As a consultant of Obstetrics & Gynaecology his career achievements were as follows: In November 1971 He was the Director of Juba Regional Hospital until July During the period of he attended the MPH course at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health & Hygiene at Baltimore, MD, USA. On his return he preferred to work at El Obeid Hospital. In 1978 he attended a laparoscopy course at Johns Hopkins Hospital for three weeks. After his stationed at El Obeid, he was transferred to Omdurman as Director of Omdurman Maternity Hospital (OMH). In 1986 he was the director of the UNFPA/WHO Maternal & Child Health/ Family Planning Project at OMH. He did a number of WHO consultancies. He later became undersecretary of the Federal Health Ministry. Between he was president of the Sudanese Society of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and president of the Family Planning Association, an affiliate of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). On personal level, late Mohamed was a senior colleague, but he never made one feel so. His academic contributions included being a professor at (OIU). He was one of the founders of the (SPMC), 67 an active leading member of the Sudan Medical Council (SMC) and Sudan Doctors Union (SDU). He was a regular external examiner, to all medical schools and the SMC until he was unable to. He played a major role in promotion of midwifery services. Professor Abu Salab was a brother and a sincere friend of all. He did not differentiate between colleagues because of religion, sect or political affiliation, in-spite of being a committed Islamic leader. He had several nonmedical sincere friends, being merchants or mechanics. His friendship was genuine. He was faithful to his friends. He was rather shy, quiet, always smiling, but serious, precise and strict when necessary. Professor Abu Salab and I have lived in the same quarter at El Obeid. He was ahead of me by three years. His late younger brother, Abdullahi and two of his cousins were my classmates and close friends. I always enjoyed having a meal at his home; he was very generous. I tried to make him come over to Saudi Arabia but he declined the idea. Definitely, he brought up his sons and

4 Tribute to the late Mr. Zaki El Din Ahmed Hussein Founder and first President of SSG ( ) Mr Zaki El Din Ahmed was born in Abuharaz near Alobeid, Sudan on November 15, His education and achievements were as follows: Studied initially at local kuttab, then middle school in Alobeid-Alameereyah and high school at Hantoub-Medani. In 1951 he joined the University of Khartoum and studied Medicine where he achieved several academic prizes in Physiology, Pathology and Surgery. In 1957 he won the Lord Kitchener prize for overall academic achievements award. He was appointed as house officer in Khartoum Teaching Hospital until 1959 and was posted to Kaboita as a medical officer but was recalled 3 months later to sit for the primary exam for the Fellowship of the of Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Khartoum in early 1960 (the first time this exam was held there). After passing the exam he was dispatched to the UK for training and was successful in his first attempt that gained him the FRCS (Edinburgh) in December He returned to the Khartoum University in 1963 where he studied the advanced gastrointestinal disease. In 1967 he returned back to the UK to get further training in gastrointestinal disease for two years. In 1973 he left the University and worked for the Ministry of Health and was also appointed the head of the newly established Department of Gastrointestinal Disease department. In 1975 he established a comprehensive Gastrointestinal Endoscopy unit in Khartoum North Teaching Hospital (KNTH) and later of the same year he travelled to Japan to further develop his endoscopy skills. On his return in early 1986 he started to place a plan for national GI centre which culminated in Ibn Sina Hospital, with the great assistance of the Japanese. In 1990 he took voluntary retirement from the Ministry of Health. In 1993 he rejoined the University as Professor of Surgery where he continued teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students for 14 years further. 69
5 Tribute to the late Mr Zaki El Din Ahmed Ahmed Zaki & Suliman Fedail Mr. Zaki passed away peacefully at his home early on Friday 12 December Mr. Zaki s narration of Ibn Sina Hospital the establishment of GI centre In May 1975 I went to Japan on a scholarship offered by the Japan International Cooperation establish a special centre dedicated to the study and management of gastrointestinal disease. The second was that I needed somehow to obtain the support of Japan for this project. I was back in the Sudan I kept pondering on how to establish the GI centre. The Ministry of Health was receptive but had no significant fund. However, they made a very important commitment; they agree to have this centre built on the ground where Ibn Sina now stands. It is remarkable that this area had been designated for a hospital when Ammarat was first planned in The Ministry of Health held on to this piece of land for twenty years as an open space inspite of several attempts from other government agencies to acquire it for other purposes. Now armed with the promise of this prime piece of real estate I felt I had a huge bargaining chip. Soon I had the chance to play my strong hand. I was visited by a very active endoscopy department with one of the directors of Esai Pharmaceutical Company. Esai was also very influential in Japan. I knew this particular director Mr Mucai with his previous visits to Sudan. He seemed impressed by the work we were doing and this encouraged me to tell him about my idea for the GI centre and my hope that Japan would be interested to help. I was happily surprised when he became really excited about the project. He advised me that the best way to enlist Japanese help was to involve the University of Okayama in Japan and he went on to say that the way to involve Okayama was to write to them inviting them for sisterly cooperation with my department in KNTH. 70 Seeing my apparent surprise he asked me to write a letter to the Dean of the Medical School of Okayama University inviting him to accept this scientific union. He said he would take the letter himself and deliver it to the dean. He went on to explain that Okayama University was the main advisor to the Japanese government in its international medical aid. I was very excited and duly wrote the letter and gave it to Mr Mucai. To my great happiness two months later the Dean of Okayama University came to Sudan. I was contacted by the Japanese Embassy of his visit. He came and visited us in Khartoum North and made a programme for him to meet the Dean of our Medical School and Vice Chancellor of the University. I explained to him my ambition of building a GI unit and showed him the area in Ammarat where it will be built. A few days later he went back apparently very supportive of the idea. I continued my contact with Mr. Mucai in his visits to Khartoum which happened regularly and he became very much dedicated to the project. He arranged for the Sudanese Ambassador in Japan to visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo to discuss the proposed GI centre in Khartoum. On my advice our Minister of Health also visited the Japanese Ambassador in Khartoum and told him that the project would be of great help to the Sudanese people. By 1981 I had the first feeling of a positive response from Japan. A group of three Japanese officials came to Khartoum. One from JICA, one from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and one from the Ministry of Health. I was asked to come and meet them at the Japanese Embassy in Khartoum. We had a cordial meeting but it was difficult to tell what conclusion they came to. However, a few months later, yet another group came and they looked more senior. We had a meeting with them at the Japanese Embassy and this was a lengthy meeting. They offered that they would be prepared to
6 Tribute to the late Mr Zaki El Din Ahmed Ahmed Zaki & Suliman Fedail recommend a small medical centre but not a hospital. I became very angry and said that I wanted a hospital and that I shall somehow wall, the inside roads and the garden. This turned out to be more hard work than we bargained for. Step one was to write the Ministry of Health and get their approval. Step two was to get the approval of the Ministry of Planning. Step three was to the approval of the Ministry of Health specifying the money necessary and step four you had to contact the Ministry of Finance to obtain the necessary funds. These steps were to be repeated for the perimeter wall the roads and adjourned the meeting and suggested that we meet the following day. The next day we had a short meeting and asked us to take them to visit the various medical facilities in Khartoum. So for the following four days we toured all the main hospitals in the three towns, Khartoum Hospital, Omdurman Hospital, Khartoum North Hospital, Soba Hospital and Ibrahim Malik Hospital. In each hospital we spent hours visiting wards, operating theatres, kitchens and bathrooms. They were taking notes and photographs and at the end of their visits I thought they had a bad impression. The night before they left I invited them to a big dinner party at my house in their honour. To impress them as much as possible I invited the Minister of Finance, Sayed Ibrahim Moniem, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and the Managing Director of Kenana Sugar Company and several other dignitaries and doctors. I thought they were very impressed. When we said farewell I had a feeling that their body language was very positive and encouraging. Things then moved very fast and in a forward direction. In December 1982 I was invited to go to Tokyo and supervise the bidding for the contract to build the hospital. I was supported by a Japanese architectural firm appointed by the Japanese government. Seven firms produced bids and eventually Konike Company won the contract to build and equip 71 the garden. The perimeter wall was the most demanding because I had to spend hours touring the three towns for a big building surrounded by such a wall. One afternoon I passed by the Parliament building and was immediately impressed by its perimeter wall. The next day we sat with the architect and spent hours sketching and drawing until we came up with the present wall which I believe to be quite acceptable. with or without their help build it. They were not prepared for my outburst of temper and the hospital. On Christmas day of December 25,1982 at the offices of the Sudanese Embassy in Tokyo I signed the contract with the company. By mid March 1983 Konike started digging the foundation. They promised that in two years time they will finish. True to their word the building was completed in May 1985 and all furnishings and equipments were in place. I was then faced with the fulfillment of the Sudanese commitment, building the perimeter wall, the inside roads and the garden. 7 Tribute to the late Mr Zaki El Din Ahmed Ahmed Zaki & Suliman Fedail I was fortunate that in dealing with the Ministries of Health, Planning and Finance I was dealing with people of my generation, people I met at Hantoub or the University and in various aspects of public life. I don t remember having any difficulty in meeting any ministers or senior civil servant, or difficulty in obtaining approval for funds. However, building by nature is a slow process and it was not until the end of 1985 that Ibn Sina reached the shape it is now in. While I was dealing with the physical construction I was also developing my ideas about the staffing and administrative sides. I am pleased to say that I introduced for the first time the following concepts: i. Nursing to be limited to the graduates of the Khartoum Nursing College ii. iii. Food catering was to be on the basis of cooked individual meals designed and supervised by hospital dieticians Cleaning the building should be by private contractors To achieve this and do it well I needed financial and administrative independence. Luckily the Minister of Health happened to be a surgeon, Mr. Suleiman Abu Saleh. It was tough to convince him but he agreed that Ibn Sina, although part of the Ministry of Health, it should have a separate entity status. This meant that we discussed our budget independently with the Ministry of Finance and on a separate day. It also meant that we shall have full control of whatever income we obtained from the public and any donations we receive. We deposited such money in the name of the hospital in a private bank. I was able to hand pick certain individuals to some key positions. When the negotiations were almost concluded the Ministry of Health came with the idea to expand the original project. They rightly thought as the Japanese warmed to the project it would be wise to include Urology and Otorhinolaryngology (ENT). The Japanese accepted this addition without any discussion. They coined the name Khartoum Training Hospital for the project but when the building was almost ready they asked me to give the hospital a permanent name. My first thoughts were to pick a name of Sudanese association, however, I could not find such a name. Somehow the name Ibn Sina caught my imagination. It was a lucky coincidence that at the time UNICEF was celebrating the 1000 anniversary of Ibn Sina. I still feel that after many years that Ibn Sina was a good choice Although the building was equipped and largely staffed I resisted the idea to have its opening ceremony until we actually started working for a few weeks. His son, AhmedZaki El DinAhmed Orthopedic Surgeon I came to know Mr. Zaki El Din Ahmed when I returned from UK in At that time he was the founder and first President of the Sudanese Society of Gastroenterology (SSG). I remember when he welcomed me very warmly and introduced me to the members during its meeting at that time which was held at the Hilton hotel. He unassumingly pays the bill of every monthly meeting from his own money. I found him like a father figure, likeable, relatively informal never pompous. He was a very good chairman as he listens, questions and reasons in good spirit and with sense of humor. He introduced the SSG to the international and regional gastroenterology associations. He was a founding member of the PanArab Association of Gastroenterology. When he took over the project of Ibn Sina Hospital and became its first director in 1986 he invited me to join him and that started our long relationship and friendship. We worked as team of surgeons and physicians, with combined rounds and clinical meetings. That was something unique and new which surprised a lot of visitors from Japan and Europe. His door was always open to the staff and he was always ready with advise, encouragement and help. He acts for the interest of all and not some functions. He was a liberal minded doctor and an excellent surgeon. He was keen in training junior doctors. He was very popular among nursing and medical staff and very much liked by the patients who found him very caring, sensitive and understanding. His home was open to us with his wife Dr. Sitana Hassan Ishag hosting countless dinners and working lunches for the members of the SSG and to any visiting gastroenterologist. He was a courageous and a man of principles, when the new government took over in 1989 they tried to impose staff and people of dubious standards in the staff of Ibn Sina Hospital. He protested and later wrote his resignation in a very eloquent manner: 74 71
