2 Computerised sewing machines are more versatile machines with added features which help to make sewing easier and more precise. They offer greater needle penetration power so can easily handle thicker fabrics. Everything is made easy as these machines offer many different stitch options which are selected by pressing a key or using an LCD touch display screen. They may feature the ability to memorise favourite stitches and stitch combinations. Some have a built in alphabet for sewing name tags and personalising projects. If all the technical terms seem completely baffling, the glossary below should help you to make better sense of them so you ll be able to make the right choice for you. Auto 1 step buttonhole: The buttonhole size is automatically determined when the buttonhole lever is pulled down and a button placed in the sliding buttonhole foot. Automatic buttonhole foot with stabiliser plate: Uneven layers of fabric are no longer a problem. Simply attach buttonhole foot (R) into the stabiliser plate to ensure perfect buttonholes every time. The buttonhole foot can be used without stabiliser plate. Auto-thread tension: For general sewing, set the tension dial at AUTO, which covers a wide range of sewing conditions. Bobbin winder: Thread from the spool winds onto the bobbin keeping an even tension. When the bobbin is fully wound it will stop automatically. Easy set bobbin: Simply drop your bobbin into the bobbin area, guide the thread through the channel and you re ready to sew without the need to pull up your bobbin thread. Feed dogs: These are saw-shaped teeth that move the fabric through the machine as the needle stitches. The feed dogs can be dropped for free machining. Foot pressure dial: The pressure of the foot can be adjusted, for example when stitching applique to help turn corners smoothly. Free arm: The accessory box section of the machine will pull away to reveal a narrow cylinder shaped arm which can be used for sewing around cuffs and trouser legs. Knee lifter: The knee lifter bar fits into the front of the machine; it allows you to use your knee to lift the sewing foot while keeping your hands on your work. This feature is a favourite with quilters. Lock stitch button: This helps when you re starting or ending a stitch or pattern, as it locks off the stitching and stops it unravelling. Maximum speed controller: This function is only available on computerised machines. It sets the maximum sewing speed of the machine irrespective of how far the foot controller is depressed. Needle plate: The metal needle plate fits over the bobbin/feed dog area and has seam guides engraved on it to help measure the seam width whilst stitching. Some models also have cornering guides and patented angle marks to give you more sewing precision. Needle threader: A pull down gadget for threading the machine needle automatically. Needle up/down facility: This allows you to programme the needle to always finish in the up or down position... great for pivoting on corners! Presser foot: The presser foot holds the fabric in place against the feed dogs so that it doesn t move about whilst you are sewing. To assist in sewing different processes a variety of different feet can be attached to the presser foot holder. Most presser feet are quick change snap on type. Reverse sewing button: This allows you to sew a few stitches or stitch continuously in reverse. Stitch adjustment: Use to override default stitch settings for stitch width and stitch length. Stitch selector: On computerised machines it is easy to select a stitch by pressing a key or using a touch pad. More basic machines generally have a dial for the stitch selector. Start/stop button: This enables you to use the machine without the foot control. Stitch library: To access the selection of different stitches available simply key in the stitch number required. Thread cutter: The thread cutter is conveniently positioned on the side of the machine and can be used with one hand when finishing a seam. Threading guides: These are the easy to follow channels for upper threading of the machine. Top loading jam proof bobbin mechanism: Helps smooth stitching especially if you run off the edge of the fabric. Thread is wound onto the bobbin which is dropped into the machine and enclosed by a clear hook cover plate. You can see where the thread is running out! Under bed thread cutter: Press the thread cutter button to cut the threads after sewing. You can continue sewing without pulling the bobbin thread up after trimming the threads. On some machines this can be set to cut after using the lock stitch or memorised stitch patterns. User friendly LCD screen: Helps you spend less time looking for your stitches and more time sewing. Wide angle white LED lighting: Offers greater illumination for all your sewing projects.
