Tappan Gregory ( ) were brothers who possessed a love and desire to study nature. Stephen was born on May 20, 1888, in Chicago, Illinois. He received his A.B. from Yale University in 1911 and then received his M.E. from the University of Wisconsin in He worked as a professional investment advisor, forming and then becoming president of the firm of Gregory, De Long and Holt, Inc. His interest in ornithology began early, with notes on bird migration, and continued with him throughout his lifetime. He began his study collection 1919, when he shot his first bird, a Clapper Rail, in Mississippi. From then on he developed his own collection as he could and purchased specimens, or entire collections, from other collectors, notably Ruthven Deane, Benjamin T. Gault, and Charles D. Klotz. His entire collection numbered 4,000 birds at his death. His wife donated most of the collection to the Chicago Academy of Sciences, but 240 of the skins from Michigan, primarily the Huron Mountain region, were donated to the Museum of Zoology of the University of Michigan. He was also extremely active in various scientific organizations. He had a long-standing relationship with the American Ornithological Union (AOU), which started in He used his business interests to serve the organization, serving on various financial committees from He was a founding member of the Kennicott Club at the Chicago Academy of Sciences which, with his brother Tappan. Other organizations with which he was associated are the Chicago Ornithological Society, The Illinois Audubon Society, the Wilson Ornithological Society, the Cooper Ornithological Society, and the American Society of Mammalogists. Tappan Gregory, like his brother Stephen, was devoted to natural studies, but professionally followed in his father s footsteps and became a lawyer. He received his A.B. from Yale University in 1910 and his L.L.B from Northwestern University in He practiced law in the firm of Bayley, Webster, Gregory, and Hunter which later became Gregory, Gilruth, and Hunter. He was the president of the Chicago Bar Association from , the Illinois State Bar Association from , and the American Bar Association from He only stopped practicing law during World War I. From he served in the army as a 1 st Lieutenant in the 313 th Field Artillery in the American Expeditionary Forces. In addition to his work in the law, Tappan was a successful mammalogist and nature photographer. He blended his love of photography with his mammal research and was one of the first photographers to use self-portrait flash photography to capture the movement of animals in the wild. Like his brother he developed his own mammal skin collection which he donated to the Chicago Academy of Sciences in 1961 upon his death. Among his numerous publications are: Deer at Night in the North Woods 1930, Mammals of the Chicago Region, Program of Activities of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, Vol. 7, Nos. 2-3, July 1936, Eyes in the Night 1939, Lion in the Carmens, The Chicago Naturalist, Vol. 1, No. 3, 1938, and numerous articles on mammalogy and photography in various journals and magazines. Utilizing his photographic expertise he even served as an observer and photographer at the Nuremberg Trials in He was a member of numerous organizations outside of those related to his work as a lawyer. With his brother Stephen, he was a founding member of the Kennicott Club at the Chicago Academy of Sciences. He also served as a Scientific Governor and Honorary Curator of CAS/PNNM Finding Aid, Gregory Brothers Papers, updated 3/15/2015 2
