12 MCPF Audio Visual Martin Fry FRPS EFIAP/b AV-EFIAP BPE5* APAGB As I sat down to watch the smooth running of the 28 sequences at the Priory Centre, Burton upon Trent, I started to reminisce. Its 33 years since I first entered the Midland Counties AV Championships which showcases some of the best work in the country. I had just won Cheltenham Camera Club s first AV competition and following an AV workshop weekend, led by the late Sir George and Lady Doreen Pollock who were pioneers in this field, I decided to enter. The event was organised by Bob Standing and took place at Aston and Erdington s Photo Society venue. My sequence, Forever Autumn, was shown last in the morning session. Perhaps the word shown should be corrected, as played or performed, because in those days we brought and set up our own gear, projectors, amplifiers, speakers and the control unit - some were on early Imatronic units, others like myself and the young Richard Brown, were using a manual Purlock Duo-Fade. This unit went in front of the projectors with two irises that opened and closed the images using wires, while pressing buttons to change slides! The author was the performer and as the slides dissolved we created the magical third image, something never really recreated in this modern technological world. Projection was on one of the three screens all different sizes with the judges moving their chairs to sit in front of the performing AV! Breakdowns were common place and nerves were jangling as the first to last slide went into the projector gate. Were the slides going to pop out of focus, slip in their mount or jam in the projector? Was the mono sound going to be clear or hiss with noise? Was the tape going to pick up the pulse and so on. That year, the inspirational Clive Atkins won with Eight minutes to the Whistle, a documentary about the quarrymen of North Wales. So, what may you ask is all this to do with this year s event? Well there in the programme was sequence number 7, Memories of Slate by Malcolm Imhoff. Could it be about the same location, the valley nicknamed Aston and Erdington Valley in the 1980 s. To my delight it was, but like everything times have moved on. The old chapel was barely noticeable and the houses weathered over time. This is quite a contrast to the world of AV which has advanced beyond belief. One projector achieving multiple effects and a sound system shared by all on the day provides a professional show, from beginner to advanced worker. True, we all have our own ways to communicate the messages and are still on the magical journey but it is great to just sit back, watch and admire the work as the sequences flow from one to another with no nerves! AV is a powerful medium and this year s sequences showed the whole range of possibilities. The first sequence by John Holt, Coming to America hit the pressure point at this volatile time of world history. Another Day in Paradise by Alastair Taylor turned beauty into sheer destruction with the tsunami and deservedly received a judge s award. Another judge s award went to Gordon Nicklin, with a superb documentary that told the story of the proud New Zealanders who fought in World War 1. Other sequences enlightened us about history, from famous artists to musicians, historical transport to castles and cathedrals. Sandra Johnson won the best sequence by an intermediate worker, with the story of Salisbury Cathedral. Then there were places of interest, interpretations of songs and poetry, Alan Tyler s The Gallery which built suspense through the use of strong monochrome images and finally, Kelpies by Howard Bagshaw. This sequence saluted the Scottish mythical beast and the sculpture at Falkirk, through super photography and video elements, with a polished production that both audience and judges agreed was the overall winner. As I went away fully inspired and reflected on an excellent day of sequences and judging, I just wondered if I should get the old Duo-Fade out! No, AVs are simpler now to make, no specialist equipment needed, you still need to have the idea but that is it, As the MCPF President Mike Chapman summed up, AV reaches more of the senses that any other form of photography, so why not have a go yourself at this great art form? 13 IAN GEE FRPS FBIPP A Photographer of Distinction Renowned wedding and portrait photographer Ian Gee, a Fellow of both the Royal Photographic Society and the British Institute of Professional Photographers was so influential in the lives of many photographers of today. Ian was born in Altrincham, Cheshire in 1936 where he lived and worked until he retired at the age of 65. His interest in photography started at school when he was given a camera. He was instantly hooked and wanted to be the next Ansel Adams, Karsh or, Norman Parkinson. However as he said, it never happened, though he met them all later in life. On leaving school, he went to Manchester College of Science and Technology, where the two year photographic course taught him the technical side using glass plate cameras. After college, Ian did his National Service in the R.A.F. and became a junior technician. At one time, he was posted to Anglesey and using high speed film took stills of the army s Thunderbird Rocket launches. This experience put him in a good position for his first job, a photographer working for Avro, the aircraft manufacturer. He remembers with fondness photographing the Vulcan bomber and in particular, due to his small height, climbing into the wings to record damage! In the early 1960s Ian joined Staghead Studios in Manchester at a time when colour printing was just coming in. Through this experience the young photographer was soon writing monthly articles on colour topics for the British Journal of Photography and later the American equivalent. In 1962 he started his own studio, working first as an industrial photographer. His real interest, though, lay in portraiture, and inspired by a Kodak exhibition of 40 Famous British Photographers including the eminent, theatre photographer Angus McBean, he took pictures of theatre productions. Ian followed McBean s style restaging a scene grouping the actors for the camera rather than from the audience view, as was the case with Lord Snowdon. At weekends, he also worked as a wedding operator for several local salons who just gave him a few rolls of film, a church address and off he went, never once did they advise on groupings or posing. Ian soon realised this was an advantage as he could do weddings his way. Using his Rollieflex Camera he documented the story of the day, with an album full of pictures of different sizes, a very novel approach at the time. In 1970 Ian s passion was realized when he opened his own portrait and wedding studio. Around that time, he met Roy Doorbar, wedding manager of Desmond Groves Studio in Altrincham which served the Cheshire Set and also operated a studio in Harrods, London. Despite in effect being competitors, the two highly accomplished wedding photographers realized there was a need to teach wedding photography skills. At that time, Ian was writing a column for the Professional Photographers of America newsletter and spotted a week s summer school they ran. The experience of that summer school and visiting American photographers studios gave them the foundation for their wedding courses. Within weeks of returning to Britain they ran their first three-day school. These training courses were to run for several years, sponsored by Colorlabs International. Building on this success, in 1989, they formed the Guild of Wedding Photographers which was launched to the photo press in London and then at Focus on Imaging The Guild laid down the highest standards of work and ethics in the discipline training hundreds of photographers. Its monthly newsletter had ten pages of instruction, that became a bible for wedding photographers and ultimately developed the art of wedding photography through its recognised qualifications. Today, the Guild of Photographers continues this pioneering work. 13

14 Ian gave so much back to photography serving on the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) for 12 years culminating in being their National President in In the Institute, he organised their first ever national competition, and as the President judged the Kodak Eastman Awards in 1980 alongside Joan Bakewell, Michael Parkinson and Keith Waterhouse. He served on their Admissions and Qualification Board until retiring as a professional photographer in In retirement, he moved to Cheltenham and continued his love of photography but back as an amateur as he said, joining Cheltenham Camera club. There he kept quiet about his professional life until his talents were noted as he gave a memorable portrait talk in 2003, culminating in a group photo of members present. At that time, Ian was editor of the RPS AV Group magazine and like everything Ian did he brought a fresh approach, changing its size to A4 and layout with the first ever colour covers. At Cheltenham, he took on the role of Vice Chairman and then two further years as Chairman where Ian started the annual Cheltenham Mayor portrait presented at the club s exhibition. These gracious portraits show the craftsmanship in his work from planning, to taking and presenting the image. In competition, he won Lloyd Gregory Cup, the club s major award in 2005 as well as numerous other awards. Whatever Ian led, he did it in a quiet manner, working hard behind the scenes, but in a way that enthused others. His lasting legacy at Cheltenham was initiating and developing plans for our 150th Anniversary Celebrations in As the 6th oldest club in Britain, founded by Dr. Edward Wilson, Ian was adamant the club should celebrate its heritage. He was instrumental in bringing together a number of events that graced the special year, as well as the publication of two books capturing the history of photography and life in the town. Just before the celebrations Ian was diagnosed with his illness, but he accepted his condition and was there at the helm to welcome dignitaries at the opening event and joined in with everything through the year including organizing the Celebration Dinner at the year s end. The lasting memory of the year though is Ian s achievements is securing Fujifilm s sponsorship of a photo studio day for family portraits in aid of the charity LINC, who were supporting him through his illness. Naturally, he was at the forefront of proceedings setting up the groups and taking the pictures. Everything went well with families coming along to the tiny space in the Montpellier Gallery to have their portraits taken for a donation to the charity. Then a family of twelve turned up! For Ian that was the challenge, and the image taken of the family showed a relaxed portrait of a true master photographer at work. Ian Gee was a photographer capturing moments of people s lives and sharing his passion with others. He will be greatly missed as a friend, but leaves us having given so much to photography and an enduring inspiration to both amateur and professional photographers. Martin Fry FRPS EFIAP/b AV-EFIAP BPE5* APAGB Our thoughts are with Ian s wife Rosemary, his son s Nicholas and Andrew and their families. 14
