1 March 6th, 2018 Dear Speaker Ryan, We are writing to ask you to work to protect our public lands. As Wisconsin local elected officials, we know the value public lands bring to our communities. Whether it s the Ice Age Trail, a county park, or the state and federal lands in Wisconsin and across the country where we hunt, hike, fish, and boat, these are the beautiful places that improve the quality of life in our communities, generate significant economic value, and help us build memories with our families. We know the value of public lands to vibrant, healthy communities. We know that public lands energize our economies. In fact, in Wisconsin alone, our $12 billion outdoor recreation industry, including our $4 billion hunting and fishing industries, depend on public access to our shared public lands. We are concerned about recent attempts by Congress and the White House to significantly reduce resources and protections for public lands and are asking for your help, not just as a Wisconsin member of Congress, but as the Speaker of the House and the influence you carry in that role. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke has already recommended a rollback of our National Monuments, a dangerous and extreme move that we ask you to oppose. Here in Wisconsin, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has provided approximately $212 million to Wisconsin to protect places like the Ice Age Trail, Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, St. Croix National Scenic River, and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Congress must fully restore funding for LWCF, America s best parks program, to the authorized level of $900 million. As Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, we urge you to lead Congress in a pro-parks and public lands agenda. In addition to fully funding LWCF this year, Congress should permanently reauthorize LWCF before it expires in September Congress should also protect our national parks and monuments from corporate special interests and preserve existing presidential authority under the Antiquities Act to protect places of natural, cultural, or scientific significance. Thank you for looking out for the communities we represent.
