1 Presenters: 2014 Potpourri of Timely Topics Just Law Attorney Rebecca Billick, a registered Domestic Relations Mediator, a Parenting Coordinator and GAL, is the owner of Billick Mediation & Family Law in Valparaiso and Chicago, President of the Indiana Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts,, former member of the Indiana Supreme Court ADR Task Force, and former adjunct instructor at Ivy Tech Community College, Bloomington. She has a BS in Criminology with Minors in Public Administration and Juvenile Justice from Florida State University, MS in Counseling from Purdue University, and her Juris Doctor from Indiana Maurer School of Law in Bloomington. Her most recent publications include: Young Children and the Courts, Indiana Association for Infant and Toddler Mental Health, 2013, and School Choice in Indiana: Sifting through the Rhetoric, The Center for Education and Evaluation Policy, Attorney Chris Daniels is the Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor with the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council. A graduate of the Northern Illinois School of Law, Chris worked for the St. Joseph County Prosecutor s Office from 2006 to While there, Chris was the prosecutor member of the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, as well as supervisor for the Traffic and Misdemeanor division of the prosecutors office. In 2011, Chris joined the Prosecuting Attorneys Council. As a member of IPAC, Chris works with elected prosecutors, law enforcement, judges, and legislators on a variety of issues, including training, bill drafting, and consultation. Before beginning his career in law, Scott was an officer in the United States Marine Corps, then worked in the private sector as a regional sales director for two major office furniture companies. Scott attended the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis where he graduated with summa cum laude honors in Upon graduation, Scott DeVries gained admission to the North Carolina and Indiana Bars. After serving as a judicial clerk for the Indiana Court of Appeals, he spent seven years as a Marion County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. In 2003, Scott was selected to be a Master Commissioner in the criminal courts. In 2007, Scott assumed the position of General Counsel of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. During his years with the BMV, Scott analyzed every aspect of the Bureau s business operations and legal requirements. He rewrote almost the entire Administrative Code for the BMV, resulting in the repeal of numerous regulations and the adjustment of hundreds of other regulations. He redesigned the structure of the administrative hearings department to increase its efficiency and effectiveness, resulting in the elimination of thousands of backlogged pending cases. Additionally, he spearheaded a project to change the procedures for the electronic transmission of BMV records to customers in compliance with federal and state requirements. Scott DeVries is a frequent lecturer on motor vehicle law, and in 2013 worked with the General Assembly working group to prepare proposed changes to Indiana's motor vehicle laws for the 2014 Legislative Session. sdevries@devries- law.com Attorney James Foster, maintains his office at 5930 Hohman Ave., Hammond, Indiana Jim received his BA from Indiana University (Bloomington) and also obtained his JD from Indiana University School of Law (Bloomington). Jim has been a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 1980, served on the

2 board of the Criminal Law Section of the ISBA for over ten years and was chairperson of the Criminal Defense Section of the LCBA for over ten years. Jim maintains a general practice but has concentrated/preferred the criminal practice, both state and federal, since early in his career. Attorney Brian T. Gensel has spent 26 years as a Porter County Prosecutor, beginning as a juvenile court deputy prosecutor in 1988 and advancing through all levels of the office. In 1994 he was chosen to serve as Chief Deputy Prosecutor under Prosecutor James Douglas and in 2006 was elected Prosecutor. Brian has handled Adult Protective Services cases in Porter County for the last 20 years and has lectured the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Agency recruits on Elder Law for the last 10 years. Brian graduated from Purdue University in 1983 and received his Juris Doctor degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at Valparaiso University teaching Trial Advocacy and has also taught trial advocacy for ICLEF. He also supervises law students in the Prosecutor's Externship program and coaches the Valparaiso High School Mock Trial Team. bgensel@yahoo.com Attorney Christine Haskell is the Jasper County Prosecutory Attorney. She graduated summa cum laude from Purdue University in May Upon graduation, Ms. Haskell continued her education at St. Joseph College, before entering Valparaiso University School of Law, where she graduated cum laude in After working at Jasper County Department of Child Services, Ms. Haskell joined the Jasper County Prosecutor s Office. In addition to work, Ms. Haskell also volunteers her time for the Rensselaer Chamber of Commerce and The Carnegie Players. She is currently teaching a class for the Forensic Science Masters Program with two other colleagues entitled Ethics and the Law at St. Joseph College. She is an Associate Member of the Academy of Forensic Sciences where she has attended and presented at the Academy conferences. Christine.haskell@co.jasper.IN.US Attorney Teresa Hollandsworth, graduated Valparaiso University School of Law in After a brief time working as a Deputy Prosecutor for the Lake County Prosecutor s Office, she went into private practice handling criminal and family law cases. In July of 2000, she joined the staff of the Lake County Public Defender s Office. In her capacity as a Felony Public Defender, she has handled all types of felony cases, including two capital cases. tkhollandsworth@yahoo.com Attorney Donald Lundberg is a partner in the Indianapolis office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, where he is a partner in the firm s Litigation Department and serves as the firm s Deputy General Counsel. Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg in 2010, Mr. Lundberg was the longtime executive secretary of the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission, a post he occupied since Prior to his work at the Indiana Supreme Court, he served for 15 years in a number of positions for Legal Services Organization of Indiana, Inc. (now Indiana Legal Services, Inc.), ultimately as Director of Litigation. Mr. Lundberg represents judges, lawyers and other professionals in disciplinary and licensing matters, ethics issues, malpractice cases and other professional responsibility matters. In his role for the Indiana Supreme Court, he led the agency that investigates and prosecutes claims of Indiana attorney misconduct. As Deputy General Counsel to Barnes & Thornburg, he helps lead Barnes & Thornburg s internal professional responsibility, legal ethics compliance and risk management initiatives.

3 Mr. Lundberg is a frequent speaker on professional responsibility and legal ethics topics. He has written a monthly ethics column in Res Gestae, the Indiana State Bar Association magazine, for the past nine years. He is admitted to practice law in the State of Indiana and before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana. Mr. Lundberg earned his J.D. summa cum laude in 1976 from the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University Bloomington, where he was elected to Order of the Coif and a recipient of the West Hornbook Award for top GPA for three consecutive years. He served for many years as an adjunct faculty member for his alma mater. In 2006, he was selected as one of 25 Inaugural Fellows of the National Institute for Teaching Ethics and Professionalism. Donald.lundberg@btlaw.com Dean Andrea Lyon Andrea Lyon was appointed as Dean of Valparaiso University Law School in July of She is thrilled to be at the helm at this time of needed change in legal education. Valparaiso University is a leader in curriculum reform and embracing diversity. Formerly, she was a clinical professor of law, associate dean of Clinical Programs, and director of the Center for Justice in Capital Cases. Lyon received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and her law degree from Antioch School of Law. After graduating, she worked for the Cook County Public Defenders' Office in the felony trial division, post- conviction/habeas corpus unit, preliminary hearing/first municipal (misdemeanor) unit and the appeals division. Her last position there was chief of the Homicide Task Force, a 22- lawyer unit representing persons accused of homicides. She has tried over 130 homicide cases, both while in the Public Defender's Office and since. She has defended more than 30 potential capital cases at the trial level and has taken 19 through penalty phase; she won all 19. In 1990, she founded the Illinois Capital Resource Center and served as its director until joining the University of Michigan Law School faculty as an assistant clinical professor in A winner of the prestigious National Legal Aid and Defender Association's Reginald Heber Smith Award for best advocate for the poor in the country, she is a nationally recognized expert in the field of death penalty defense and a frequent continuing legal education teacher throughout the country. Pollem is the Military Assistance Project Director with Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS), located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Polli began with ILS as an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow. Tasked with starting ILS s Military Assistance Project, her practice is focused on providing legal assistance to veterans, current service members, and their families. Polli graduated magna cum laude from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She served as a Law Clerk for Justice Stephen J. Markman with the Michigan Supreme Court. She also taught advanced legal writing at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Before law school, Polli served 22 years in the military 11 years active duty in the US Air Force and 11 years in the Illinois Air National Guard primarily working in aircraft maintenance and logistics. Judge Potter took the bench in February of 2006 succeeding the Honorable E. Duane Daugherty. Judge Potter practiced law in Rensselaer, Indiana, in private practice, starting in He is a graduate, cum laude, of the Indiana University School of Law- Indianapolis, as well as a graduate of Indiana State University, cum laude, with B.A. in Humanities and an M.S. in Spanish. Besides practicing law and serving as Judge, he has served as adjunct faculty at St. Joseph s College. He is also a graduate of the Indiana Judicial College. In 2010, Judge Potter received the Robert J. Kinsey Award for Outstanding Judicial Service and Support to the Children and Youth of Indiana. Judge Potter is a past member of the Court Security Conference and a current member of the Judicial Ethics Conference. He has presented at several seminars and conferences. He has presented sessions on Contempt of Court at the New Judges School and at the Indiana Judicial Conference. He has also presented at the Indiana Juvenile Conference on topics such as campaign ethics and human trafficking, as well as teaching a training session for court security officers. Judge Potter is also a member of the board of directors of the Indiana Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and has presented educational sessions at the Indiana Conference of Juvenile Judges. Judge Potter is also a member of the Indiana State GAL/CASA Board of Advisors and is a regular presenter at the annual state GAL/CASA training conference each fall.
