Visitors can be escorted to parts of the memorial with site staff and details will be posted around the memorial. Location Information: The Memorial is situated centrally on The Hoe which looks directly towards Plymouth Sound. It is accessible at all times. Copies of the Memorial Register are kept at the Tourist Information Office at Island House, 9 The Barbican, Plymouth, PL1 2LS, and also in the Naval Historical Section at Plymouth Library. Historical Information: After the First World War, an appropriate way had to be found of commemorating those members of the Royal Navy who had no known grave, the majority of deaths having occurred at sea where no permanent memorial could be provided. An Admiralty committee recommended that the three manning ports in Great Britain - Chatham, Plymouth and Portsmouth - should each have an identical memorial of unmistakable naval form, an obelisk, which would serve as a leading mark for shipping. The memorials were designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, who had already carried out a considerable amount of work for the Commission, with sculpture by Henry Poole. After the Second World War it was decided that the naval memorials should be extended to provide space for commemorating the naval dead without graves of that war, but since the three sites were dissimilar, a different architectural treatment was required for each. The architect for the Second World War extension at Plymouth was Sir Edward Maufe (who also designed the Air Forces memorial at Runnymede) and the additional sculpture was by Charles Wheeler and William McMillan. In addition to commemorating seamen of the Royal Navy who sailed from Plymouth, the First World War panels also bears the names of sailors from Australia and South Africa; the governments of the other Commonwealth nations chose to commemorate their dead elsewhere, for the most part on memorials in their home ports. After the Second World War, Canada and New Zealand again chose commemoration at home, but the memorial at Plymouth commemorates sailors from all other parts of the Commonwealth. Plymouth Naval Memorial commemorates 7,251 sailors of the First World War and 15,933 of the Second World War. No. of Identified Casualties: 23186

11 General Discussions Goto: Forum List Message List New Topic Search Log In HMS ARBUTUS - SUNK NOT 1942 Posted by: Stewart McLoughlin (IP Logged) Date: February 26, :14PM Can someone please point me in the direction to learn information about the sinking by a German WW1 submarine of HMS AUBUTUS on 15th December, 1917, I believe somewhere in the Bristol Channel area. I am researching our village war memorial and one of our casualties went down on the ARBUTUS. Many thanks Stewart McLoughlin Re: HMS ARBUTUS - SUNK NOT 1942 Posted by: Bruce Dennis (IP Logged) Date: February 26, :10PM The information you are after is in the National Archives, in Kew, west London. See file number:- ADM 137/3292 'Loss of H.M.S. ARBUTUS 1917' TNA is closed for disruptive works to the reading room until the end of March. Hope this helps, Bruce Re: HMS ARBUTUS - SUNK NOT 1942 Posted by: David H (IP Logged) Date: February 26, :35PM The following are the outline details of the loss:

12 The sloop sailed from Milford Haven 14 December to carry out a patrol between the Tuskar Rock and the Smalls Lighthouse following several reports of submarine activity in the area. At 3.30pm on 15 December a submarine was sighted on the surface on the starboard bow, which dived as the sloop approached. Thirty minutes later she was struck by a torpedo on the port side abreast the after boiler room. The explosion killed several stokers and injured several others; the engines were put out of action and the boiler room started to fill with water. A periscope was briefly sighted astern and a depth charge was dropped, but to no obvious effect. The ship took a ten degree list to port but remained afloat. The US destroyer O'Brien (DD.51) closed and lifted off most of the crew, leaving the captain, Commander Charles Herbert Oxlade RNR and Lieutenant Charles Stewart RNR onboard. That complete, a tow was rigged and the O'Brien commenced towing the Arbutus until later that night the tugs Francis Bailey and Margaret Ham arrived to take over towing. At the crews of the tugs heard an explosion and the Arbutus disappeared, the Margaret Ham having to hastily slip the tow to avoid being capsized as the sloop sank. A search revealed only a patch of wreckage. It was believed that she had been torpedoed for a second time. Her attacker had been the UB-65. The position was then 51.38N 05.24W. In all two officers and seven men lost their lives. (info extracted from TNA ADM.137/3292) Re: HMS ARBUTUS - SUNK NOT 1942 Posted by: Stewart McLoughlin (IP Logged) Date: February 27, :41AM Thanks for the offer Bruce (your e.mail) but I hope to get back to the NA's again in the near future. Was only there two weeks ago but went with so much to look at and so many things, including Arbutus, were uncompleted. Shall bear you in mind though if I can't get down. Do wish they'd hurry up with the refurbishment!! Dennis, many thanks for your short history of Arbutus (1917). Strange that Arbutus (1942) should also be sunk in the same general area 25 years later. I've worked out the sinking as about 20 miles s.w. of Milford Haven. One of the stoker casualties came from our village just s.w. of Preston, Lancs, and went past his former home just today. Still searching for relatives. Many thanks. Stewart

Killed in action when in command of the sloop HMS Arbutus which was torpedoed by a U Boat (UB-65) in The Bristol Channel 15 December The twenty-eight Anchusa-class sloops were built under the Emergency War Programme for the Royal Navy in World War I as the final part of the larger "Flower class", which were also referred to as the "Cabbage class", or "Herbaceous Borders". They were single-screw fleet sweeping vessels (sloops) with triple hulls at the bows to give extra protection against loss when working. The Anchusa class of corvettes or convoy sloops were completed in 1917 and They were a small class of convoy protection ships built to look like merchant ships for use as Q-ships in World War I. A surviving example is HMS Saxifrage, completed in 1918 and renamed in 1922 as HMS President. 57 Photo of UB 64 a type III boat SM UB-65 was a Type UB III U-boat of the German Kaiserliche Marine during World War I. Ordered on 20 May 1916, the U-boat was built at the Vulkan Werke shipyard in Hamburg, launched on 26 June 1917, and commissioned on 18 August 1917, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Martin Schelle. During her active career she sailed on six war patrols, sinking six merchant ships and damaging six more. She also sank the British Anchusa-class sloop HMS Arbutus. The U-boat was lost off Padstow, Cornwall on or after 14 July 1918 with the loss of all her 37 crew. An expedition mounted in 2004 as part of the Channel 4 Wreck Detectives underwater archaeological TV series to survey a previously unidentified U-boat wreck that had been located earlier at N WCoordinates: N W, during a routine survey by the Royal Navy, confirmed the identity of the boat as UB-65. Inspection of the wreck by submarine archaeologist Innes McCartney and U-boat historian Dr. Axel Niestlé (through identification of design features such as the type of deck gun, and identification numbers that were stamped on one of her propellers) proved conclusively that the wreck was that of UB-65. A survey of the wreck showed no obvious indication of weapon attack being the cause of loss (although this could not be ruled out; shock damage from a depth charge attack could have caused loss through failure of internal seawater systems and hull penetrations that would not be obvious from an external examination). The aft hatches are open indicating a possible attempt by at least some of the crew to escape from the vessel. Consideration of the various observations of the wreck, along with historical observations regarding depth control and handling difficulties on diving experienced by other boats of the class, led to a conclusion that she was most likely lost through accidental causes on or after 14 July 1918, the date of the sinking of a Portuguese vessel in the Padstow area. All of her crew of 37 were listed as lost. Having been identified as UB-65 the wreck was given protected place status under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986 on November 1, Previous beliefs regarding loss The identification of the Padstow U-boat wreck corrected the earlier accepted version of UB-65's loss. According to official German Naval records the boat was presumed lost following a premature explosion of one of her own torpedoes on 10 July 1918, south of the Irish coast.

58 According to United States Navy records it was reported that, whilst returning from patrol and near Fastnet Rock, the U.S. submarine L-2 observed a submarine periscope, followed by an explosion. The sound of small propellers and an underwater signalling device could be heard for a short while after the explosion. The identity of the submarine and the cause of the explosion was not known. After the war the identity of the boat was presumed to be UB-65; cause of loss was unknown but a mine or torpedo from another submarine in the area, or sinking by one of her own torpedoes that malfunctioned were assumed. Indeed, the building of the ship was plagued by disaster, including of asphyxiation of some crew members by diesel fumes and the crushing of two more by a falling girder. These incidents may have given rise to a belief among the crew that the ship was cursed. Some sources state that the German Navy even called a priest on board to exorcise the ship.

61 4, Dudley Close Longton PRESTON PR4 5WH 15 th November, Dear members of the greater Halliwell family. Please find enclosed a copy of the history of Thurston Marmaduke Halliwell, late of His Majesty s Royal Navy. I m sure there is much more and I would hope one day to say that this is the definitive article. No doubt you may spot errors and there are certainly omissions from the line of Henry and Mary Ellen, so if you see any please let me know and I will correct it. Certainly, if there is anything that you do not wish included, again let me know. I should like to complete the family tree to modern times, especially as we have a very young Thurston amongst us carrying the family name forward, and would ask if you can complete your side of it I would be very much obliged. Again if you can add anything to the John and Mary Ellen HATCH line, please let me know for I have been unable to find any of the modern families. You will see that I have included a Ronald Halliwell amongst the Lancashire BMD pages as a potential younger brother of Thurston Marmaduke II, the mother s maiden name being the same, Harrison, but I am not sure if this is the case. The only possible way of confirming or otherwise this information is to purchase the official birth record from the registrar in Preston. As you will appreciate, the cost implications to me buying ( 9.25) BMD certificates for all the people I am researching would be prohibitive, so I have not gone down that line. I have however not included him in the family tree at the end of the book, due to the lack of confirmation. Many thanks to all of you who have contributed to this project (there are over 200 military personnel in the surrounding villages who lost their lives in war) which has been going on now for some 16 years and has involved many hours and miles in an effort to complete. I thoroughly enjoy doing it and it keeps the retired grey matter still active so I don t fall off my perch. Stewart McLoughlin

62 Thurston Marmaduke HALLIWELL was born in Preston in 1899, the eleventh of twelve children to Henry Halliwell (born 1857) and Mary Ellen (France) (born 1860). Henry was a pattern maker in the black trade both being from Preston and married at the Parish Church of St. John in The family lived at various addresses in the Preston area and were shown at 87 Lodge Street, off Marsh Lane opposite Bow Lane, in the last available census of Some time after the census, Marmaduke, as he was known, was to live with his brother John and his family in Rose Bank Cottage. Hutton (alongside the village hall), whilst employed at Bridge s Corn Mill in Preston. Marmaduke, joined the Navy on 17 th July, 1917, aged 18 years, and was subsequently posted as a stoker to HMS Arbutus, variously described as a destroyer/sloop/ Q ship specifically tasked with the hunting of submarines and raiders. (See HMS President moored on the River Thames as a surviving example of the class) Leaving the port of Milford Haven on 14 th December, 1917, she was designated to patrol the area of St. George s Channel and at 3.30pm that day sighted a submarine on her port side. Some thirty minutes later, HMS Arbutus was struck by a torpedo from UB.65 commanded by Kapitanleutnant Martin Schelle, abreast of the after boiler room. A number of sailors were killed whilst others were taken on board rescue ships. HMS Arbutus remained afloat and was admitted under tow by other vessels including a U.S.A. destroyer, but at 2.55am the following morning, after a reported second explosion, possibly another torpedo, she sank some fifteen miles south west of Milford Haven taking with her the commanding officer Charles Herbert Oxlade and the first lieutenant, both having remained on board during the attempted tow. Marmaduke is remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial panel 22, column three, his body and those of his colleagues never being recovered. During the war the family had a number of brothers all serving in various branches of the military, but Marmaduke was the only one not to survive. Halliwell Crescent off Lindle Lane, Hutton, is named in his memory.
