Menicon Z for Large-Diameter Lenses and More Menicon Z is now available in a large-diameter buttons (17.0 mm) for scleral and semiscleral lens designs up to 16.5 mm. Practitioners can now prescribe the world s most permeable contact lens material for challenging cases, including keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, post penetrating keratoplasty, post radial keratotomy and post LASIK surgery. Oxygen transmission is a basic physiologic necessity, and Menicon Z is an important addition to the range of materials used for large diameter lenses. Large-diameter scleral and semi-scleral lenses are the fastest growing sector in the GP lens marketplace. Although these lenses are most often prescribed for irregular corneas, many practitioners also use them to correct astigmatism and presbyopia in patients with regular corneas. 12 LAGADO MATERIALS: MEETING THE DEMAND FOR SPECIALTY LARGE DIAMETER AND SCLERAL LENS DESIGNS The properties of the TYRO material and its availability in diameters up to 25mm, make it a leading option for large diameter and corneo-scleral lens designs. The management of irregular corneal conditions (in non-diseased eyes) including keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, post-penetrating keratoplasty, post-radial keratotomy and post-lasik surgery very often requires a large diameter GP material to help maximize visual acuity while ensuring optimum eye health. To address that need, Lagado offers TYRO (Dk 97) and ONSI (Dk 56) in a variety of large diameter blanks. Lagado large diameter producs are now available as an Enhanced Shouldered Blank. With a back surface precut and a radiused front surface shoulder, the Lagado ESB can help reduce cycle times during lathing by as much as 40 seconds a lens. Simply shouldering the button only removes 13% of the material the ESB form removes more than twice as much, up to a 40% reduction in volume, leading to a significant reduction in relapping costs. 13 Our annualized growth rate for large diameter buttons since 2006 is 50%. It is the single largest growth category we have seen in GP lenses (Contact Lens Spectrum, Oct., 2012) A survey queried 52 members of the GPLI advisory board on 6 contact lens modalities used in the management of irregular cornea. Participants were asked which modality was used when fitting their last 100 irregular cornea patients, The results showed that the highest percentage, 43.74%, had a preference for fitting scleral lenses.
