Using every scrap of evidence available, historian Bruce Venter reconstructs the ill-fated Kilpatrick-Dahlgren raid to free Union prisoners of war in Richmond. He convincingly attributes the failure of the raid mainly to Dahlgren s mistakes (some of which were made in Goochland) and finds the young colonel responsible for the notorious orders to assassinate Jefferson Davis and his cabinet. The book is as thrilling as the events it portrays. The Battle of Hubbardton: the Rear Guard Action that Saved America by Dr. Bruce M. Venter $21.99 plus tax. In fact, it was the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont! British and German troops ran into stubborn rebel resistance at Hubbardton in July 1777 and the day would ultimately turn the tide for the Patriot cause. In the fields and hills around Hubbardton, a tenacious American rear guard of about 1,200 derailed British General John Burgoyne s plan for a quick march to Albany and led to his weakened forces ultimately surrendering at Saratoga in October of that year.
