LED BRIGHT LIGHT THERAPY THE BASICS OF BRIGHT LIGHT THERAPY The amount of light is measured in lux, the international unit of illuminance. One lux corresponds to the volume of light produced by one candle measured one metre away. On a normal summer s day, the volume of sunlight is around lux, whereas the illuminance produced by normal indoor lighting is lux. This is a thousand times less than the volume of natural light on an average summer day. An illuminance range of lux has been proven to produce benefits similar to sunlight. A bright light device efficiently compensates for the lack of natural light in the dark season. All Innolux bright light devices can be used to produce a safe and efficient illuminance of lux. At this level (4 000 K) the light is pure white. The duration of the effects of bright light therapy varies depending on one s sensitivity to light. BRIGHT LIGHT THERAPY IS A SAFE AND EASY METHOD TO RELIEVE PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE CIRCADIAN RHYTHM S.A.D. AND WINTER BLUES Origo Sunlight is life s most basic requirement. There would be no life without sunlight, and it gives us all vitality and energy. Naturally, the volume of light is the highest in summer. As the amount of light drops through autumn and winter, many people start feeling tired and lethargic. In addition to sleep disorders, the lack of sunlight can make some eat more than usual, while others can even become depressed. With bright light therapy, more and more people are beating the winter blues. Bright light devices help keep the circadian and other biological rhythms stable. It helps people with waking problems, and helps everyone stay alert during the day. In an office setting, a bright light device ensures a good start to the morning. It is also an excellent working light when dimmed. Shift workers have also discovered the benefits of bright light therapy in balancing their irregular circadian rhythm. Correctly timed bright light therapy can also significantly speed up recovery from jet lag. Winter blues symptoms start in October and last until March. They re caused by the body s efforts to adjust to the changing living conditions, shorter days, and lower volumes of sunlight. The phenomenon is known as winter depression or SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). The less severe form of SAD is subclinical SAD or winter blues. This is also much more common. Bright light therapy has been scientifically proven to relieve the symptoms of SAD and winter blues. 4 1 Bright light therapy is easy: Connect the bright light device to the mains. Turn on the lamp. WHAT IS BRIGHT LIGHT? Not all lights are suited for bright light therapy, as the minimum illumination requirement for a bright light device is lux. An illuminance range of lux has been proven to produce benefits similar to sunlight. All Innolux bright light devices can be used to produce a safe and efficient illuminance of lux. At this level (4 000 K) the light is pure white. DAILY THERAPY The recommendation is to start with two hours of bright light therapy a day. The daily duration of the therapy can later be shortened to half an hour a day. The therapy is most efficient in the morning between 6 and 10. In the evening, bright light therapy can cause difficulties falling asleep, and so it is not recommended after 6 pm. Anything from at least thirty minutes a day can produce benefits. Bright light therapy works best when used daily for the first two weeks. After this, bright light therapy should be continued five times a week throughout the winter. The benefit of the therapy can usually be seen within a week: the user will feel as lively and energetic as in the summer. 2 Eat breakfast, read the paper, watch TV...
