2 WELCOME Everything seems so temporary these days. The rise of information sharing on social media has fed our desire for instant gratification and we ve seen the demise of process and product. Instagram, Pinterest and Flickr, among others, are wonderful platforms for communication and allow images to be shared and enjoyed by a wide and diverse audience. We wonder, however, can social media ever do the image justice? Consider the photographer planning his shot for days, maybe weeks in advance. Carefully selecting the equipment needed to capture the perfect moment and then waiting for that instant when all the elements come together for the image to be captured. This process could have taken hours to prepare and then execute. In an instant, that image could be seen on a smart phone thousands of miles away by thousands of people. And what do they do with it? Enjoy it for a fleeting moment and then swipe or scroll to the next one. Whilst it might be more difficult to get an audience of a similar size to see a print, there is no substitute to the physical appreciation of the hard work the artist has invested in crafting his image. You can t smell pixels. You can t pick them up and rub them between your fingers to appreciate the texture that adds an extra dimension to the image printed on it. And you can t replicate the capacity of a large scale printed image to completely dominate the area around it and envelope the viewer. Certainly the advances in digital technology has removed some of the barriers for people to get involved in photography, but for us, printing is still a hugely important tool in the photographer s work-flow to create an emotional response from their work. This year we ll be doing everything we can to encourage you to print your images. Don t leave your images as a collection of pixels and instead embrace print making as part of your craft and realise your images as something physical. Free your images from digital storage and allow other people to enjoy and appreciate your hard work and creativity by printing an image that will make people stop and look rather than swipe past it on their phone. 4 +44 (0) Thoresby, the end of the mine An exhibition by Chris Upton, sponsored by Fotospeed It was a chance conversation after a camera club lecture I had given that led to the opportunity to photograph Thoresby Colliery, the last pit in Nottinghamshire, and the start of an amazing twelve month photographic project. Initially I thought I would be allowed to visit a couple of times and that would be it. I never envisaged that the project might develop in the way it did with a series of exhibitions, a book and extensive media coverage. Thoresby s closure in July 2015 brought to an end hundreds of years of mining in the county. It was such a significant part of our industrial and social heritage I felt a real sense of responsibility to do my best to capture the spirit of the colliery and create an enduring record for posterity. As a Travel and Landscape photographer, Social Documentary was a new departure for me and there were a number of decisions to take early on, not least how to present the images. I decided to produce the project in black and white because of the nature of the subject, the timeless feel and the fact that the bright orange safety clothing would prove a distraction to the subject. I wanted to create a gritty feel to the pictures to reflect the industry but I hope that they also portray a mood and sensitivity. 4 Being such a key event in the county s history I wanted to share the images with the public through an exhibition and was thrilled to secure a seven week feature at the Mansfield Museum. Having used Fotospeed inkjet papers for many years the question was which paper to use. I normally choose the wonderful Natural Soft Textured Bright White for exhibitions and print sales. However, for this project I selected Platinum Baryta 300 as it has the feel of a traditional fibre based black and white paper. In fact when you open the box it even smells like darkroom paper! The choice was an inspired one as it printed like a dream and handled fine detail and contrast superbly. The exhibition, featuring over 50 large framed black and white images, opened on 8th January. To support the exhibition and showcase many more images I decided to investigate producing a book. After much work and overcoming many hurdles I managed to obtain some sponsorship and self published my book, Thoresby The End Of The Mine. The exhibition and the book proved to be a great success. The whole project has been a wonderful experience as well as creating a valuable archive. It stretched me as a photographer, taught me new things, raised my profile and opened up many opportunities. 10 Fotospeed sponsor Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Image by Ian Cameron - overall winner We were delighted to be the official paper partners for this years awards that celebrated the incredible and varied landscape of Scotland. Veteran photographer Ian Cameron, who still prefers to shoot in film rather than digital, has been announced winner of the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Award. Forres-based Ian beat off strong competition from thousands of entries submitted from all over the world to win the prestigious accolade with his magnificently evocative images shot in the Highlands with his ancient camera. His evocative winning images were all shot in the Highlands with what he describes as his ancient Pentax. They included Caramel Ice, shot at a lonely loch side in Wester Ross as the temperature plunged to minus 25 Celsius; Awakening Ben Loyal, capturing a midsummer sunrise over Ben Loyal in Sutherland; and Ceciles House, a portrait of an old ruined home on desolate Wester Ross with a brooding An Teallach in the background. 10 Ian said: I am absolutely delighted and surprised to have won. I thought the pictures I d entered were pretty decent and that I d do okay, but wow! I don t enter many competitions so to win such a high accolade is definitely one of my proudest moments. The young photographer of the year title went to 15 year old Lewis Donaldson from Newtongrange for his image of a Steam train passing Borthwick Castle on the opening day of the Borders Railway. Lewis said: I am really stunned but very delighted to have become Young Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year with my image of the steam train. I am so pleased they liked the image and I am so happy to have won. In addition to the overall title, The Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year competition consists of nine other categories, including a range of awards sponsored by supporting organisations that include Caledonian MacBrayne, Scottish Natural Heritage, Historic Scotland and the John Muir Trust. The competition, now in its second year, seeks to promote and inspire photographers of all levels to explore Scotland s diverse rural, urban and coastal landscapes, and to promote Scotland s natural, cultural and historic heritage to an international audience. Winning entries will be published in a series of public exhibitions and in a special edition book that will be published on 29th February 2016 Stuart Low, the founder and head judge of the competition said: The competition has gone from strength to strength after last year s inaugural competition captivated the public with our best-selling book. More than double the number of photographers entered the competition this time round and they came from the four corners of the globe. A simple, manual, hand creaser is ideal for any page folding work. Handmade Photobooks by Eddie Ephraums As photographers, we see life through the eye of a lens. The way we present our pictures brings our world even more sharply into focus. What better, more expressive, way to do this than through the beautifully printed pages of a photobook? Photobook making is a multi-disciplinary process. It involves a range of skills: from devising the concept, picture taking, editing, sequencing, designing and laying out the spreads, to printing and then binding the final pages. Often it works best as a collaborative process, in which we benefit from the complimentary skills, experience and feedback of others. Collaboration is one of the many reasons I love to work with other photographers on their books, through the oneto-one mentoring and small-group book making workshops that I run. The process of photobook making stretches and exercises our creativity not just the creative muscles we normally use in our photography. I see the process as a daily practice, a bit like going to the gym, that helps us keep visually fit, alert to photographic opportunities, and present to all manner of creative possibility. For me, an absolutely crucial part of the book making process is choosing the right printing paper. Books are tactile, multi-sensory objects. Everything about them needs to look, feel, smell and even sound right. That s why I use Fotospeed High White Smooth Lite Duo, 225, rag paper. Its weight and tactility are perfect. Both sides of the paper are the same to touch, which is so important when handling the pages of a book. Being a duo, therefore even-sided, paper also means the pages won t curl, and because it s made from 100% cotton rag, High White Smooth folds beautifully. In fact, whatever the printing paper, I always use an affordable hand creaser to help fold pages smoothly. Using a creaser also ensures the folds are 14 Print consistency is an essential part of photobook making. That s why I love to use High White Smooth Lite Duo. consistently accurate, so the end result will always look professional. And because HWS comes in a range of sizes, all the way up to A2, I can choose a size that will give short-grain pages, with the grain running parallel to the spine of the book. At 225, the weight of HWS is ideal for book making. Anything heavier, the pages will become too rigid and stiff to turn. Much lighter, there is the chance of show-through, with the image on the opposite side becoming visible although this can be used as a design element, hinting at what s to come. Another key feature of a good book making paper is its durability. The paper must stand up to repeated handling, which HWS does. And, of course, let s not forget the paper must print beautifully, like HWS: consistently and easily colour profiled. With its natural white matt finish, High White Smooth speaks with a quiet confidence. In contrast, a glossier finish might just be too loud for a book, for which all the component parts should work in harmony, to create a book that doesn t just speak of our view of the world, but sings of it, too. 34 FREE PAPER PROFILING SERVICE & SUPPORT Implementing colour management ensures that your colour maintains its integrity from capture through to print. Using ICC profiling at the printing stage of the process, coupled with calibration and profiling of your monitor, you can ensure that your colour is carried with total accuracy. Fotospeed can provide generic and bespoke profiling service. What is a profile? All devices capable of displaying/outputting colour do so using their own interpretation and they can all be different. Have you ever been in to a department store showroom and seen a bank of televisions showing the same programme but each one displaying the colour slightly differently? The same is true for inkjet printers and monitors. This individual interpretation is the reason you are less likely to see the same colour represented on screen and on paper. A profile is a correction/adjustment file which understands how the output device (screen or printer) is interpreting the colours and adjusts them to meet the ICC standard. Generic vs Bespoke profiles Generic profiles are a quick, simple option for giving the user a profile which they can use with their printer, ink and paper combination - perfect for trying out test packs. A generic profile will never be as accurate as a bespoke ICC Profile because, whilst it will have been created for the same printer, paper and ink combination it is not your specific printer. You can download generic profiles free from the Fotospeed website. Bespoke profiles are built in the same way as a generic profile but with one major difference - they are built using the information from you specific printer ink and paper combination and are therefore tailored specifically for your individual set up. Bespoke profiles are free for all papers Fotospeed distribute - see pricing chart below. We can profile papers not sold by us but there is a nominal charge for these. Why don t my prints match my screen? Whilst printer profiles will ensure the printer is outputting accurate colour results sometimes they still don t match the screen. 35 HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND USE THE FOTOSPEED PROFILING PACK Step 1 Download the latest profiling pack from the Fotospeed website or tech@fotospeed.com to request it. Inside this file will be a set of comprehensive instructions and the test chart. Step 2 Print the charts in line with the instructions. You must not scale the size of the charts or alter the charts in any way before printing. Step 3 Post your charts to Fotospeed. We advise allowing the charts to dry for at least 1 hour before posting, or ideally 24 hours, before posting to ensure the paper has fully dried. N.B. Please make sure you have the correct amount of postage on your envelope as we will not be able to retrieve any post which has been held due to lack of stamps. Step 4 When we receive your charts we will use our spectrophotometer to scan the chart and generate your profile. We will endeavour to your Custom ICC Profile within 24 hours of receiving it. Step 5 Follow the instructions to install your Custom ICC Profile. We also include a calibration file which you can print once the profile has been installed to ensure the profile is accurate. You can now enjoy accurate and consistent colour output. Happy printing! Profiling with Lightroom Lightroom is now a very popular program from Adobe but has one restriction. You cannot print an accurate test chart through Lightroom. However you can use profiles within Lightroom. However there is a simple solution to this in the form of the Adobe Colour Print Utility (ACPU). This utility will allow you to print an accurate test chart quickly and simply without the need for any other programs. How do you use it? Step 1 Download the ACPU for either Mac or PC from the Fotospeed website. Step 2 Download the latest test chart from the Fotospeed website or tech@fotospeed.com to request it. Step 3 Run the ACPU which will automatically ask you for a file to open. Navigate to the downloaded Fotospeed test chart and open. The test chart will be in a portrait orientation and sized correctly - do NOT alter anything. Step 4 Turn off the colour management in the printer driver on PC s, MAC s will take care of this automatically and print the test chart on every paper you would like a profile for. Step 5 Continue from STEP 3 in the instructions to the left. Screen Calibration Whilst profiling your printer is key, it is just as important to make sure you have had your screen calibrated. We recommend that you calibrate your screen at least once a month to ensure accurate colour. There are many different products on the market but we recommend the SPYDER PRO 5 from Datacolour. We have used most products on the market and this one gives us the most accurate and consistent results.
