting for Tomorrow competition has recognized the best designed, energy efficient lighting fixtures. In 2006, Lighting for Tomorrow opened up the competition to new technologies by holding the first SSL competition. The SSL competition identifies fixtures that have successfully integrated light emitting diodes (LEDs) to deliver high quality, white light with application efficiency comparable to standard lighting technologies. The winners of the 2010 SSL competition featured in this brochure were selected by a panel of expert judges based on color appearance, color rendering, amount and distribution of light, overall aesthetic appearance, and application efficiency. All winners either provided photometric reports from a qualified CALiPER laboratory or were tested afterwards by a qualified CALiPER laboratory to verify wattage, total light output, color temperature, color rendering, and power factor. Organizers are pleased to see that the quality of the entries has improved significantly over the last five years as the technology continues to develop at a rapid pace. While the winning products featured in this brochure represent very promising developments in solid state lighting, it is still early in the market development process. We don t yet have significant long-term experience with white LEDs in general illumination applications. 6 the judging panel The 2010 Lighting for Tomorrow judging panel consisted of 10 judges drawn from various areas of the residential lighting industry. The judging panel included a diverse cross-section of experts in lighting technology, lighting sales, energy efficiency, lighting design, and homebuilding. They considered whether the color temperature of the light was appropriate for residential applications. Color rendering Evaluation of this criterion was based on the judging panel s subjective evaluation of the color appearance of objects illuminated by the installed fixture. More points were awarded to entries with better color rendering. Appropriate illuminance Evaluation of this criterion was based on the judging panel s subjective evaluation of the light levels provided by the fixture, in conjunction with measurement of light levels using a standard illuminance meter. The judges participated in a two day judging event held on June 10th and 11th in Davis, CA. The judging event was hosted by the California Lighting Technology Center at their new facility. The judges based their decisions on the minimum requirements and evaluation criteria, detailed below. Application efficiency The judges evaluated whether the fixture delivered appropriate light levels to the task with lower wattage than comparable traditional light sources used for that task. Fixture input watts were verified with a watt meter to help the judges assess the product s efficiency. Aesthetic appearance and style Evaluation of this criterion was based on the judging panel s subjective evaluation of the aesthetic appearance of the installed fixture. The judging panel awarded bonus points for entries exhibiting other desirable characteristics. Bonus points were given for innovation, ability to dim, no off-state power use, and being dark-sky friendly. 6 lighting for tomorrow

7 award summary As demonstrated by the judging criteria, the entries that are showcased in this brochure were selected based on the entrant s ability to integrate LEDs in a fixture that produces high quality white light for the intended application and uses less energy than comparable technologies. 10 winners Design Pro LED Broad Roof LED Path & Spread Light Manufacturer: Kichler Lighting The challenge to the designer was to create a lighting fixture where incandescent lamping was impossible, thereby making solid-state (LED) the only lighting option. This, in-turn reduced the overall girth of the unit, thereby resulting in an elegant sculpture of light. The challenge to the engineering team was to develop a method of electronically powering the LED light source, without affecting the sleek design and also forgoing a unique set of circuitry for each new design. The result is a puck of electronics, located at ground level, from which most any aesthetic design can sprout. The combination of design and science present the first 100% solid-state landscape lighting path light, with no influence from incandescent cousins. 11 winners Design Pro LED Modular and Disc System Manufacturer: Kichler Lighting Kichler s popular Design Pro LED solid state cabinet lighing system is updated technology in response to ever-changing needs. A more energy and cost efficient LED has been applied, dimming capability has been incorporated and Z-Wave home automation compatibility has been included. Physically, the width has been reduced on the modular units while additional accessories have been added for installation and operational ease. Remaining is the warm, powerful, even white light and an ultra-thin ½ profile that takes advantage of the small LED size that disappears under and inside most every cabinet configuration. 12 winners EnduraLED A19 Lamp Manufacturer: Philips Lighting The new dimmable 12 watt EnduraLED A19 lamp is the industry s first LED replacement for a 60 watt incandescent light bulb. Facility Managers and Property Owners will now have an alternative for the most common bulb that delivers the same soft white light and shape they are familiar with. Replacing a standard 60 watt bulb with the EnduraLED A19, which uses just 12 watts of power and delivers an industry benchmark of 806 lumens, could save a business or commercial property up to $120 over the course of the life of the lamp.
