When TRANSFORM Magazine pitted the KODAK i660 Scanner against the BÖWE BELL & HOWELL Spectrum 8125D, they put both machines through rigorous testing. At the conclusion, they rated the i660 Scanner higher, giving it victories in paper handling, color and simultaneous output speeds, and ergonomics. TRANSFORM also commented favorably on innovations from Kodak, including simultaneous output (delivering color and bitonal images, or grayscale and bitonal images, together at rated speed), Perfect Page Scanning with ithresholding, and support of VRS (Virtual ReScan) from Kofax. KODAK i660 Model Wins TRANSFORM Magazine s Scanner Shootout TRANSFORM Magazine praised the i660 Scanner for meeting and exceeding all performance specs, and even beating published specs in duplex mode with auto cropping, deskew and image rotation ALL applied. When I scanned bitonally and threw in thresholding, deskew, crop, halftone removal, noise reduction and bar code detection, the i660 managed 125 ppm/250 ipm five ppm faster than rated speed, wrote Doug Henschen, the magazine s Editor-in-Chief. The bottom line on the scanner comparison, according to TRANSFORM: For our money the KODAK i660 is the more capable scanner overall, with better speeds for demanding image processing and color scanning and an edge in paper handling. 2 Service & Support Customer Delight With KODAK Service & Support Reaches All-Time High Three to four times each year, KODAK Service & Support undertakes a customer satisfaction survey. It s one of the tools we use to help stay ahead in business. The studies are done by an independent research organization that typically phones up to 2,200 end users during the year to get their feedback on our service performance. We ve been continuously measuring customer satisfaction for over three decades as part of our ongoing commitment to providing world-class service to our loyal customer base. The results of the first U.S. survey of 2004 are in, and they demonstrate the highest marks ever for what we like to call customer delight. Diana Nole, General Manager and V.P. of Service in the Americas Region for the Commercial Imaging Group, explains. Typically, the service industry measures customer satisfaction with the three top boxes standing for outstanding, very good and good, she says. At Kodak, we manage to a tighter metric. To measure delight, we include only selection of the top two boxes, including the top ranking of completely satisfied. And this year, 90.1% of respondents ranked us in the top two categories. In comparison, the average delight scores from last year s four surveys came in at 86.6%. To add even more impact to overall customer satisfaction, a full 98% of those participating in the survey gave KODAK Service & Support a rating of Good, Very Good or Outstanding. Nole credits efforts in the field and the field force for this increase, including closed-loop follow up with dissatisfaction issues raised by customers, and quick attention to sales or support opportunities that customers identify. We ve made even more improvements on several key fronts, she notes. Improved response times, first-time fix rates, parts stocking and availability; along with lowering repeat calls, managing relationships locally with a personal touch by the Field Engineers Diana Nole and District Sales Managers all of these areas have been targeted and positive results achieved. Kodak s field service force receives over 80 hours of ongoing training each year, and we ve made a concerted effort to keep our tools state of the art. We ve invested in new and upgraded laptop PCs, wireless modems, cell phones and a variety of new systems for our field force, says Nole. We want them to have the best tools and skill sets possible. Another recent initiative is paying dividends: a strategic relationship with UPS. By aligning with UPS, we are able to add more than 90 parts points throughout the country, says Nole. They can send a driver out to meet a Field Engineer, deliver a part to an end user, or the FE can stop by a UPS site and pick up a part on the way to a customer call. It s definitely aided our first-time fix rates. 5 ISV Profile: IBM Intelligent Forms Processing (IFP) IFP is IBM s document capture solution. IBM markets integrated IFP document capture and forms processing solutions, and serves as an integrator, providing all hardware and software services. Located in Gaithersburg, MD, Intelligent Forms Processing software automates the capture of data from paper documents, employing OCR and ICR, plus sophisticated data repair technologies to ensure highly efficient, virtually error-free scanning and processing of data, images, and 2D bar codes from a variety of forms and documents. Our latest release of IFP software, Version 6.4, adds new capabilities for semi-structured and unstructured documents, says Susan Cargill, IFP Product Manager and Marketing Strategist. Let s say you had semi-structured documents, like invoices where the name and address information might be in different fields at the top left on one, at the upper right on another and Susan Cargill so on, Cargill notes. IFP will search for key words and then do the OCR on the specific fields. Cargill adds that unstructured documents, such as business letters, can also be scanned and the data captured efficiently with IFP. For instance, a consumer might send a letter requesting a copy of her credit report. There s no defined structure to business correspondence like this, and the format can vary greatly. Yet, IFP is able to look for key words and capture the desired information, Cargill says. IFP solutions are found primarily in the public sector in state tax agencies and international census agencies, for instance. To submit a question, howard.schwartz@kodak.com. Q: I ve heard that you are changing your HQ microfilm. Is this true, and what will this mean for our processes? A: It s true! Kodak is introducing a new, improved KODAK IMAGELINK HQ Microfilm. We have made a minor formulation change which maintains all the current features while providing improved raw stock film keeping, less process sensitivity and greater system latitude. The film will have equal or lower Dmin (minimum density) and equal or higher resolution when used in your photographic system. The new product is scheduled for introduction in early November, There will be no change in catalog numbers or product code, but each case will have a new product sticker on it with directions on where to get more information or ask questions. KODAK Capture Software v. 6.5 Is Shipping Just in time for advance functionality with the new KODAK i30 and i40 Scanners; KODAK Capture Software v. 6.5 and KODAK Capture Software, Lite are now available. The new Lite release will be bundled with all KODAK i30 and i40 Scanners and also available for download from the Web. The Lite version contains many, but not all of the full Version 6.5 features.
