2 SPEAKERS AND MODERATORS (in order of program agenda) Marguerite Gong Hancock is the Associate Director of the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE), an interdisciplinary and international research program at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Educated at Harvard University, Brigham Young University, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Hancock joined Stanford in She leads SPRIE research initiatives, conferences, and publications on topics ranging from China 2.0 to Smart Green Cities to The Next Silicon Valley. Hancock has served as an advisor or lecturer to policy makers and executives from Beijing to Barcelona, Silicon Valley to Singapore. She has lectured for Harvard University, Tsinghua University, IESE, and others; she has delivered keynotes or conference addresses in more than a dozen countries. Hancock is co-editor of three books published by Stanford: The Silicon Valley Edge (2000), Making IT: Asia s Rise in High Tech (2006), and Greater China s Quest for Innovation (2008). Currently, she is co-authoring a book on the drivers and global implications of the rise of China s internet industry. Passionate about education, Hancock mentors students and serves as a member of the Stanford Entrepreneurship Network. She also teaches in executive education courses and co-directs an education program for international policy makers at Stanford, Leading Innovative and Entrepreneurial Regions in the Global Economy. Henry S. Rowen is faculty co-director of SPRIE, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, a professor of public policy and management emeritus at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, and a senior fellow emeritus of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. Rowen is an expert on international security, economic development, and high tech industries in the United States and Asia. His current research focuses on the rise of Asia in high technologies. In 2004 and 2005, Rowen served on the Presidential Commission on the Intelligence of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction. From 2001 to 2004, he served on the Secretary of Defense Policy Advisory Board. Rowen was assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs in the U.S. Department of Defense from 1989 to He was also chairman of the National Intelligence Council from 1981 to Rowen served as president of the RAND Corporation from 1967 to 1972, and was assistant director of the U.S. Bureau of the Budget from 1965 to Rowen most recently co-edited Greater China's Quest for Innovation (Shorenstein APARC, 2008). He also co-edited Making IT: The Rise of Asia in High Tech (Stanford University Press, 2006) and The Silicon Valley Edge: A Habitat for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (2000). Rowen's other books include Prospects for Peace in South Asia (edited with Rafiq Dossani) and Behind East Asian Growth: The Political and Social Foundations of Prosperity(1998). Rowen holds degrees from MIT and Oxford. William Perry is the Chairman of the US Secretary of Energy Advisory Board. He is also Michael and Barbara Berberian Professor (emeritus) at Stanford University. He is a senior fellow at FSI and serves as co-director of the Nuclear Risk Reduction initiative and the Preventive Defense Project. He is an expert in U.S. foreign policy, national security and arms control. Perry was the 19th secretary of defense for the United States, serving from February 1994 to January Dr. Perry currently serves on the Defense Policy Board (DPB) and the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board (SEAB). He is on the board of directors of Covant, Fabrinet, LGS Bell Labs Innovations and several emerging high-tech companies. His previous business experience includes serving as a laboratory director for General Telephone and Electronics ( ); founder and president of ESL Inc. ( ); executive vice-president of Hambrecht & Quist Inc. ( ); and founder and chairman of Technology Strategies & Alliances ( ). He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Perry was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1997 and the Knight Commander of the British Empire in 1998 and numerous other awards, including the American Electronic Association's Medal of Achievement (1980), the Eisenhower Award (1996), the Marshall Award (1997), the Forrestal Medal (1994), and the Henry Stimson Medal (1994). The National Academy of Engineering selected him for the Arthur Bueche Medal in He has received awards from the enlisted personnel of the Army, Navy, and the Air Force. He has received decorations from the governments of Albania, Bahrain, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Poland, Slovenia, and Ukraine. He received a BS and MS from Stanford University and a PhD from Pennsylvania State University, all in mathematics. Cliff Thomas is a Managing Director in the Cisco Global Enterprise Theatre responsible for business development and route to market efforts for Cisco s Smart+Connected Communities (S+CC) focus on intelligent urbanization. His global team is responsible for creating value for Cisco s clients, governments, and ecosystems partners in delivering Cisco s S+CC solutions, which include Education, Health & Wellness, Transportation, Residential, Retail, Hospitality, Sports & Entertainment, Utilities and Government. Cliff Thomas is a graduate from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and minor in Economics. Additional engineering thesis work on Pneumatic Wave Energy Conversion was completed at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland with a focus on sustainability.

3 Jung-hoon (John) Lee is a visiting scholar with the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE), Stanford Graduate School of Business since September He is also currently an associate professor at the Graduate School of Information (GSI), Yonsei University in Seoul. Lee s recent research focuses on Smart Green City, specially the IT-based service design and implementation in urban planning and development. He has been involved in R&D projects sponsored by the South Korean government, including developing a national strategy and vision for Smart City, analyzing and designing Smart City services and implementation with the LG CNS, and developing Performance Management Systems for Smart City operations. Active in leading the development of 5-year master plans for smart cities, he served as associate project manager for Seoul and currently is working with Busan, South Korea s second largest metropolis. As a scholar in technology, operations and information management, Lee has published in R&D Management, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Information Systems Management, the Global Economic Review, the Information Systems Review, the Journal of Service Sciences, Expert Systems and Applications, International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing and International Journal of Production Research. Lee received a B.Eng./MSc. from the University of Manchester and MSc from the London School of Economics and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining the GSI faculty at Yonsei University, he worked for LG CNS as a senior business/it consultant in IT Governance & Management. Ko-Yang Wang is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Executive Vice President for Business Development at the Institute for Information Industry (III). Dr. Wang is responsible for strategy, business development, strategic industry partnership, and technical vitality for III. Before joining III in Feb. 2011, he was a partner and the BPM (Business Process Management) Practice Leader for IBM Global Business Services. He served as CTO for various IBM organizations, including the Enterprise Architecture & Technology and the Enterprise Integration Practices, and the Industrial Sector of IBM Global Business Services. He served as the Research & Innovation Executive for Business Transformation, IBM Global Services from 2001 to He led the Enterprise of the Future effort from and more than 20 other company-wide crossdiscipline task forces and strategic initiatives during his career with IBM. He was an IBM Distinguished Engineer and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. Dr. Wang specializes in business development, business process/performance management and transformation, enterprise integration, enterprise architecture, SOA, ERP, real-time event processing, innovation management, asset reuse and knowledge management. He worked with clients in the automotive, chemical & petroleum, electronics, financial, insurance, government, pharmaceutical, and telecom industries. Dr. Wang received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science from Purdue University, and an M.S. and B.S. in Math from Tsing-Hua University. William F. Miller has spent about half of his professional life in business and about half in academia. Now faculty co-director of the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Dr. Miller served as Vice President and Provost of Stanford and faculty member and advisor to many computer science graduate students as well as Herbert Hoover Professor of Public and Private Management in the Stanford Graduate School of Business Prior to his roles at Stanford, he was Director of the Applied Mathematics Division at the Argonne National Laboratory. In 1968 Dr. Miller played a role in the founding of the first Mayfield Fund (venture capital) as a special limited partner and advisor to the general partners. He also served as President and CEO of SRI International. He has served on the board of directors of many companies and currently is Founder/Chairman of Nanostellar Inc., and Founder/Chairman of Lumiette, Inc.. Miller was appointed to the National Science Board. Dr. Miller is a Life Member of the National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Life Fellow of IEEE. He has received numerous awards, including the Okawa Prize, DongBaeg Medal from Republic of Korea, Member of the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame, David Packard Civic Entrepreneur Award. In 2009, Konkuk University in Seoul established the William F. Miller School of Management of Technology and appointed Miller honorary Dean. Miller received BS, MS, PhD, and Honorary DSc from Purdue University. James (Jim) Sweeney is Director of the Precourt Energy Efficiency Center; Professor of Management Science and Engineering; Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research; Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace; and Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute for International Studies. at Stanford University. His professional activities focus on economic policy and analysis, particularly in energy, natural resources, and the environment. At Stanford he has served as chairman of the Department of Engineering-Economic Systems, chairman of the Department of Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research, Director of the Energy Modeling Forum, Chairman of the Institute for Energy Studies, and Director of the Center for Economic Policy Research (now the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research). In the early 1970s he was Director of the Office of Energy Systems Modeling and Forecasting of the U.S. Federal Energy Administration. He was a founding member of the International Association for Energy Economics, co-editor of the Journal Resource and Energy Economics, and vice-president for publications of the International Association for Energy Economics. He is a Senior Fellow of the U.S. Association for Energy Economics and a Fellow of the California Council on Science and Technology. He is on the National Advisory Council of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and a member of Governor Schwarzenegger's Council of Economic Advisors. He holds a B.S. degree from MIT in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Engineering-Economic Systems. Chintay Shih is Dean of the College of Technology Management, National Tsinghua University and he also serves as the Chairman of the Institute for Information Industry (III). and former President, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University, MS in management from Stanford University, and his BS. from National Taiwan University. He joined ITRI in 1976, and became part of the original 40 person team that transferred the CMOS process from RCA New Jersey to Taiwan. He spent 28 years at ITRI, culminating in serving as president from While at ITRI, Dr. Shih played key roles in the spin-off United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Vanguard Semiconductor (VIS), and Taiwan Mask Company (TMC). Dr. Shih established ITRI s open laboratory program and initiated the Advanced Research Program. In 2004, Dr Shih joined National Tsing Hua University as Dean of the College of Technology Management. He set up the first Institute of Service Science in Taiwan (2007) Dr. Shih is a Fellow of IEEE. He has served as chairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Association, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Intellectual Property Association, President of the Chinese Institute of Engineers, Chairman of the Chinese Society for Management of Technology, Chairman of the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering, Managing director of the Taiwan Electrical and Electronics Manufactures' Association, and Chairman of Taiwan Monte jade Science & technology Association. Dr. Shih also served as a Technology Advisor to the Executive Yuan of the government of Taiwan and member of Economics advisory committee to the Vice President of Taiwan.

4 Sven A. Beiker, is Executive Director, Center for Automotive Research at Stanford School of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering. His interests center on the future of the automobile and personal mobility, vehicle dynamics, driver assistance, powertrain systems, innovation & consumer aspects, and industry partnerships. Since 2008 Dr. Beiker has been overseeing the strategic planning, resources management, and project incubation for the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS). Besides managing the industry relationships, he holds teaching positions at Stanford's School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Business. He was instrumental in launching research programs at Stanford University in "Legal Aspects of Autonomous Driving" and "Wireless Power Transfer to a Moving Vehicle" as well as "The Revs Program at Stanford" and the "Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab". Before coming to Stanford, Dr. Beiker worked at the BMW Group for more than 13 year where his responsibilities included technology scouting, innovation management, systems design, and series development. He holds several patents in chassis and powertrain technologies. Kung Wang is a chaired Professor of the Department of Business Administration in the China University of Technology in Taiwan. From , he served as a professor teaching industrial economics and management at National Central University. Since 1980 has participated in the International Motor Vehicle Program (IMVP) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; a collaborator with the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE) since 2000; the Small Countries Innovation and Competitiveness project of Lund University in the 2000s; and the Participant Centered Learning and Case Teaching Program at Harvard since Dr. Wang has held numerous Taiwanese governmental positions, including advisor to the NSC, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the CEPD, the MoTC, the DGoSB. He was appointed by the President in 1992 to be a commissioner of the newly established Fair Trade Commission. In 1996 Dr. Wang was appointed Director General of HsinChu Science Park to promote high-tech industry. development. He also serves as the Director of the Boards for state-owned enterprises, venture capital funds, as well as for leading private companies. His current research is focused on regional innovation and entrepreneurship, competitive strategy and industrial policy. Dr. Wang received a BS and a MS from the Department of Civil Engineering of National Taiwan University. He holds a PhD degree from MIT. David Lee is a PhD candidate in Urban Studies and Planning at MIT, and conducts research at the Senseable City Laboratory. His work focuses on collective problem solving using real-time information systems, and transforming public discourse on critical urban issues with digital technology. His current interests include crowdsourced infrastructures and urban innovation districts. He has contributed as programmer and analyst to projects, such astrash Track (electronically tracking movement of trash in the city using GPS and cell phone networks), MIT Enernet (improving building energy efficiency using location awareness of wi-fi network usage; mapping flows of energy and people in 3D space), Live Singapore (combining real-time data streams from diverse sensor and communication networks; building an urban-scale information exchange platform to open this data to the public). Lee holds a BS in Physics and MA in City Planning from MIT. He has worked with the International Economic Development Council in Washington DC and the Los Angeles Department of City Planning. As a Fulbright Scholar, he conducted research and instructed courses in urban design in Seoul and currently teaches the Digital City Design Workshop at MIT. He has also contributed to master plans for the Seoul Digital Media City and the Olympic stadium redevelopment. Jeffrey Heller, FAIA is President of Heller Manus Architects. He founded the firm in He is a leader in the profession and green movement with some of the first sustainable architecture and large scale urban planning projects in the US and China, including the first LEED Gold office towers in San Francisco and Shanghai; the first LEED Platinum neighborhood development master plan; and sustainable/livable master plans for Guangzhou's North and South Axes, Shanghai's Yangpu Waterfront, and Ulanhot, Inner Mongolia. His work in China often now involves high speed rail land use implications. Jeffrey serves on several boards, including the Bay Area Council, Asia Society, Green Growth Leaders' Council (based in Copenhagen), ChinaSF Advisory Board, ULI Leadership Council, Past President of California Architects Board and of AsiaSF, Bay Bridge Design Advisory Panel, and Lambda Alpha International Honorary Land Use Organization. Jeffrey is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He holds BS and MS degrees in Architecture and Urban Design from MIT. Robert Yang is a Senior Advisor with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). Bob joined ITRI in 1986, first as its Vice President and General Director for the Energy and Resources Laboratories (ERL) and then its Executive Vice President. He later joined Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company (ASTRI) as Chief Executive Officer, where he retired in Since then he has served as senior advisor to ITRI and was appointed by the Premier as an Executive Affairs Advisor for the Executive Yuan. He was also appointed advisor by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) on energy and climate change matters. In addition, he also serves as advisor as well as director on Boards of companies in the private sector. Throughout his career, Bob has been involved closely with Taiwan s energy and climate change technology and policy, both as ITRI s overall supervisor on all energy technologies and as a member of both Taiwan s National Energy Committee and National Sustainable Development Committee. He was a Managing Director of the Chinese Petroleum Corporation (CPC), and Chairman of Taiwan s Solar Energy Society and Combustion Institute. He was also the founding Executive Director of Taiwan s National Nanotechnology Program and an Honorary Professor of the National Chiao Tung University. He earned his PhD degree at the University of Washington. Brian Carey is a Principal based in San Jose and leads PwC's US Cleantech Advisory practice. He has over 18 years of experience leading projects in market entry, operations strategy, supply chain, product innovation, customer operations, and sustainability. He has worked across many industries, including cleantech, semiconductors, electronics, telecommunications, consumer products, and industrial products. He has acted as a strategic advisor to multiple cleantech industry executives, organized several cleantech networking events. and published numerous articles on the solar industry. Prior to the PRTM-PwC merger in 2011, Brian worked in PRTM s Energy Business Group, where he launched and built the firm s global renewables practice. Brian holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees from Cornell University and an MBA with high distinction from the University of Michigan s Ross Business School.

5 Dennis Bracy is the Chief Executive Officer, of the US-China Clean Energy Forum. He also serves as Chairman of Avatar Studios; advises companies on political and public affairs; and chairs the Washington State China Relations Council. Combining a long-time commitment to strengthening US-China relations and a passion for finding solutions to global energy and environmental issues, Bracy has led the US team for the US-China Clean Energy Forum since the inception of the organization in Over the past 20 years, he has served as a key advisor to senators, governors and members of the US Congress and is considered a leading strategist on political and public affairs issues. As Chairman of Avatar Studios, he heads a company that produces television programs for clients around the world. In the early 1990s, Bracy led the team that developed the first prime-time television co-produced by foreigners in China and he continues to produce several documentaries and videos in China every year. His previous professional positions include president of Hill & Knowlton Technology, vice president of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation, and press secretary for the Watergate trials. Rex Northern is Executive Director of the CleanTech Open, the world's largest clean technology business competition. As founder and CEO of technology companies in both Europe and the United States, Rex is an entrepreneur with a long history of building and managing technology companies and successful teams. He has worked with hundreds of diverse companies, ranging from startups to global corporations. Rex has led the Cleantech Open since January 2009, overseeing the growth of the California-based nonprofit from its Bay Area roots to a national organization with regional operations based in Silicon Valley, Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis and Boston. He has also directed the establishment of the Global Cleantech Open in partnership with the Kauffman Foundation. Northern holds an MA with Honors from Oxford University. Stephen Su is the General Director of the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). Prior to joining ITRI in 2009, he was Executive Director of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in Shanghai. He has worked as senior director at Primax Electronics, a Taiwan-based firm engaged in the IT ODM business; an engineer at Motorola, a case team leader at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and semiconductor engineer at Motorola. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from University of California, Berkeley; MS in Electrical Engineering from California Institute of Technology, and MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. The Smart Green Cities project is led by the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE). Established in 1998, SPRIE is dedicated to improving the understanding and practice of innovation and entrepreneurship in leading geographic centers in the global economy.
