The A4 laser printer MFP demonstrated perfect reliability and provides print quality crisp text, consistent line art, full greyscale range, dark solids ideal for business. The bizhub 4750 is easy to use from the desktop and at the device: Konica Minolta s My Tab allows users to customize a tab in the drivers to simplify job programming, while making selections for walk-up activity is a breeze on the Konica Minolta INFO-Palette control panel, which has tablet-style navigation. On the features front, Konica Minolta best architecture lets the unit integrate with a range of solutions that can help organisations save time and money; the Konica Minolta PageScope Mobile app allows users to output files from smartphones and tablets; and via an i-option kit that will be available in Q4 2014, the bizhub 4750 supports the Konica Minolta bizhub MarketPlace, which has many downloadable apps and connectors to streamline workflows. Other noteworthy items include a high RAM capacity, a standard 320-GB hard drive and compatibility with the flexible and robust Konica Minolta PageScope Net Care Device Manager (for management of a mixed fleet of hardware). Most importantly, BLI s 36-month lifecycle analysis shows a lower than average total cost of ownership for environments printing up to 20,000 pages per month. And though users are blocked from using the control panel to program a scan job while a copy job is running, scan jobs can be programmed ahead when a print job or another scan job is running. Copy jobs can be reserved to memory capacity. No button needs to be pressed; users simply drop the document into the feeder and can then program features and begin scanning. A job stops running automatically once the interrupt button is pressed, not when the current set has been completed. Users have access to typical features quantity, duplex, sort and the document feeder when programming the interrupt job. The interrupted job auto-starts after two minutes; alternatively, users can press the Start button for the job to immediately begin running again. Output is processed on a first-in, first-out basis. Jobs can t be moved once in queue, nor can priority mode be changed. ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES VERY GOOD The unit is compatible with Konica Minolta bizhub vcare so service providers can automate meter read collection and receive diagnostic alerts. BLI evaluated the software for a Solutions Test Report and found that it offers competitive features and functionality compared with other OEM-developed MPS tools. 3 BuyersLab.com

4 PageScope Net Care Device Manager enables administrators to manage a fleet of mixed hardware. Data provided for non-konica Minolta devices is manufacturer-dependent, which is common. BLI evaluated the utility for a Solutions Test Report and determined that it s impressive overall, ambitious in scope and on par with other outstanding fleet management utilities. Organisations can choose to purchase four add-ons for the fleet management utility, thus forming PageScope Enterprise Suite: Account Manager, which helps with meter reads and tracks output by user and department; Authentication Manager, which provides secure password-protected logins with multiple methods of authentication and lets administrators limit or restrict colour usage; and MyPrint Manager, which delivers secure pull printing. Businesses can get a free 60-day trial of PageScope Enterprise Suite, after which licences for the optional components must be purchased. The embedded web server offers simple navigation and allows administrators to, among many other things, change device settings and some security protocols, view the queue and the job history, run reports and manage the address book. A host of other utilities are compatible with the unit, including Konica Minolta Page- Scope Data Administrator, which auto-locates devices and allows administrators to manually update authentication settings and one-touch destinations such as , FTP and SMB, on every bizhub on the network. FEEDBACK TO WORKSTATIONS VERY GOOD The bundled feedback utility provides preprogrammed alerts for warnings and error conditions such as when toner is depleted or that a cover or door is open. The unit can also be set to beep when, for instance, a misfeed has occurred. While the icon on the taskbar doesn t change colour, status messages in the embedded web server and fleet management utility do, making it easy to see what s going on with the unit. Print job completion notification popups, which include status updates and a link to help troubleshoot the unit, are available. (U.S. model pictured) 4 BuyersLab.com

5 Users can proactively access the embedded web server (via IP address or the Printer Information link in the drivers) to view device status. Remaining life of the toner cartridge, imaging unit and maintenance kit are presented via gauges with accompanying numbers (in 1% increments), while paper levels are indicated with text only (Ready, Empty); users can also see the status of the output tray, as well as how much hard drive space is free. PageScope Net Care Device Manager provides similar status updates. Via the embedded web server or the fleet management utility, administrators can establish alerts for several conditions, for instance, when the fuser to be replaced, to be sent to designated personnel. EASE OF NETWORK SETUP VERY GOOD Physical setup is straightforward as the main body of the unit comes preassembled (no optional paper sources were tested). Due to size and weight concerns, Konica Minolta recommends at least two people lift the unit out of the box and place it in the desired location. Packaging materials aren t excessive. A starter toner cartridge (rated yield, 7,500 pages) and the imaging unit are preinstalled; users must remove the protective seal from both and can then reinsert them. The disc launches when inserted in the drive, the IP address is assigned and the port is created, all automatically; the unit will detect optional accessories (none tested). Via the default routine, while it takes a competitive nine clicks to install the PCL, PostScript, XPS and fax drivers, along with the feedback utility, and another six clicks to install the scan driver, users will still be up and running in minutes. The Konica Minolta Driver Packaging Utility allows for the drivers to be simultaneously installed on multiple workstations. Alternatively, administrators can do so via PageScope Net Care Device Manager. One-to-one and one-to-many cloning are achieved through the embedded web server and fleet management utility, respectively; this function can only be done with devices in the same family, which is common. The first CD also contains a link that takes administrators to a page on the manufacturer s website where PageScope Net Care Device Manager, the full suite of other utilities and the Konica Minolta Universal Print Driver can be downloaded. All utilities must be installed individually. The second disc contains a host of user guides that cover a range of topics. PRINT DRIVERS VERY GOOD The unit comes with PCL 5e/6, PostScript 3 and XPS drivers that are compatible with various Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as environments running Linux. 5 BuyersLab.com

7 The PCL and PostScript drivers share a similar appearance (the latter adds an Advanced tab), boosting ease of use in environments where users work with both. Quantity, orientation, and paper size are on the Basic tab, while duplex and finishing are on the Layout and Finish tabs, respectively. Graphical changes in the drivers show when features such as duplex have been chosen; users are given two ways Paper (above) and Printer to view the selections. (U.S. model pictured) On the Quality tab, users can make selections to match a certain type of document or to enable toner-save mode, which can extend the life of the cartridge and, in turn, lower TCO. By clicking the Quality Adjustment button, users can change brightness and contrast. (U.S. model pictured) Users can access the help function on every tab save for Advanced in the PostScript driver. 8 The UPD, which won a BLI Outstanding Achievement award in Summer 2011, streamlines deployment as only one driver needs to be installed across the network. A noteworthy feature is that the information included in the discovery window tells users what devices are compatible with it. SCAN FUNCTIONS GOOD Users can scan in full-colour, auto-colour, black or greyscale to , the hard drive, WebDAV or, via FTP or SMB, network folders, at various true resolutions from 200 to 600 dpi. Supported file formats include JPEG, PDF (regular, compact, encrypted) and PDF/A, TIFF and XPS. TWAIN scanning is also supported. Scan to USB is standard; note that it s disabled by default and therefore must be turned on. The port is located to the right directly below the display. 9 files and create folders on the display, but these are advanced functions that aren t seen on many competitive devices. Capturing and sending files to is simple, thanks to LDAP support. Entering addresses on the fly is also easy using the onscreen keypad, which has medium-size keys that are responsive. Scanning documents to network folders is equally as straightforward. Like most competitive devices, the bizhub 4750 lacks a scan preview. Simplex scan speeds in full-colour, auto-colour and black modes are among the fastest compared with A4 monochrome laser/led printer MFPs in this class tested to date. Black scan speed for double-sided documents is competitive. However, colour scan speeds in duplex mode are slower than average. Compression of scanned colour files worked well during testing, reducing file size to one that s lower than the average of the group. Scanned black files are auto-compressed by default. No overspray was noticed around text and line art. Greyscale was visible over the full range, with distinct separation between all levels; halftone coverage was smooth and had minimal banding. PRINT PRODUCTIVITY GOOD First-print time from overnight sleep is competitive compared with A4 monochrome laser/led printer MFPs in this class tested to date (note that the administrative setting Power Consumption in Sleep Mode must be enabled, otherwise a walk-up user has to wake up the unit before a page will print from sleep mode). From ready mode, first-print times for the Word and PDF test files are competitive, as are running speeds when printing simplex sets and BLI s job stream, which simulates typical traffic in a busy workgroup. However, running speed when printing duplex sets is slower than average, and so is the first-print time for the PowerPoint file. First-Page Time from Overnight Sleep Konica Minolta bizhub Device sits idle overnight; a single-page black Word document is sent to the device; first-print time in seconds indicates the time it took to warm up, process, image, and deliver a single-page test document to the output tray. BLI obtains the overall efficiency for each mode by averaging the efficiency ratings (derived by dividing the tested speed of the device by the rated speed and then multiplying by 100) for each run length (1, 5, 10 and 20 sets). The unit s efficiency was tested using the PCL driver. Job Stream SPEED IN PPM PERCENT OF RATED SPEED PCL BLI s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totalling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the device as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device. COPY PRODUCTIVITY GOOD First-copy times from the platen and document feeder are competitive compared with A4 monochrome laser/led printer MFPs in this class tested to date. Running speed when copying sets in 1:1 mode is faster than average. However, running speeds when copying sets in 1:2 and 2:2 modes are among the slowest. 14 EASE OF USE VERY GOOD The control panel has some hard keys and a similar touchscreen to the version that s currently on Konica Minolta A3 MFPs, making life easy in environments where a mix of printer- and copier-based devices is deployed. The control panel can be angled up or down (so that it sits flush with the unit). (U.S. model pictured) The LCD offers touch-and-swipe scrolling for quicker navigation of the logically organised menu selections. BLI technicians found the Help function very nice, as it pulls up information on the setting that s currently selected. Precise percent gauges on the status of the cartridge, imaging unit and the maintenance kit can be viewed in two keystrokes (Utility > Check Consumable Life). Adjusting the drawer for different-size media is straightforward: the length guide slides and the width guides move in sync, once the blue tabs have been pressed. To accommodate larger-size paper, users must unlock the mechanism at the back of the drawer and then push out the back of the drawer itself. Loading media is equally as easy, as there are no spring-loaded ramps, corner separators or anything else to make the process difficult. Typical of devices in this class, users must confirm the size on the display. Clearing a misfeed from the document feeder and the one location in front is simple, but if the jam has occurred in the rear and the unit is positioned against a wall, it could be cumbersome for some users to turn it around. And while misfeeds can be accessed through the front cover, consumables then need to be removed and the imaging unit is exposed, making it susceptible to damage. Finally, users receive only a graphical depiction of the unit with an arrow pointing to where the jam is located, whereas some competitive devices provide more guidance. 14 BuyersLab.com

15 Replacing consumables is clean: users simply open the front cover by pressing the button on the right side of the unit and can then pull out the spent cartridge or imaging unit (nothing needs to be unlocked). No instructions are provided on the display or the inside of the cover to provide help, but illustrations on the packing should be all that s required. (U.S. model pictured) Compared with competitive devices tested to date, users will have to replace supplies an average number of times. Projected 36-Month User Interventions (Over 18,000 impressions) Tested Model 9 Competitive Average User interventions are calculated based on BLI s average tested toner yields (using the ISO test target, printed in a semi-continuous mode), as well as the manufacturer s rated yields for other consumables (drums, developer units, waste containers, etc.). BLI calculates the total number of supplies and maintenance parts that would be required to output 180,000 pages (assumes 5,000 pages per month, which is an average volume for this class of device, over three years). Each individual cartridge or other consumable is counted as one intervention. Long-life maintenance parts, such as fuser kits and rollers, and paper supply replenishments, aren t included in BLI s calculations. Depicted scenario is for illustrative purposes only. 16 FEATURE SET VERY GOOD Built on best architecture, the unit integrates with software developed by Konica Minolta or third parties to boost productivity and help save money, or tighten security, among other things. Downloadable for free from the Apple and Google Play stores, the Konica Minolta Page- Scope Mobile app lets users print from ios and Android smartphones and tablets, as well as view scanned files from bizhub MFPs. The app supports a range of file formats, provides the ability to change multiple settings prior to output and earned a rating of 5-out-of-5 Stars for its Solutions Test Report. And the manufacturer will make available support for Apple AirPrint in Q Once the web browser i-option kit is purchased (available in Q4 2014), the unit supports the Konica Minolta bizhub MarketPlace, which has a variety of apps (corporate announcements, weather, connect to Twitter, order recycling supplies, paper templates) and a number of connectors to popular systems (Microsoft SharePoint, Hyland OnBase, Google, Box, Dropbox, Evernote). There are currently 22 offerings, half of which are free; a new one is released every month. The unit supports an HID proximity card reader, along with one for iclass cards. Print from USB is standard. The unit auto-discovers the drive; users must click two buttons to get to the screen where they can print files. Supported formats include PDF, JPEG, TIFF, XPS, DOC, XLS and PPT. Users can change quantity, duplex and collate but can t choose to output multiple files simultaneously. Users can build jobs thanks to the separate scan function in scan (to storage) and copy (to output) modes. Pages can be captured from the document feeder or platen, but the same size media must be used in all batches, and the only setting that can be changed are simplex/duplex (for scan and copy) and zoom (only for copy). Via the embedded web server, users can do direct printing of PDFs but can t change any settings, which is typically the case with this function. The unit offers standard network and local printing and scanning, as well as copy functionality, while Internet, PC and walk-up faxing is optional; no PC fax is available. Non-upgradeable RAM capacity of 2 GB is among the highest compared with A4 monochrome laser/led printer MFPs in this class. The unit also includes a standard 320-GB hard drive. While standard paper capacity of 650 sheets is below average, maximum capacity of 2,300 sheets is competitive, as is the 100-sheet bypass. Media-weight accommodation of up to 120 and 163 gsm through the drawers and bypass, respectively, is competitive. And like every device in the competitive group, the unit has standard automatic duplexing. The standard RADF has a below average capacity of 50 sheets. 16 BuyersLab.com

About half the group offers an optional finisher; the bizhub 4750 s is of the internal variety and can left-corner staple up to 20 sheets (some competitive finishers can staple up to 50 sheets). A convenience stapler that can staple up to 20 sheets is also available. 21 SUPPORTING TEST DATA Test Environment: This product was tested in BLI s 929-square-metre U.S. test lab, in an environment monitored by an Extech RH S20 Digital RH/Temperature Recorder and Honeywell Model 61 Seven-Day Temperature/Relative Humidity Chart Recorder. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from impacting equipment under test.
