1 MS 46 Cote Collection Abstract This collection is comprised of many Worcester documents from the 18th and 19th Centuries, as well as the 20th Century, including company records and an 1803 Almanac printed by Isaiah Thomas. It includes hundreds of Worcester postcards, some Worcester maps, and various historical objects. Scope and Content The collection spans the years from 1778 to The bulk of materials are from the 1800s and early 1900s. It is organized in the following series: Series I is one folder of materials from a course Jeff Cote took in 1998 at Worcester State College titled "Worcester: The Rise of the City and its People." Series II contains various historical documents related to Worcester. There are three very early items: accounts between Nahum Stone (a tailor) and Dr. Timothy Darling, from 1778 to 1785; Isaiah Thomas's Almanack 1803, and a copy of Thomas's Massachusetts Spy from March Stored separately is a copy of Thomas' Massachusetts Spy, Series II also contains City of Worcester documents, bank records, high school memorabilia, and booklets and programs from various Worcester events. There are also newspapers from Commerce High School in the 1930s, a newspaper supplement featuring Worcester, and a Massachusetts Spy from Series III is comprised of company records, including reports, correspondence, advertisements and bills, dating from 1847 to about the 1950s. Two groups of records of particular note are documents of the Richardson Manufacturing Company, for whom Theo Brown, WPI Class of 1901, worked before joining John Deere Company; and cards by Whitney Card Company, which specialized in Valentines. Series IV is made up of various Worcester society and institution records, Series V contains various documents of the Royal Worcester Corset Company, from 1883 to Most of the materials are advertisements for corsets. Also included are a diploma, postcards of the company and its workers, and booklets featuring corsets. Series VI contains Worcester photographs and postcards from the late 1800s to about the mid-1900s. This series includes souvenir books, stereograph cards, and portrait photographs of unidentified people. There is one document case filled with Worcester postcards. Series VII contains maps of Worcester. Series VIII is made up of Worcester artifacts, including trolley tokens, commemorative plates, razors in cases, a medal and a pin, and a gun made in 1860 by L.W. Pond for Smith & Wesson.
