Eyes PE-433 scraps Butterfly Backs, Lips FUS-F-1007 ⅛ yd OTHER MATERIALS Double-sided Fusible Web, Fusible Fleece, Batting, Fabric Marker, Pink Fabric Paint (optional) CUTTING DIRECTIONS CONSTRUCTION Step 3: Face and Bottom Border Placement Trace Face/ Neck Template right side down onto double-sided fusible web, roughly cut out shape and peel and stick to fabric, (Flipping your template before tracing ensures you have a girl that faces the same direction as the sketch.) Now, with the backing paper still on, tape the fabric face to the sketch and draw the details of the face and neckline and ear by using a light table or bright window. If you use a Frixion pen it will disappear when ironed, but on the chocolate color fabric it will leave a faint, bleach-like line that you can follow later when stitching. If using chalk, make sure that it is ok to iron on (ie, non-wax). When finished carefully cut the fabric face. See diagram 1. Adhere the face to the background piece following the fusible s instructions and using the sketch for placement. Smooth and pin batting to the back of the background with safety pins around all edges. For the bottom border print cut out your two fabric pieces according to the template and press under the diagonal edges by ½ inch. Place the pieces with the sketch as a guide and pin and sew the first piece along the diagonal edge with an edge stitch, then finish pinning and sew the overlapping piece in the same way. At this point you can quilt the borders with parallel lines. Step 1: Print and tape together your pattern pieces (found in the back of the instructions). From this make individual pattern templates for the Face/Neck, eyes, mouth and bottom triangles by tracing onto another sheet of paper. Keep your face sketch for placement and stitching reference. Dotted lines represent the finished size when sewn. Step 2: Cut Background and Envelope Back Pieces PE-463 Cut one (1) Cut one (1) Cut one (1) 19 square 18.5 x 14 rectangle 18.5 x 9 rectangle Step 4: Hair Roughly cut out flower bunches from the fabric and arrange until you have an attractive afro. For my version I used about four whole flower bunches and two half bunches. First place the flowers so that the edges of the hair around her face and on the border of the afro look nice, and overlap as necessary on the inside of the hairstyle. Stick fabric to the fusible web as before, finish cutting out the flower edges carefully and peel and fuse down hair. Batting Cut one (1) 20 square Cut the rest of the fabric as you go using your templates, following construction directions. DIAGRAM 1 artgalleryfabrics.com

4 Step 5: Eyes & Lips Cut out your eyes, irises and lips and stick with double-sided fusible as previously done. I ended up painting lipstick onto her lips (as shown on the cover) with fabric paint. Feel free to leave her lips pale pink if you prefer. Step 6: Free-Motion Quilting Finally, we get to free-motion quilt and here s where all the fun and magic happens! It really brings our girl to life so take your time and remember that the look of a single line might look sad and wobbly by itself, but when it s gone over back and forth a couple times it looks like an artist s sketch. If you re not comfortable with free-motion quilting practice on a scrap fabric face first. Outline the contours of the face and jawline once or twice, adding shading as shown in the sketch. For the face go back and forth as many times as you need to get a good dark outline on the eyes, brows, nose and mouth. Make sure to outline not just the edges of the hair with stitching, but the edges inside the hairstyle as well. I chose to use a lighter color matching thread for the hair. When finished step back about 5 feet and see if there are any areas that need more definition. Stop and assess as many times as you need to, it's always easy to add more stitching, but you can't rip out the stitching once done without leaving puncture marks so take your time at this stage. Step 7: Butterflies Roughly cut out seven butterflies and fuse them to fusible fleece. Back them with FUS-F-1008, wrong sides together, using temporary spray baste to keep the layers together. Sew around the outlines of the butterflies with a satin stitch and then trim the excess off, being careful not to snip into any of the stitches. Place butterflies, referring to cover photo, and sew in place with a straight stitch down the center body of the butterfly. Bend the butterfly wings up to accentuate the 3D nature. Step 8: Square off and Finish! Trim your quilt to 18.5 square and prepare your envelope back pieces. Press under a quarter inch, and then again another half inch on one of the 18.5 long edges on each piece. Edge stitch and press. With right sides together line up the raw edges of the rectangles to the sides of the pillow top, overlapping the finished edges in the center to create the envelope back. Sew and serge/ overcast stitch around the edge of the pillow at a quarter inch seam allowance. Turn your pillow inside out, using a chopstick or point turner to pop out the corners. Congratulations, you're done! Enjoy your new, beautiful pillow! Quilt the background with a motif of your choice.
