Yanaguana AMES e-chord Introduction e-chord is a strategy boardgame for 2-4 players which plays in approximately minutes. Each player is a budding guitarist for one of the various genres of music. e-chord incorporates real guitar picks and chords into a fun tabletop game. uitarists have to use cunning and clever strategies to become the most popular guitarist of all time. 3 Setup 1. Set the e-chord laymat in the center of the play area & choose a starting guitarist. 2. andomly deal one ENE card to each guitarist face down. This card is the color of pick you will score. Keep your ENE and color hidden from other guitarists. Keep any remaining ENE cards hidden and remove them from the game. 3. Deal three CHOD cards to each guitarist. Each guitarist may view their own CHOD cards but remember to keep them hidden from other guitarists until completed. 4. lace all 25 of the black backed guitar picks into the black bag. Add yldes (rainbow picks) equal to one more than the player count to the black bag and mix thoroughly. (In a 4 player game, use 5 ylde picks) 5. Draw picks equal to one more than the player count from the bag and place them to the side of the board to create the public pick pile for the first turn. (In a 3 player game, draw 4 picks. ith 2 players, draw 3 picks, etc..) Four player setup example: In the example below the chord card deck has been placed on the fifth fret to remind guitarists that it s not in play. If you are playing an expansion that uses the fifth fret, set the chord card deck to the side of the board. 4 ules Overview In e-chord players are guitarists attempting to gain the most popularity by playing beautiful music infused with the essence of their (secret) ENE. uitarists can also play full CHODS to score popularity and if they are able to repeat the same chord more than once in a session they ll gain an even larger boost. The way guitarists accomplish these tasks is by taking one of three actions each turn. uitarists will fill the fretboard with real guitar picks over the course of the game using their actions. Filling each fret with picks for the first time will trigger four separate popularity scoring opportunities. After the final fret is scored the game ends. Actions A guitarist may take ONE of the following three actions during their turn: 1. Take one pick from the public pick pile and place it face up on any available string & fret. The guitarist who placed the pick MAY then carry out the action of that pick s power if desired. 2. Take one pick from the bag, view it privately and place it face down on any available string & fret. The guitarist who placed the pick MAY then remove an adjacent pick from the same fret this face down pick was placed in. If a pick is removed in this way, it goes back into the bag. 3. Take additional Chord cards. A guitarist may draw two chord cards from the deck. uitarists may keep both cards and may return any number of unfinished chord cards to the deck during this phase. The maximum number of unfinished of chord cards a guitarist can have is THEE. uitarists with three action cards MAY take this action.
ick Abilities Activating a pick ability after a pick is placed is optional. B? hite - Take another pick from the public pile and place it on an available space (face up). The active guitarist MAY activate that pick s ability. ed - emove any other pick from the fretboard and place it back into the bag. A red pick cannot remove itself when placed. Blue - Move or swap any other pick to a new available space. uitarists may move one pick to a new available space O swap two other pick s current spaces. rey - Turn any pick on the fretboard face down. Then you MAY move the pick that was just turned face down to a new available string and fret. urple - luck any face down pick on the fret board, turning it over to reveal its color. A guitarist MAY choose to immediately use the ability of the revealed pick. ylde - Can be placed anywhere on the fretboard & may replace any other pick & put in the bag. yldes count as all colors & face down for all guitarists when completing chord cards. Face Down - uitarists MAY remove an adjacent pick on the same fret after placing the face down pick. Turn Order Overview Turns in e-chord are taken in clockwise order meaning the guitarist to your left should follow you. Starting with the first guitarist each player takes one action per turn. Once a guitarist has taken their action in a turn two things happen: 1. Check for any filled frets which trigger a scoring round. Each fret can only trigger scoring once. 2. The public pick pile is refilled to one more than the player count by drawing picks from the bag. icks placed in the public pick pile are always placed face up so players can see their color. The public pick pile is only refilled at the end of each player s turn. icks taken from the public pick pile MUST be placed face up, however all pick power abilities are optional to carry out. Turns continue until the final fret is scored, at which point the game ends.
Chord Cards uitarists may increase their popularity over the course of the game by completing CHOD cards from their hands. To begin the game each guitarist will be dealt three CHOD cards. In addition to the starting three cards guitarists may use the Draw two CHOD CADS action on their turn to draw two CHOD cards from the top of the deck. The maximum number of CHOD cards a guitarist may keep in their hand is THEE. It is important to note that a guitarist may keep any number of the drawn cards from the CHOD card action; and may discard any of their current CHOD cards to meet the required hand limit of THEE. Completing CHOD cards or playing chords is accomplished at ANY time during ANY guitarists turn. The required pick locations and colors on the card must match the fret board state exactly for the picks noted on the CHOD card. Take into account that wild picks are considered to be any pick color when completing CHOD cards, including face down. There is no limit to how many CHOD cards a guitarist can complete during a turn. Completed CHOD cards are placed face up in the guitarist s tableau. If a guitarist incorrectly attempts to play a chord, shuffle it into the CHOD card deck immediately. (You may wish to ignore this rule for your first game.) Anatomy of a CHOD Card equired ick Locations Chord Name Base Score e-chord Score If a guitarist plays a chord during their turn they may immediately draw a new chord card. If a chord is played during another guitarist s turn, no card is drawn.
e-chord Scores The way guitarists score E-CHOD points is by playing a CHOD card with the same name as one already in their tableau. The E-CHOD score represents a mastery of that CHOD, thus your producer allows you to begin E-CHODIN! In the case of the CHOD example below, the first completion will gain that guitarist four popularity points (outlined in the silver pick); however any subsequent CHOD card completions will gain popularity points based on the golden E-CHOD popularity score. uitarists keep their completed CHOD cards face up in front of them until the end of the game. Matching Chords Example: A guitarist has played three different CHOD Cards during the game which are face up in their tableau. The uitarist will gain 24 popularity (4+11+9) during end game scoring. An important note about card orientation Based on where each guitarist is sitting they will likely want to physically turn their Chord Cards to match the orientation of the board. This is suggested especially for new players or those unfamiliar with a guitar fretboard. The easiest way to check is by ensuring the headstock is on the correct side!
CHOD Card and E-CHOD scoring examples: CHOD CADS In this example a uitarist is able to play a CHOD because each of the picks of the correct color are in the required spaces shown on the card. The completed CHOD Card is placed face up in front of the guitarist who played it. This CHOD is worth four popularity points. layed Chord Cards are permanent and remain regardless of board changes. B e-chording In this example the same guitarist is able to play a second CHOD card later during the game. This card is worth 9 popularity because that is its e-chord value and it matches a Chord this guitarist has already completed. **Any further CHOD card completions by this guitarist will be worth their e-chord values. *Notice that CHOD cards only require the picks shown on the card to be in their correct locations, the blank spaces may contain picks like in this example.
Scoring on the Fretboard The way guitarists score ENE popularity points on the fretboard is by filling each of the frets with six picks. ENE popularity scores are recorded on the top portion of the scoring pad during the game, allowing players to keep track of these scores without revealing their secret ENE. The frets may be scored in any order & picks can be placed on any valid space and fret during the game. Once a fret has been scored it cannot trigger scoring again, but picks can still be moved to & from that fret s spaces. hen a fret is scored record the scores on the corresponding fret on the score pad. uitarists can always check the score pad to see which frets have been scored and how many points a given color currently has. Scoring the fretboard happens when a fret is filled with six picks. Immediately add the totals for each ENE together based on the amount of colored picks on the ENTIE fretboard. The ENE scores are increased when multiple picks of the same color are on the same fret. The point structure for matching picks per fret is shown on the board in ratio form. (1:1 / 2:4 / 3:11 / 4:17 / 5:25) In the base version of e-chord only the FIST FOU FETS are used. It s recommended to place the chord card deck on the fifth fret to remind guitarists it s not available.
Fretboard Scoring Example Spaces that ILL trigger scoring? B? Spaces that will NOT trigger scoring At this point each genre score will be recorded on the top part of the scorepad as shown below: enre SCores total hite ED BLUE EY Urple Final SCoring UITAIST chords re-chod gene total In this example a uitarist is placing the rey pick on the first fret to trigger scoring for the first time in the game (likely giving a clue about their genre). There are seven other legal placements noted by the yellow lines, none of these would trigger scoring since they don t fill the frets. There is one other potential scoring space on the third fret noted by the green lines. This space can trigger scoring if filled but would be filled out under the 3 column to indicate the third fret has been scored. **It s important to note that scoring triggers at the end of a player s turn. If a player removes a pick from the same fret they fill on a single turn they do not trigger scoring.
Ending the ame A guitarist ends a game of e-chord by placing the final scoring pick on the final fret, which is the fourth closed fret in the base game. Once the final fret is filled, the last scoring round will occur and then guitarists reveal their hidden genres. Add each guitarist s CHOD card scores, E-CHOD scores, & ENE score together. The player with the highest total popularity score wins. In case of a tie, the player with the highest toal E-CHOD Score wins. If there is still a tie, the player who played more chord cards wins. If there is still a tie, the guitarists share the stage for victory! End ame Scoring Example:? B? In this example three guitarists are close to finishing a game. Dan, Jenn, and Sean each have their finished CHOD cards in front of them on the table. Jenn is placing a rey pick on the final fret to score the fretboard and end the game. At this point each guitarist reveals their hidden ENE card and adds their CHOD, E-CHOD, & ENE points together. The guitarist with the highest total in this example is Jenn, so she wins the game!
