2 Born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1953, Pat began playing the harmonica at the age of 17. After a couple of years honing his chops hitchhiking all over the United States, Pat joined the Bunny Brooks Band in Denver (an offshoot of the 60 s band Jam Factory ) in In 1978, he impressed Rick Derringer, who told Johnny Winter of this long-haired kid in Denver who played a mean harp! Johnny liked what he heard so much that he hired Pat to play all the harp parts on the album, White Hot and Blue. In late 1978, Pat met Butch Trucks of Allman Brothers fame. After a couple of sizzling jams in Colorado with Butch and his band Trucks, Pat signed on, and made the long move to Tallahassee, Florida. When the Allman Brothers Band reunited in 1979, Butch disbanded Trucks and introduced Pat to a local Tallahassee band called Crosscut Saw. Julian Kasper, a seventeen-year-old guitar prodigy and Pat became partners and the band quickly thinned from seven to four when they decided to take the band on the road. In the next five years, Pat and Crosscut Saw played every juke joint and roadhouse from Key West to Connecticut. They opened for B.B. King (twice), Johnny Winter, Johnny VanZandt, 38 Special, Bobby Bland, the Nighthawks and others. Before disbanding, Crosscut Saw released their album, Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know. In 1985, the Band was formed when Julian opted to study jazz at the graduate level. They opened for many notables as well, including a seven-city tour of Florida (in 1987) with his old friend Johnny Winter. Pat moved to Sarasota, Florida, in 1991, to play with his friend from the Freddie King Band, guitarist Greg Poulos. The Poulos-Ramsey Band was born. Within months they were opening for acts like Charlie Musslewhite, Solomon Burke, Albert Collins, Ronnie Earl, James Cotton and Pinetop Jenkins. Jerry Wexler hailed them as Sarasota s ONLY Blues Band! Two years later, they were ready to make the jump to Memphis, Tennessee. Alas, while Pat was busy scouting gigs in Memphis, tragedy struck Greg s family in Florida, bringing a premature end to this endeavor. A new face in a new city, Pat began dealing Craps in a casino on the muddy Mississippi River, an hour south of Memphis. Jamming on Beale Street on his days off, Pat was quickly accepted by local musicians and was hired to play at the Blues Café as part of the house band. Living out of a trailer in a nearby fishing camp, Pat scrimped and saved for the next two years. With the help of his old friend Julian Kasper (now Professor Julian Kasper of Berklee School of Music, Boston) and some of the best local Memphis musicians, Pat produced the aptly titled CD, It s About Time.

4 Tallahassee,FL Fax: (850) Live at the Grand Review by Tom Townsley, Blues Revue, perhaps best known as Johnny Winter s former harmonica player, has released his second album on his own Rampat label. The set, recorded at The Grand Casino in Gulfport, Mississippi, features Dave Renson on guitars, Steve Howell on drums, Melvin Clemans on bass and David Webb on keyboards. And while his first album, It s About Time, edged into blues-rock that Winter himself would have felt at home with, Live at The Grand maintains a more consistent, bluesier sound. Consistency, indeed, is the key word here. This is no Live at the Regal with sparks flying through each track, but the band is relentlessly solid as it weaves through extended versions of Love Her With a Feeling, One Step at a Time, Chitlins Con Carne, Highway 49, and, yes, Robert Johnson s Dead Shrimp Blues, marking the hot points of the disc, but there are plenty of great moments here. Ramsey is a fine singer; his voice has just the right amount of sand paper grit, and he occasionally goes for gravely inflections like Winter s, but he s tasteful and restrained in their use. His harp playing is effective, with a clear, silvery tone and runs that have just enough flash. Ramsey seems to like triplet patterns that warble between adjacent holes while climbing or descending on the harp, and tends toward clear single notes, with tonguing textures added for good measure. And he s careful not to over play. Fans of harmonica-driven bar blues will find plenty to like in Live at the Grand. Tom Townsley, Blues Revue

5 BAMBOO ROOM (live review) LAKE WORTH, FLORIDA by Peter Lauro Every time I see and the Blues Disciples, I get 'blown away' and 'baffled' at the same time. I'll explain the baffled part later. When I stop and think of the abundance of tremendously talented harp players out there, it confuses me to have to use the term 'favorite' in conjunction with any of their names. However, if I had to narrow down the list, the name PAT RAMSEY would be on it. Pat can blow a harp as well as any of the best I have seen, and combined with his very dynamic, soulful, bluesy vocals, his performances are always memorable. He'll do a rendition of LOVE HER WITH A FEELING that will bring tears to your eyes, then blow you away with I'M ALLERGIC TO WORK. Most bands, during a live performance, will feature a 'follow the leader' type stint between two instruments. Pat, with his long time guitarist and best friend Dave Renson, take such a stint to new levels. Several times during the evening they got into quite extensive exchanges. From the looks on their faces it is very obvious that they are enjoying it and that portions of it have not been rehearsed. They will exchange the lead many times, actually trying to lose the follower, but neither one of them ever misses a note. Taking part in this musical banter seems as enjoyable to them as it is to their audience. Accompanying Pat and Dave are the rhythm section of Dennis Cedeno on bass and Al Piccininni on drums. Together these four gentlemen form one heck of a blues band. As amazed as I am at this bands great performance level and their musical talent, I am as equally baffled as to their obscurity. Sure is best known for his work on the Johnny Winter album WHITE, HOT AND BLUE, but beyond that, he nor his band are getting the recognition they deserve. Unfortunately, they may very well be the blues' best kept secret. This band should be a national touring act, a festival headliner and have their CD's in record stores around the country - I feel they have the necessary credentials. Too bad, some big record company is missing the boat leaving Pat Ramsey and the Blues Disciples unsigned. Check them out if they happen to appear at a venue near you.
