Always test your combination of JT5000 products, inks and laminating films prior to commercial use. 1) Printing Conditions: Print in a conditioned press room at + 73 F (23 C) and 50% RH. 2) Laminating Conditions: Ensure print is perfectly dry. Material should have hour drying time prior to lamination or transportation. 3) Transportation Conditions: To allow for easy transportation, IMAGin JT5000 series can be rolled up, with the image out, with a minimum diameter of six inches (15cm). When the image is not protected by an overlaminate, make sure the print is completely dry and protected in a plastic bag. 39 Thermal Overlaminates Thermacolor Tips: The suggested laminating temperature is approximately 190 F (88 C) for 3-mil, 200 F (94 C) for 5-mil and 210 F (99 C) for 10-mil PERMACOLOR at a throughput speed of 3-5 ft./minute. The temperature and/or speed may need to be adjusted depending on the specific laminating equipment, thickness of the PERMACOLOR and desired throughput speed. To increase production speed, temperature increases of F (5-10 C) may permit operating at 10 ft./minute. Be advised that a high temperature along with a slow running speed could cause blistering or waviness in the final laminated image. To correct this problem, try reducing the temperature or increasing the speed. In addition, a low temperature and a high running speed could result in incomplete bonding and poor adhesive wet-out (sometimes referred to as silvering ). To correct this problem, use adequate laminating pressure, raise the temperature slightly or slow the running speed. 72 MACtac Graphic Products p: f: Resource Library: Digital Printing Digital Printing 101 In the world of digital ink jet printing, there are many variables to achieving quality output. These different variables can extremely affect the way printers function and inks lay onto media. Below are basic recommendations for achieving optimal print quality on MACtac JT5000 digital print media. Environment Print room must be a clean, well ventilated, temperature and humidity controlled room. It should be in an enclosed area away from high traffic, warehouse, etc. This will keep the printer and print heads clear of debris; and also dust and dirt off of the media before and after printing. Gloves are recommended for handling the media as to keep fingerprints and oil from your hands off of the printed surface. Recommended relative humidity: 40-60% Recommended temperature: degrees F All rolls of media should be stored in the room for 48 hours to acclimate to the environment. Static Having a controlled room also helps control static. Static can really affect ink lay down and attract dust and dirt towards the media and printing area. Do not place carpet or rugs in the printing area that would attract static. Static also thrives in low humidity environments. Static string is a relatively inexpensive way to help control static. You can find it at Apply the string to a metal piece of the printer (good to loosen a screw and tighten back). Then run across the web width of the media one inch away. Again, apply other end of string to a metal piece of the printer and ground to the floor. Grounding to something away from the printer is important (Even though your printer is ground, but only for the electrical part). Media Profiles Using the proper profiles is the key to optimal printing. This includes proper heat settings, ink restrictions, linearization, total ink limits and icc profile. Without these correct profiles, the media will not print properly! Profiles will control output, increase production time and reduce ink usage. Visit to download the correct profile for your printer. There are over 500 profiles online for all the major printers and RIP software. A read me file is also attached with instructions on how to download and import into your RIP software. Printer Maintenance Follow all printer manufacturers guidelines for printer maintenance. Proper maintenance will ensure correct calibration and increase the life of the printer, print heads and mechanical parts. Dry Time You must let printed graphics dry properly. Dry to the touch does not mean that the printed graphics are completely dry or cured. The graphics must be accessible to the air to drive the solvents off of the media. Printing directly onto a take up roll and putting in the corner is not drying. There must be air flow to push the solvents off the media! We recommend hours dry time before any type of finishing (overlaminate, clearcoat). Without the recommended dry time, solvents are trapped and migrate into the film causing it to soften and stretch improperly. These solvents will also migrate into and deaden the adhesive. We cannot stress enough the importance of drying the graphics properly. Follow these recommendations to control these variables in your printing process and you will be on your way to better controlled output, happier customers and an increased bottom line. 72

Storage of MACmark Vinyl Films MACmark cut vinyl marking films have a two year shelf-life when the product is properly stored. MACmark films should be stored at temperatures between F (15-25 C) and a relative humidity of 40 to 60%. MACmark films should not be directly exposed to high temperatures (near radiators, in direct sunlight, etc.). MACmark vinyl rolls should be kept upright or hung on racks. At no time should they be placed on their sides as this could lead to a large matte section appearing throughout the entire roll. Cutting MACmark Vinyl Films 1) Use a knife with a sharp blade. a. Blunt or worn knives will result in untidy cuts ( jagged edging ). b. Applying too much pressure when using a blunt knife could result in the knife bouncing off the backing paper, which means that the adhesive will not be cut all the way through. 2) Cut to the correct depth. The knife should cut all the way through the vinyl and the adhesive. a. If the cut is not deep enough (the vinyl and/or if the adhesive is not cut all the way through), the letters and logos that you have cut out could be pulled away during stripping. b. If the cuts are too deep, then the backing could split when the letters or logos are being transferred onto the application tape. Weeding MACmark Vinyl Films MACtac recommends weeding as soon as the shapes have been cut out. This is because the thickness of the adhesive layer could result in it resealing itself if the vinyl is left for several hours before wedding, or if it has been exposed to temperatures above 78 F (25 C). For best weeding results, use a peeling angle of approximately 30 and pull at a steady speed. Applying Application Tape The application tape should be laminated using a laminator. If this is not possible, then apply the application tape on a flat, stable surface with a stiff plastic squeegee, working outward from the center of the graphic. If there are any air bubbles trapped between the tape and the vinyl, prick them using a needle. Surface Preparation If the adhesive does not have full contact with a clean dry surface, it will not stick and will result in premature failure of the graphic. Even if the surface appears clean, all surfaces should be cleaned using: 1) Soapy water, then rinse with clean water (do not leave any trace of soap on the surface). 2) Clean away any petrochemical contaminates (tar, oil, grease) using a good automotive cleaner or wax remover. 3) Wipe down the surface with isopropyl alcohol. Dry the surface using a clean, lint free, dry cloth or paper towel, before the isopropyl alcohol has had a chance to evaporate. 73

74 MACtac Graphic Products Resource Library: Cut Vinyl p: f: Applying MACmark Vinyl Films to the Substrate 1) A wet or dry application method can be used. a. Dry is the most reliable method. b. When doing the wet method, use a professional application fluid instead of soap and water. 2) Heat should be used when applying graphics over rivets, curves and corrugations. Finishing your MACmark Graphic 1) Seams will hold moisture and flex resulting in a pre-mature failure of the graphic. a. Slit seams the entire length of the substrate. b. Do not caulk the seam of the graphic or it will not adhere. c. Cut and remove this section of the graphic. 2) Edge sealing is required whenever the graphic is will be exposed to liquids that can attack the adhesive. a. Use a brush and edge sealing varnish, brush along the edge in a smooth, continuous motion. Make sure the entire edge is sealed. 3) Clean the graphics. a. Use a wet non-abrasive type cleaner, similar to those used for painted graphics. If you use a strong acid, alkaline or solvent cleaner, you will damage your graphic. Removing MACmark Vinyl 1) Heat the vinyl to a temperature of F (70-80 C) using a heat gun or hot air blower (air temperature of +/- 575 F or 300 C). 2) Peel off the MACmark in small pieces (approximately 8 x 10 ). 3) Use an approved vinyl removal fluid. 4) Adhesive residue can be removed using a towel soaked in isopropyl alcohol or adhesive remover. Storage of IMAGin Digital Media and Permacolor Laminating Films IMAGin Digital Media has a two year shelf life from the date of manufacture when stored at 60/77 F (15/25 C) and 50% relative humidity in the original packaging. Permacolor Laminating Films have a two year shelf-life from D.O.M when stored at 75 F (24 C) and 50% relative humidity or less. MACtac recommends the rolls be stored vertical on end or suspended from the core. General Recommendations for Permacolor Laminating Films If laminated image will be exposed to moisture, chemicals, solvents or if high pressure washing is anticipated, MACtac recommends sealing the edges with varnish, silicone or other sealant to prevent penetration by liquids. Overlaminates should not be applied onto dusty or dirty prints. The mounting board must be properly prepared prior to mounting the image. This may include wiping with alcohol, light sanding or surface sealing depending on the board. Contact your board supplier for a list of their recommendations. Permacolor mounting films are intended for cold roll lamination ( F). The addition of heat while simultaneously laminating with thermal lamination film may result in curl or have other detrimental effects on the finished product. Whenever possible, always test first to ensure end-use capability. 1) Laminating Conditions: a. Allow print to dry completely. Optimal drying time is 24 hours prior to lamination or transportation. If 24 hours is not possible, allow a minimum drying time of four hours. b. Lamination of IMAGin is required for JT1000 water-based images and is recommended for JT5000 solvent-based images. Lamination helps protect the image from contaminates, scratches and moisture. Lamination will prolong the life of the inks and the vinyl. Lamination will also enhance the appearance of the image to please the eye. Note: lamination does increase thickness of finished image and does reduce conformability to complex surfaces. 2) Transportation Conditions: a. IMAGin Digital Media can be rolled up with the image out, with a minimum diameter of six inches (15cm). When an overlaminate does not protect the image, make sure the print is completely dry and is protected in a plastic bag. Select an appropriate application surface: Standard tile floors Smooth, sealed concrete Sealed hardwood floors Not recommended for soft surfaces, such as carpet or rubber mats. 2. Clean application surface: Clean surface with commercial floor cleaner. Clean surface again with isopropyl alcohol to remove grease and residual cleaner solution. Pre-position graphic to application surface; this ensures proper placement. 3. Apply graphic to surface: Remove one edge of the liner from the graphic and, when carefully positioned, apply onto the floor. Using a squeegee, work from the center of the graphic out with firm, even pressure. Remove the remaining liner and use the squeegee to apply the remainder of the graphic to the floor with short, overlapping strokes, again from the center out. Avoid trapping air bubbles between the graphic and the floor. Re-burnish all edges to ensure good contact with the floor. Seal the graphic. Allow graphic to set for 8-12 hours before waxing, scrubbing or polishing the floor. After that, the floor graphic should be waxed to seal the edges and protect the graphic. (Be sure to choose a floor finish that meets or exceeds the industry standard of 0.5 Static Coefficient of Friction value using the ASTM D2047 test procedure.)
