Look at one last strumming pattern that uses muting in this lesson. In this lesson, learn: another strumming pattern that uses the muting technique a song: ive Years Time how to do fast sixteenth note strums You need to know the following chords: To play a major chord, place your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the bottom string. The remaining strings ring completely open. To play a major chord, place your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the bottom string, your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the second string, and your index finger on the 2nd fret of the third string. The top string rings completely open. 1
To play an major chord, place your index finger on the 1st fret of the second string and your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the top string or the fourth string. Let the first and third string ring completely open. Strumming Pattern #11 Like the last strumming pattern, stick with all eighth note strums. However, this time just mute the strings on beats two and four of the measure. Here s what the strumming pattern looks like: As always, practice this strumming pattern slow at first, and as you start to feel comfortable, speed it up and then add a chord change in for practice. 2
Adding Sixteenth Notes to Strumming Pattern #11 In this lesson, you re going to learn a new song called ive Years Time by Noah and the Whale. The chord progression for this song repeats over and over again. If you look at the chord chart for the song below, you ll see the chords that it repeats over and over again are:,,, and. If you look up the song on YouTube and listen to it, you ll notice that at the end of the chord progression, on the last chord, there are a couple fast sixteenth note strums. The entire chord progression with the sixteenth note strums looks like this: At a first listen, the sixteenth notes might seem a bit intimidating to play. However, if you slow this entire chord progression down and count out loud, it can help you successfully play the rhythm. And then, once you get comfortable, speed it up. When you ve got that down, you ve essentially learned the whole song! 3
ive Years Time chords This is definitely a wordy song. The most challenging part will be to sing it! As I said before, the chord progression above stays the exact same through the whole song. It never changes. Intro: verse 1: Oh well in five years time we could be walking round a zoo With the sun shining down over me and you And there'll be love in the bodies of the elephants too And I'll put my hands over your eyes, but you'll peep through And there'll be sun, sun, sun All over our bodies And sun, sun, sun All down our necks And there ll be sun, sun, sun All over our faces And sun, sun, sun So what the heck 4
verse 2:!! ause I'll be laughing at all your silly little jokes!! And we'll be laughing about how we used to smoke!!!!!!! All those stupid little cigarettes and drink stupid wine!!!!! ause it's what we needed to have a good time!!! And it was fun, fun, fun!! When we were drinking!! It was fun, fun, fun!! When we were drunk! And it was fun, fun, fun!! When we were laughing!!! It was fun, fun, fun! Oh it was fun (repeat for rest of the song) verse 3: Oh well I look at you and say it's the happiest that I've ever been And I'll say I no longer feel I have to be James Dean And she'll say, Yah well I feel all pretty happy too And I'm always pretty happy when I'm just kicking back with you And there'll be love, love, love All through our bodies And love, love, love All through our minds 5
And there'll be love, love, love All over her face And love, love, love All over mine verse 4: Although maybe all these moments are just in my head I'll be thinking about them as I'm lying in bed And all that I believe might never really come true But in my mind I'm having a pretty good time with you Oh, five years time I might not know you ive years time We might not speak Oh, in five years time We might not get along In five years time You might just prove me wrong Oh there ll be love, love, love there ll be love 6
Practice Objectives ocus your practice on these things before you move to the next lesson: learn strumming pattern #11 experiment with adding sixteenth note strums on the last chord of the progression above learn the chord progression for ive Years Time keep practicing the rhythm exercises every day Once you got this down, it s time to learn some other songs you ve got to know how to play on the ukulele. See you in the next lesson! 7
