4 Speaker Biographies Eleanor Clift Contributing Editor at Newsweek Emcee Eleanor Clift became a contributing editor at Newsweek in September She writes on the Washington power structure, the influence of women in politics and other issues. She is currently assigned to follow the jockeying over policy and politics in the new age of Obama. Clift brings her perspective to analyze whether our political leaders are capable of seizing the moment, and what the impact will be of a new politically engaged population. Her column, Capitol Letter, is posted each Friday on Newsweek.com. Formerly Newsweek s White House correspondent, Clift also served as congressional and political correspondent for six years. During her career, she covered the campaigns of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton as well as the Iran-Contra scandal, which tarnished the Reagan White House. In June 1992 she was named deputy Washington bureau chief. Clift began her career as a secretary to Newsweek s National Affairs editor in New York. She was one of the first women at the magazine to move from secretary to reporter. Clift is a regular panelist on the syndicated talk show, The McLaughlin Group. She wrote two books together with her late husband, Tom Brazaitis, War Without Bloodshed: The Art of Politics and Madam President: Shattering the Last Glass Ceiling. Other books include Founding Sisters and Two Weeks of Life: A Memoir of Love, Death and Politics. Clift was a member of the Newsweek reporting team that contributed to A Long Time Coming, written by Evan Thomas. She lives in Washington, D.C. where she is on the board of the International Women s Media Foundation, the Center for Politics and Journalism, and the National Hospice Foundation. Appleseed

5 Mark Russell Political Humorist Whenever Mark Russell is down in the dumps, he opens the newspaper and immediately cheers up. Practically everything he sees strikes him as funny. Some days he says, the jokes jump off the pages and write themselves. Mark plays off the day s headlines, performing stand-up comedy while accompanying himself on the piano. He spent 30 years on public television as host of the Mark Russell Comedy Specials, which were consistently among the top-rated shows on that network. With impeccable timing, twinkling eyes and shock-of-recognition insights into American politics, he draws merriment from the pomposity of public life. Today his syndicated column is enjoyed all over America, as are his CDs, tapes and videos. Mark Russell is on the road most of the year performing at colleges, conventions and in theaters. And just recently he has added lyricist and song writer to his portfolio for a new children s musical, Teddy Roosevelt and the Treasure of Ursa Major which premiered in 2006 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mark and Tom Isbell are currently working on Teddy Roosevelt and the Ghostly Mistletoe with Mark again writing the songs. It, too, will premiere at the Kennedy Center this December. He still lives in Washington, DC with his wife, Alison. He is the father of three and the grandfather of seven. And his answer to the frequently asked question, Do you have any writers? is Oh, yes...i have 535 writers. One hundred in the Senate and 435 in the House of Representatives. Raising the Pro Bono Bar

16 Appleseed Raises the Pro Bono Bar Each year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants must defend their right to remain in the country. Swept up in an overburdened court system that is structurally unable to render fair and accurate decisions, these individuals face the direst of consequences: prolonged incarceration, permanent separation from family, or even removal to a country where persecution and death await. In response, Appleseed has embarked on a groundbreaking project to reform U.S. immigration courts, generating a comprehensive slate of recommendations to redress problems at all stages of the adjudicatory process. Based on countless hours of research and more than a hundred in-depth interviews with experts in the field, the report, Assembly Line Injustice, outlines Appleseed s strategy for ensuring accuracy, legitimacy and efficiency in a system that currently lacks critical resources and freedom from political bias. Appleseed s proposals stem from several core objectives: More immigration judges and support staff are needed to handle already excessive (and growing) caseloads. Procedural and administrative practices relating to translation, recordkeeping, videoconferencing, and the release of case files must be improved. Immigration courts must be depoliticized to remove the threat of systemic bias.

17 Immigrants must have better access to pro bono representation, and pro se defendants must be better informed of proper procedures. Now in the crucial advocacy stage, Appleseed, along with its pro bono partners at Latham & Watkins and Akin Gump, is presenting its findings and proposals to relevant government agencies, legislators, and like-minded organizations. Moving forward, Appleseed is applying its impressive network of partners and resources to ensure that immigration courts uphold the ideals of American justice. Raising the Pro Bono Bar
