HRH A welcome With this in mind, the directors of The Armorial Register Limited and the outgoing board of Burkes Peerage & Gentry (UK) Ltd have decided that it is now an appropriate time to end our agreement. The Armorial Register Limited will continue to publish its International Register of Arms (entries are now being received for Volume 2) along with its latest project A Celebration of Scottish Heraldry (see the web site for the contributors to this project). A future planned publication is a similar volume to celebrate English Heraldry. We wish the outgoing team at Burke s all the very best for the future. Welcome to the latest Armorial Register Newsletter which is the first since we successfully published Volume 1 of The Register in book format. During September browsers of the website of The Armorial Register will have noticed that a number of changes have taken place, the most important of which is the return of the branding to the now established name of The Armorial Register International Register of Arms. For a number of years The Armorial Register Limited has enjoyed a special relationship with the owners and directors of Burkes Peerage & Gentry (UK) Ltd and has been pleased to licence the name of Burke s Peerage & Gentry for use with its International Register of Arms. Over the last few months Burkes Peerage & Gentry (UK) Ltd has been subjected to negotiations towards a private business sale and this is, as far as the directors of The Armorial Register Limited are aware, progressing towards a successful completion. The sale of Burkes Peerage & Gentry (UK) Ltd will mean a complete change in ownership and therefore management of the Burke s company. Featured Armorial Bearings Graham of Gartmore

Crest: An eagle displayed holding in his dexter talon a sword in pale proper. Supporters: Two lions rampant guardant proper armed and langued Gules. Standard: The crest is depicted three times upon a standard four yards (3.675m) in length with the arms in the hoist, of these liveries, Or, Sable and Or, along with two spurge laurel leaves in the fly, and the motto in letter Argent on two transverse bands Gules. Matriculation: Court of the Lord Lyon (re-matriculation of 1772 arms) dated 17th January The armiger is a direct descendent of Malise, 1st Earl of Menteith (grandson of David, Earl of Strathern - the eldest son of Robert II by his second wife) through his eldest son, John Graham of Port & Monvrachy, from his second marriage; and also a descendant of William, 12th Earl of Glencairn, through his eldest daughter, Lady Margaret Cunningham. From his paternal great-grandmother he can claim descent from Henry VII of England through his daughter, Mary, Dowager Queen of France, and from James V s illegitimate son, James, Earl of Moray, through his paternal grandmother. The family succeeded to the feudal barony of Gartmore in the 17th century; and following the death of the last Bontine male heir in 1770, inherited the Bontine estates and feudal barony of Ardoch. The family, to meet the requirements of the Bontine entail, became the only non-peerage family to have a different surname from their father, using the Bontine name, arms and the designation of Ardoch until their father s death, when they reverted to Graham of Gartmore. In recent years the family have taken to adding the Bontine to the middle of the name on succeeding. Graham of Gartmore The current armiger, a contender for Chief of Clan Cunningham. Following the death of John 15th (and last) Earl of Glencairn in 1796, Robert Graham of Gartmore (poet and Whig MP) - who was Lord Rector of Glasgow University between Edmund Burke and Adam Smith - inherited the Finlaystone Estates under an entail of William, 12th Earl, that required him to assume the name and arms of Cunninghame. The family used the two sets of arms side by side for more than 175 years and continue to use the two names side by side without hyphenation. The most famous Graham of Gartmore was R B (Don Roberto) Cunninghame Graham, who was variously a gaucho in Argentina, the first openly socialist MP and first President of both the Scottish Labour Party and the National Party for Scotland, as well as a prolific author. 3 Page 3 A C E L E B R A T I O N O F S C O T T I S H H E R A L D R Y Now that we have published The International Register of Arms Volume One in book format we are working on publishing a volume dedicated to a celebration of Scottish Arms. Romilly Squire of Rubislaw, co-author of Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia, is assisting us in our production of this new book which is scheduled for publication in anticipation of the 340th anniversary of the Lyon King of Arms Act The Armorial Register Limited, publishers of The International Register of Arms, is inviting the submission of digital photographic material for the publication of a fully illustrated prestigious book dedicated to the many practical ways in which Scottish Armigers of today enjoy and demonstrate their personal armorial bearings. If your arms are recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland you are invited to submit photographs, along with as much detail as you wish, of any armorial item you have made use of be it your Letters Patent, library painting, crest badge, seal matrix, flag, cutlery, dirks, sporrans, engraved items As a bare minimum we would request that you illustrate your entry with an original grant of arms or matriculation document (we would be happy to blank out addresses etc if you so wish). From our own collections we have put together a number of examples which we feel would be of interest to enthusiasts throughout the world and which would also benefit your favoured heraldic artists and craftsmen. Participation in this project is free (although obviously there will be a cost associated with the purchase of the actual book if participants wish to acquire one). Full details of the project, along with a current list of all those who have kindly submitted material for the book, can be found on our dedicated website: Notes: Entry into "A Celebration of Scottish Heraldry" is FREE. In preparation to filling in the Online Inclusion Form you may wish to consider having the following pre-prepared. 5 Page 5 F E A T U R E W E B S I T E - T H E S O C I E T Y O F H E R A L D I C A R T S Our featured website for this edition of the Newsletter is that our good friend the heraldic artist Ljubodrag Grujic. Ljubodrag is talented artist who has executed commission for many of the existing registrants in The Armorial Register: he introduces himself, on is website, thus: My name is Ljubodrag Ljubomira Grujic (Grujich, depending what kind of transliteration is used), or for short Ljubodrag Grujic (pronounced Lyoob-uh-drahg Grooyich), and I came to this world as the only child to Ljiljana and Ljubomir Grujic on 31st December I finished high school in my hometown Pancevo in Banat (Serbia) and later on Faculty of Philology (Department of English Language and Literature Studies) at University of Belgrade. My mundane occupation is a high school teacher in my hometown, as I believe in helping the local community the way I can. Apart from English and to a lesser extent French, my true linguistic interest lies with one very small and ancient language, Irish (Gaelic or Gaeilge) and I devote considerable amount of my spare time to that language and culture attached to it. During the misfortunate 90s in ex-yugoslavia I had been helping the Serbian refugees from Croatia that settled in my hometown by organizing humanitarian and educational help on the behalf of one Swiss organization, which coupled with my mixed origin lead to some passive knowledge of German, a rather tragic linguistic mishmash. In the past two years I ve been trying to get some basic grip on Russian, but numerous obligations prevent me taking that path more seriously for the time being. He presents an impressive C.V. and we have included here a small snapshot for your perusal: 29th August 2008 appointed Heraldic Artist to the Royal House of Bagration- Muhranski of Georgia. During 2008 he became a member of Society of Serbian Armigers and later on was elected into the editorial staff of the journal of the Society, Ocilo. 28th November 2009 elected to the position of Corresponding Member of the Serbian Heraldic Society "White Eagle" (Serbian Society for Heraldry, Genealogy, Phaleristics and Vexillology "White Eagle"). 27th January 2010 signed servicing contract with the General Secretariat of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the production of the book of standards (etalon) of the arms and the flag of the Republic of Serbia. The commission unanimously voted for my proposals on 16th April The work continued on the production of the BOOK of GRAPHIC STANDARDS of the IN- SIGNIA of the REPUBLIC OF SERBIA and its OFFICIALS, which consists of 49 pages with 47 graphic solutions. I had the honour of working on this project with the legend of Serbian heraldry, Mr Dragomir Acovic. 3rd September 2010 elected vice-president of the Society of Serbian Armigers at Society s assembly. Oh, and just in case I forgot to mention, his artwork is pretty impressive too - pour yourself a coffee and check out his website:

7 Cheshire Heraldry is pleased to announce the publication of CHESHIRE HERALDRY THE VISITATIONS OF 1533 TO 1580 CHESHIRE HERALDRY THE VISITATIONS OF 1533 TO 1580 Published by The Armorial Register Limited. This volume features 350 colour illustrations of the armorial bearings recorded at the Heralds' Visitations of Cheshire in the years 1533, 1566 and 1580 along with a fragment of the records of the Visitation of the City of Chester in 1591 as published in 1882 by the Harleian Society. The book published by the Harleian Society contains few illustrations and those that are included are in black and white. Although the visitations contained a collection of pedigrees of families with the right to bear arms this work confines itself to their armorial bearings alone. The author has simply attempted to turn the written description of the arms (the blazon) into a coloured illustration for every relevant entry. Available from most good bookstores RRP Or direct from the author at only plus P&P. To order online with credit/debit card via PayPal at: or direct from: Regent Villa London Road St. Georges Telford TF2 9LH. UK Postage & Packing Total UK price inc P&P Cheques should be made payable to Martin Goldstraw. If paying by cheque please allow time for your payment to clear before the book is posted.
