The foreign contingent was warmly welcomed at the airport. Flags were flown. The national anthem of Indonesia and Singapore were enthusiastically sung. The banners were exchanged. Then the teams did their warm-up. The First Aid team was on standby. And some players prayed. Then they kicked off. Initially the Indonesians were awed by the biggersized Singaporeans but after the warm-up, they were surprised that the Singaporeans appeared exhausted. When the final whistle was blown, both Indonesian teams took the Champion and the Runner-up titles. Well done, Aardwolf Pestkare Indonesia. You were truly great. First Aiders 1

3 PERCENTERS Here are our 2017 perfect attendees, with no sick leave. As a reward, they were each presented with a super-sized Australian mango. In the true tradition of the Lunar New Year, Managing Director Patrick Chong led the company in a loh hei session. The vegetarian dish was tossed and truly enjoyed by the staff. 3

4 CHINA A meeting was held in Shanghai to discuss the future direction of Aardwolf Pestkare China. In attendance were (seated from left) Managing Director China Rosalind Yang, Managing Director Singapore Patrick Chong, Chairman China Phil Xiao, Group Managing Director John Ho. Our heartiest Congratulations to our Accounting Executive Belinda Poh and Senior Supervisor Mohd Nazree Suhaimi on their completion of 10- and 20-year service, respectively. At the long-service award presentation, Group Managing Director John Ho thanked them for their years of loyal service. They are indeed role models for new recruits. 4

8 GETTING TO KNOW The Polynesian Rat invasion is confirmed. This was the message Senior Foreman Sabirin Mohd Sadli sent when he serviced a Client s premises in Jurong. In his 20 years servicing the Jurong area, this is the first time he has seen a dead Polynesian Rat, Rattus exulans in his service zone. It is the third most widespread species of rat in the world, after the Norway Rat, Rattus norvigicus and the Roof Rat, Rattus rattus. It is recognized by its slender body, pointed snout, large ears and relatively small delicate feet. It is brown in colour with a whitish belly. It lives in the grasslands and jungles but with our rapid urbanisation, it will find it easier to move in and live alongside Man. MEMOIR: MAJOR G SURAJAN On 12 February 2018, the Pest Management Industry in Singapore lost one of its illustrious leaders. Major G Surajan was the President of the Singapore Pest Management Association for a notable 18 years. During his term of office, working with the National Environment Agency, the industry became more professional with its technicians being trained, tested and licensed. Those who worked closely with him found him to be logical and truly committed to the industry. He argued strongly with those who disagreed with his ideas but in the end, he would accept the opposing view, if it is good for the industry. Major G Surajan, ex-republic Singapore Navy Officer I remember once when he went against his doctor s advice about going to Langkawi for the Pest Summit. The wife of a council member confronted him with the accusation that he must be insane to do that. Surajan meekly replied, I have done many crazy things in my life but this has to be the worst. That left the lady dumbfounded. I couldn t help but asked him later how he managed to do that. His reply was I may be crazy at times but I am not stupid. Well Major, we will all miss your sense of humour, your ability to straighten things out amidst chaos and your occasional I will smash him, which of course never happened.
