1 2017 Regulatory Summit 8:00-8:30 am REGISTRATION & BREAKFAST 8:30-8:45 am SESSION 1 8:45-9:30 am WELCOME Richard Magnussen, Magnussen Furniture 2017 AHFA Chairman The Trump Administration s Impact on EPA Regulation William Guerry Jr. Partner, Kelley Drye William Guerry Jr. is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Kelley Drye, chair of the firm s environmental practice, and a nationally recognized legal expert on Clean Air Act issues. His experience includes all aspects of federal and California emission regulations, and he has successfully resolved more than a dozen enforcement cases brought by the California Air Resources Board or EPA against individual manufacturers. He is among the founders of Californians for Enforcement Reform and Transparency, a group that encourages improvements to CARB s enforcement program. He will open the Summit program with a broad overview of the Trump Administration s impact on environmental regulations. SESSION 2 9:30-10:15 am Federal Formaldehyde Rule Compliance Update Erik Winchester Fiber & Organics Branch Chief, U.S. EPA Erik Winchester is chief of the Fibers & Organics Branch in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s Office of Pollution Prevention & Toxics. He has been at EPA for 18 years and has worked in the toxics, water and research and development offices on policy, regulatory and scientific issues. His branch is responsible for implementing the new federal regulation for formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products. He addressed industry executives at AHFA s Formaldehyde Workshop in January and now returns to provide a much-needed update on recent amendments to the formaldehyde regulation and what they mean for home furnishings manufacturers and importers. 10:15-10:45 am BREAK 2017 Regulatory Summit: Unraveling Complexities

2 SESSION 3 10:45-11:30 am The Legislative & Regulatory Climate in Washington for 2018 Chris Andresen Senior Vice President, Dutko GR SESSION 4 11:30 am-12:15 pm Chris Andresen is a senior vice president in the Washington, D.C., office of Dutko GR, a division of Huntsworth s global communications, government affairs and lobbying firm and AHFA s long-time government relations partner. He joined Dutko in 2006 and has worked extensively with clients to identify policy opportunities and detailed legislative strategies. He frequently reports to AHFA s Board on Congress and the Administration, focusing on the impact their actions have on our industry and its business activities. His Summit presentation will include his insights on the current legislative and regulatory climate in Washington, as well as an early outlook for How a Global Brand Manages Regulatory Compliance Mark Fellin Worldwide Regulatory Intelligence Manager, Amazon Mark Fellin is responsible for developing, promoting and implementing regulatory policies for Amazon Direct Imports. Prior to joining Amazon, he was director of regulatory affairs for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, where he worked with executive staff, coalition partners and federal and state agencies to develop, execute and advance JPMA s regulatory agenda. His career also includes an appointment with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, where he worked as the public affairs and legislative specialist under Commissioner Anne Northup. His Summit address will provide an overview of current regulatory and compliance issues from an e-commerce perspective. 12:15-1:15 pm LUNCH SESSION 5 1:15-2:00 pm Compliance & Risk Management: Cost of Business or Competitive Advantage Michael Sullivan Managing Partner, Womble Carlyle Michael Sullivan is a managing partner in the Atlanta office of Womble Carlyle. He is a mass tort and complex commercial litigation attorney with over 30 years of experience. His practice today includes acting as a trusted advisor to senior level executives on risk management, cost control and litigation management issues. Sullivan s pragmatic approach to understanding the scientific issues behind regulations and how they impact all aspects of business have made him a frequent speaker for AHFA programs. Today he joins colleague Christa Burger in exploring the balance between the costs and competitive advantages of a robust compliance program. Summit Agenda

3 SESSION 5 Continued Compliance & Risk Management (continued) Christa Burger Attorney, Womble Carlyle Christa Burger is a litigator with a broad range of experience defending complex mass tort and business matters, including class actions, contracts, negligence and product liability claims. Her practice also involves counseling corporate clients on a variety of marketing and regulatory issues, such as compliance with California s Proposition 65, product labeling and responding to inquiries from state and federal agencies. She teamed with colleague Michael Sullivan in January when they looked at best practices for complying with the new federal formaldehyde rule. Their Summit presentation will examine compliance and risk management. SESSION 6 2:00-2:45 pm Global Compliance Issues in an E-Commerce World Christine Zanella, Ph.D. Compliance Manager, Wayfair Christine Zanella is the compliance manager in Wayfair s legal department, where she works at the interface of global product compliance and high tech innovation to drive a compliance program that keeps up with the rapid pace of change in e-commerce. Wayfair is the largest online-only furniture retailer in the U.S., with over 7,000 suppliers and 7 million products. Zanella has a background in environmental pathology and toxicology. Her Summit presentation will describe how Wayfair uses process management to maintain product and compliance information in the face of regulatory changes. 2:45-3:15 pm BREAK SESSION 7 3:15-4:00 pm The Unpredictable Landscape of State Regulation Allyson Azar Manager of State Affairs & Political Mobilization, American Chemistry Council Allyson Azar is the manager of state affairs and political mobilization for the American Chemistry Council in Washington, D.C. Her responsibilities include legislative reporting and advocacy on key chemical and plastics issues and generating a weekly report for stakeholders in all 50 states. She also manages advocacy activities and political mobilization efforts in six Mid-Atlantic states, including communications with state coalition allies and legislators. Azar participates in several public policy groups, including the National Conference of State Legislatures. In her Summit presentation, she will address the unpredictable landscape of state regulation, focusing on the growing patchwork of state efforts to regulate chemical use in consumer products Regulatory Summit: Unraveling Complexities

4 SESSION 8 4:00-4:45 pm Tolerable Product Risk Special Guest: JOSEPH MOHOROVIC Commissioner, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Joseph Mohorovic was sworn in as a commissioner on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision in October 2013 for a term expiring in October During his nomination hearing, Mohorovic said that addressing furniture and television tip-over hazards would be among his top priorities on the commission. Prior to joining the commission he was senior vice president at Intertek. Before joining Intertek, he served two terms as State Representative for New Mexico s 28th District before resigning elected office to serve in the CPSC administration of former Chairman Hal Stratton from 2002 to SESSION 9 4:45-5:30 pm CPSC Updates Special Guest: ANN MARIE BUERKLE Acting Chair, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Ann Marie Buerkle has served as a commissioner on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission since July She was named Acting Chairman of the agency in February, and in July President Trump announced his intent to nominate her to be permanent Chairman and to serve an additional seven-year term on the commission. Prior to joining the CPSC, she served the people of Upstate New York s 25th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. During her time in Congress, Buerkle served on the Oversight & Government Reform, Foreign Affairs and Veterans Affairs committees and served as chair of the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health. Prior to her term in Congress, Buerkle worked in a private law firm.
