3 ABOUT THE FSDC CAREER DAY 1 About the FSDC Career Day The financial services industry is one of the key employers of talent in Hong Kong today with about 250,000 participants in the industry, contributing 6.6% of employment and one-sixth of Hong Kong s GDP. University graduates are well positioned to fully grasp the various career opportunities arising from Hong Kong s position as an international financial centre. The FSDC Career Day will provide a useful platform to understand the different jobs and segments within the financial services industry through experience-sharing by leading practitioners. Speakers will also offer practical tips on job search and how to get prepared for a career in finance.

6 4 ABOUT THE FSDC About the FSDC The Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) was established by the HKSAR Government in January 2013 in response to the financial services industry s call for a high-level government advisory body to support the sustained development of the industry. The FSDC engages the industry and formulates proposals to promote the further development of Hong Kong s financial services industry and map out the strategic direction for the development of Hong Kong as an international financial centre. It acts as a focal point of views and melting pot of ideas, as a champion and ambassador of the industry, and as a capacity builder. The FSDC s work is underpinned by the five Committees established, namely, Policy Research; Mainland Opportunities; New Business; Market Development; and Human Capital. The Committees are engaged in specific areas of the financial services industry in depth, formulate work directions and plans with a view to providing advice and recommendations to the Government. The FSDC aims to: 1. advise the Government on strategies and measures to expand the scope of our financial markets and enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong as an international financial centre; 2. provide a channel for stakeholders to express views and champion the interests of the financial services industry; 3. support the financial services industry in developing the core competence and knowledge of its practitioners; and 4. promote our financial services industry and Hong Kong as an international financial centre on the Mainland and overseas.

7 BIOGRAPHIES OF SPEAKERS 5 OPENING REMARKS What is a career in finance The Hon Mrs Laura M CHA Chairman Financial Services Development Council Non-Executive Deputy Chairman The Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited Mrs Cha is a member of the Executive Council of the Government of Hong Kong, Chairman of the Financial Services Development Council, Hong Kong, a Non-Executive Director of HSBC Holdings plc., Non-Executive Deputy Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and a Non-Executive Director of China Telecom Corporation Limited and Unilever plc. She is also a Senior International Advisor of Foundation Assets Management AB, and a member of Sotheby s International Advisory Board. Mrs Cha became the first, and to-date the only person outside the Mainland China to join the Central Government at the vice- ministerial rank in January 2001 when she was appointed as Vice Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC). She served in such capacity until September Mrs Cha was Deputy Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong where she worked from 1991 to She practiced law in the 1980 s in San Francisco and Hong Kong. Mrs Cha is also a Hong Kong Delegate to the 12th National People s Congress of China, and Vice Chairman of the International Advisory Council of CSRC. Mrs Cha earned a BA degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a JD degree from the Santa Clara University. She was awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star in 2001 and a Gold Bauhinia Star in 2009 by the Hong Kong Government for her public service.

8 6 BIOGRAPHIES OF SPEAKERS KEYNOTE ADDRESS My story, career path and key lessons to learn Mr Charles Li Chief Executive Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited Mr Charles Li has served as Chief Executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) since In this role, Mr Li has orchestrated some of the most significant strategic initiatives in HKEX s history, including the expansion into fixed income, currency and commodities through the acquisition of the London Metal Exchange in 2012 and the launch of OTC Clear in 2013, as well as enhanced mutual market access with Mainland China through Shanghai and Shenzhen (in preparation) Stock Connect Programmes and other cooperation. Mr Li s career in financial services spans over 20 years. Before joining HKEX, he was Chairman of JP Morgan China, prior to which he was President of Merrill Lynch China. Before joining Merrill Lynch in 1994, Mr Li practiced law in New York with Davis Polk & Wardwell and Brown & Wood. Before moving to the US for his studies, Mr Li had worked as an offshore oil worker in the North China Sea, and as a newspaper editor-reporter for China Daily from Mr Li obtained a BA degree in English Literature from Xiamen University of China in 1984, a MA degree in journalism from the University of Alabama in 1988, and a JD degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1991.

10 8 BIOGRAPHIES OF SPEAKERS PANEL 1: Career in Finance Commercial Banking Mr Daisuke Kitamura Managing Director Head of Global Banking, Hong Kong Global Banking and Markets, HSBC Mr Daisuke Kitamura assumed the role of Managing Director, Head of Global Banking, Hong Kong in July In this role he is responsible for the global coverage of the Bank s major Hong Kong client relationships within Conglomerates Sector. The focus is to ensure the full alignment of the relationship management and product functions to deliver high quality service and innovative solutions to the client base. Aside from leading several core financing transactions for clients, across capital markets (bonds, equities and equity linked), project financing, structured tax financing and syndicated loans, Daisuke has also been involved across several notable M&A transactions within the Financial Institutions, Industrials and Real Estate sector. Daisuke joined HSBC in 1994 and has spent his career entirely within Global Banking. During this period he has worked within the Multinationals sector, Industrials, FIG and more recently Conglomerates. He is a graduate of Northwestern University, Illinois with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and is married with four children.

12 10 BIOGRAPHIES OF SPEAKERS PANEL 1: Career in Finance Investment Banking Mr Mervyn Chow Co-Head of Investment Banking and Capital Markets, APAC Credit Suisse Mr Mervyn Chow is a Managing Director and Co-Head of the Investment Banking & Capital Markets department (IBCM) in the Asia Pacific Division at Credit Suisse, based in Hong Kong. Mr Chow is responsible for IBCM, including the sector and country corporate coverage groups, Mergers & Acquisitions and Capital Markets. He is a member of the APAC Division Operating Committee and has also served as a member of the Managing Director Evaluation Committee (MDEC). Previously, he was Head of the Global Markets Solutions Group (GMSG) in Asia Pacific, overseeing the Equity Capital Markets, Debt Capital Markets, Convertibles and Equity Derivatives functions in the region. Mr Chow joined Credit Suisse in 1998 and, over the years, has been responsible for many key client coverage and landmark capital markets transactions in the region. From 1995 to 1998, Mr Chow worked for BZW Asia Limited, which was acquired by Credit Suisse First Boston. Mr Chow received his B.A. in Economics (Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. in International Policies from Stanford University.

14 12 BIOGRAPHIES OF SPEAKERS PANEL 1: Career in Finance Digital Finance and Entrepreneurship Mr Simon Loong Founder and CEO WeLab Mr Simon Loong is the Founder and CEO of WeLab, Asia s leading internet finance company. WeLab operates Wolaidai ( 我來貸 ), one of China s largest mobile lending platforms, and WeLend, Hong Kong s leading online lending platform. An entrepreneur at heart, Simon founded WeLab after working in the banking industry for over 18 years. WeLab has sourced more than US$4.9 billion in loan applications since launching in In January 2016, WeLab announced a US$160 million (RMB1 billion) Series B fundraising from a stellar consortium of international and domestic Chinese investors, including Khazanah Nasional Berhad, ING Bank and state-owned Guangdong Technology Financial Group (GTFG). This financing represented the first-ever fundraising by a Chinese financial technology firm from both an international bank and government investors, and also one of the first financings of an international financial institution in a leading Chinese fintech player. This Series B fundraising followed the completion of a US$20 million Series A round in January 2015 from a group of strategic and financial investors, including CK Hutchison s TOM Group, Sequoia Capital, Yuri Milner (Founder of DST Global), ICONIQ Capital, and Ule.com, a joint venture between China Post Group, China s state-owned postal service

15 13 and the TOM Group, which enabled WeLab to launch new products in Mainland China and solidify its credit risk modelling capabilities with big data solutions. Prior to founding WeLab, Simon was the North East Asia Regional Head of Unsecured Lending at Standard Chartered Bank, where he was responsible for managing the bank s credit card and consumer lending business in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. In this capacity, Simon was also appointed to the Management Committee of its Consumer Banking business. Before joining Standard Chartered Bank, Simon held various senior positions at Citibank in the Asia-Pacific region, with his most recent position being Senior Vice President and Credit Card Marketing Director for Citibank Taiwan, where under his leadership, the division became the most profitable credit card issuer in Taiwan. Simon has a Masters of Science in Management (MSM) from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He was awarded Silicon Dragon s Entrepreneur Achievement Award in 2014.

16 14 BIOGRAPHIES OF SPEAKERS PANEL 1: Moderator Mr Joe Ngai Senior Partner and Managing Partner McKinsey & Company Hong Kong Mr Joe Ngai is a Senior Partner and the Managing Partner of McKinsey s Hong Kong office. He also leads McKinsey s Financial Institutions practice in Greater China. He has led many large-scale transformation efforts for local as well as multi-national financial institutions, as well as local Hong Kong conglomerates. He has advised on various topics including strategy, operations transformation, mergers & acquisitions, organization transformation, etc. He is the co-author of two editions of Life Insurance in Asia (2008 and 2012), a leading publication in its field. He speaks frequently on financial, management and social enterprise topics. Mr Ngai is passionate about community service. He is the Chairman of DiamondCab, an award-winning social enterprise focusing on barrierfree taxi services, Director of Social Ventures Hong Kong, Deputy Convener of 30SGroup, Director of Diocesan Boys School Foundation and President of Harvard Business School Association of Hong Kong. He has been appointed to various Government advisory committees, including the Financial Services Development Council, the Antiquities Advisory Board, the Advisory Committee to the Revitalization of Historic Buildings and the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme. A HK native, Mr Ngai received his A.B. in economics from Harvard University as well as his JD and MBA from Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School.

17 BIOGRAPHIES OF SPEAKERS 15 PANEL 2: Moderator Ms Bonnie Chan Partner Davis Polk & Wardwell Ms Bonnie Chan is a partner in Davis Polk s Corporate Department, resident in Hong Kong. Her practice includes advising issuers and underwriters on capital markets transactions and advising on securities, corporate and governance matters, generally. Before joining the firm in 2010, Ms Chan served as a senior vice president of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, where she led the IPO Transactions Department of the Listing Division. Previously, she was an in-house counsel at Morgan Stanley, where she was responsible for overseeing their capital markets transactions in Asia. Ms Chan was appointed as a council member of the Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR in She has been a member of the FSDC's Policy Research Committee since 2013 and was also appointed as a member of the Hong Kong Government s Standing Committee to the Company Law Reform. Ms Chan is consistently recognized for her work in the legal industry by leading legal publications, including Chambers Asia-Pacific, Chambers Global, IFLR1000 and Legal 500. In 2014, Ms Chan was named All-Star Lawyer" in Banking & Finance by The Asian Lawyer.

19 BIOGRAPHIES OF SPEAKERS 17 CLOSING REMARKS The Hon John C Tsang, GBM, JP Financial Secretary, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Mr Tsang spent his secondary school years in La Salle College in Hong Kong and Stuyvesant High School in New York City. He pursued his interest in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and went on to receive a Master Degree in Bilingual Education from Boston State College and a Master Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University s Kennedy School of Government. Mr Tsang worked in the Boston Public Schools prior to joining the Hong Kong civil service in November As a member of the Administrative Service, he served in a number of posts in the Government, including Director General of the London Economic and Trade Office, Commissioner of Customs and Excise, Secretary for Planning and Lands and Permanent Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands (Planning and Lands). Mr Tsang was appointed Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology in August He chaired the successfully concluded World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong in December He was appointed Director of the Chief Executive s Office in January 2006 and has been serving as Financial Secretary since 1 July Mr Tsang is married with two children.
