5 Introduction Probably the single biggest challenge that we all face in trying to build a new online business is finding business prospects. In other words, if we want to be successful in making money online, we first need to find customers interested in purchasing whatever it is that we have for sale. Now you could engage in things like cold calling where you call various businesses or individuals who might be interested in your products, but let s face it that s a hard thing to do. Anyone who has ever seen the original Wall Street film knows that cold calling is a grinding business and one that you don t want to engage in. You may also want to simply put up a website, do some SEO and then hope that people buy your product. This would in essence be the equivalent of running a physical store and doing advertising but never making any kind of a connection with your customers other than taking their money and bagging their purchases. Anyone who has ever run a store will tell you that this is a terrible business strategy. 3

6 However, there is a way to get prospects to keep coming back again and again, eagerly buying whatever your latest product offering is. What is this magic? It s called list building and it is one of the oldest and most effective methods of making money online. The Money Is In the List If you ve spent any significant amount of time working in the online marketing world, you will likely have heard this phrase. The money is indeed in the list. Building a list of buyers as opposed to simply hoping people will keep coming back without any other push is just asking for your business to be a success. Seriously even if all you get is around 500 visitors a month, if you can engage with those 500 visitors and get around 1-2% of them to become steady customers, that builds a steady business. Don t engage with them and you may make a single sale to them but you will quickly find that they forget who you are and never come back to visit your website. People Buy from People, Not Companies Now the other thing to remember (and something that many, many people who try their hand at online marketing fail to realize) is that you cannot be anonymous and successful online. Sure, if you have the money to create a competitor to Amazon. com, nobody will care if you make a personal connection with them. However, for most of us running a small online business, the personal connection is what makes people come back. Think about your favorite restaurant. You know the one maybe they make really good sushi or they have great sandwiches or the perfect steak. Odds are good that you don t JUST come back because the food is good. Few places can engender the 4

7 kind of loyalty that Seinfeld s Soup Nazi could engender if they didn t also have a personality which feels welcoming and inviting. You go to the restaurant as much for the ambience and the interaction with your favorite waiter or chef as you go for the food. Your online website pretty much has to operate on the same principle yes, you need a good product. However, you also need to make a personal connection with your customers. That is what keeps people coming back time after time instead of dropping in one time and then forgetting that you exist. It s the personal connection. A Word of Warning Before we begin discussing how this works, a word of warning: there is no magic bullet. We cannot offer you a magic button to push which will have truckloads of money backing down your driveway next week. Anyone who tells you they can offer you such a magic button is lying and trying to steal your money. No, that is not an exaggeration. We know very well that there are many people online making specific income claims, down to the penny. These people are telling you how much they made with their system (if indeed they are telling you the truth many, many of them simply lie). This means nothing about how much you stand to earn. In fact, the odds are good that by the time you learn their trick for making money online, the trick has been played out and is not making much money anymore. Instead of offering you tricks for specific niches, what we ll offer you here are solid ways to get more customers to sign up for your list regardless of what your niche is. Some of these ideas may work better than others but we promise you that all of them are tried and true methods and can work for a wide variety of niches. They won t make you rich overnight but if you play your cards right, they will make you money over time. 5

8 Making Your Initial Approach to Customers Your Online Business Card We ll talk about real business cards in a moment because they are important to talk about as well however, for the moment, let s talk about your online business card. In essence, your online business card is the impression that your website offers initially when people see it. Is it one which engenders confidence and makes them want to stick around? Or is your site one which people take one look at and then run screaming for the hills? If you want people to keep coming back to your site, you need one which is welcoming and easy to navigate. Forget the fancy flash and other stuff. That looks interesting and exciting the first time you see it. The 10th time, you want to kick in the screen because you are so sick of seeing the cutesy opening sequence. This is why most major business websites include a simple opening if they have an opening at all. Of course, part of list building will involve having some kind of an opening which is engaging. However, it should not be one which annoys people. It should also be set up so it doesn t keep showing up every time a repeat visitor drops by your website. Your website programmer can help you with making this happen. 6

9 A Word about Physical Business Cards Now before we move on to specific techniques for list building, a quick word about business cards, the physical kind, is important. Some businesses will definitely have a need for physical business cards in addition to running a website. So for example if you run a law office, you want to have a good website which catches people s interests. It should also have a blog which provides interesting legal news so that your clients will want to drop by regularly. This will also ensure they think of you when they actually need an attorney. However, equally important is the impression you make with your physical business cards. You want to create cards that stand out from those of your competition. Otherwise, they will be lost in the pile of cards people get when they look at attorneys (and of course, this applies to most businesses where you meet clients in person). So what makes a good business card? Three elements are necessary if you want to get people to think of your company as their go to source: They Need to Engender Confidence Sticking with the lawyer example, your business cards should look impressive, with good quality stock and raised lettering. Color ink is a good idea as well. They Need to Be Useful Everyone can write on their cards that they do personal injury work. If you put on the back of the card a quick checklist for what to do after an accident, your card is the one that is likely to be kept and noticed first following a car accident. Your firm is also more likely to be chosen because you show your potential clients that you understand the business. They Need to Stand Out This is the trickiest part of business cards. You want a card which stands out from the crowd without looking silly. So a pink business card with flowers on it may stand out but our theoretical attorney is unlikely to get many sales because of this. On the other hand, some distinctive characteristic (rounded corners for example, which are an option for business cards) may be just the thing. We let people know that they have one. 7

10 The Squeeze Page So just what is a squeeze page anyway? In essence, it s a page which is designed to squeeze your customer for a sale. This is the page where people will arrive initially when you want them to sign up for your list. It will sometimes be quite elaborate and other times very simple. The page will in essence be a place to advertise why your mailing list is one that the person really must sign up for. You can offer a free product in exchange for getting people to sign up (for example, something similar to this PDF report, though this specific one is copyright of the List Guy and cannot be used), a low priced product or a high value product. In all cases, you are basically going to showcase what your product is about and why people would want to buy it. The basic layout of a squeeze page involves putting in some kind of introduction (video intros are quite popular these days) followed by a bullet list of the best things that your product has to offer. You then include a call to action. The call to action should be something which tells people that they should act now by signing up for your list. More on that in a moment. Here are some cool ideas to help you in building a quality squeeze page: 8

11 Keep It Simple, Stupid One of the best ideas that anyone ever came up with in the realm of squeeze pages or pretty much anything to do with any kind of marketing is the KISS principle. In essence, what you want is to keep things as simple as you possibly can. This way, you are that much more likely to get people interested in what you have for sale. Too often, people think that a squeeze page needs to be ridiculously long in order to grab attention. This might be true for a narrow segment of products; however, the majority of squeeze pages would do well to be as simple and elegant as possible. The idea is that you simply want to make your squeeze page one which offers some basic ideas to why your product is great while still going into enough detail to satisfy those who want to know more. Depending on how much your product costs, you may also need to include more information. If you want to sell a product for $1,000, you need to provide a whole lot more of a reason for someone to shell out their money than if you wanted to sell a product which costs 99 cents. The basic style remains the same though you want to include an introduction, bullet points and testimonials. There is no need to give your entire life story though. It may also be a good idea to include a video introduction to your product so that those who like such things can see it Getting the Address Building a squeeze page means creating a way to grab people s addresses. However, there is a very big problem with this people often give throwaway addresses which they will never check again after they get whatever free gift you are offering them in exchange for signing up. This defeats the very purpose of the squeeze page and will 9

12 not help you at all with your list building efforts. The way to fix this problem is to give your customers a reason to give you a quality address. Several options exist for this: 1. You can offer them a quality newsletter. This used to work better in years past than it does now. These days, people see the term newsletter and assume it is going to be a pitch for whatever junk you want to sell them. You can get around this by offering a free sample of the newsletter that people can see so they ll know what you offer is worth looking at. 2. You can create a subscription. The second option, which frankly works better, is to create a subscription as the free gift. This could mean that they get four free gifts, one per week during the first month they re on your list (after that first month, they re more likely to stick with you if you give them something good). Or, you could also consider the possibility of offering a course as the free gift a course which is delivered via . Generally, it is best to stick with a weekly schedule as that gives people a frequent enough course to remember you without being too much so that it is overwhelming. Remember the 80/20 Principle The so called 80/20 principle means that your list should get around 80% useful content which they can enjoy without you getting benefit and around 20% advertising. While this will not necessarily help you to get quality addresses through your squeeze page, it will allow you to keep customers happy. Those who follow this principle find that their lists are more responsive and buy more from them than those who simply spam their lists endlessly with advertising for whatever product they want to sell. Keep Things Personal While you do not need to include your whole life story on your squeeze page, it is a good idea to make things feel more personal. People tend to prefer buying from an actual person as opposed to buying from a faceless corporation. Try to include a picture of yourself (something business appropriate unless you are selling adult entertainment or some other such thing in which case you likely don t want a picture of yourself ). 10

13 It is also a good idea to include a signature on the squeeze page. For whatever reason, people tend to think that this makes you seem more trustworthy. Finally, you want to include a personal guarantee. If you were to offer your customers a product for sale, it is usually better to include a personal guarantee which tells your customers that they needn t worry they can take a refund if they want it. If you play your cards right though, it is rare that you will get a refund request. The only exception are the so called serial refunders who buy a product only for the purpose of making a copy and then sharing with a million of their closest friends. You can combat these people by creating a blacklist of people who may not purchase from you as well as by offering your customers a reason to stick (i.e. as mentioned above, that your free gift is a subscription of some form). The Call to Action The call to action is probably the single most important and most neglected part of your squeeze page. This where you tell people to actually make a purchase or sign up for your mailing list. Your call to action needs to be one which grabs people s attention and gives them a good reason to want to sign up. Here are two examples of a call to action: Give Us Your Address for a Free Report The above is not horrible but it has no pizazz. People will see it and shrug. Why should I care about your free report anyway? Why should I click the button and hand you my address? The first thing that you need to do is make it personal to your specific niche. So for example, if you were putting together a squeeze page where you want people to sign up for a course on list building, you might instead have an opt in button which says: 11

14 Yes, I Want to Learn How to Get Lots of Rabid Buyers Onto My List. Send Me My Free Report Now! You could even make it a bit longer and add in: So I can start finally making money online. By the way, whatever you do, do not leave the submit button with the word submit. It looks awful. Instead, consider the possibility of making it say something like Give it to me now. You Need a Privacy Policy Finally, it is absolutely imperative that your squeeze page include a privacy policy. You need to specify exactly what you will do with people s addresses and why they should not have to worry about handing it over to you. If you do plan to offer the list to others, you need to explain why and under what circumstances you will do so. You should also mention that you will never sell the list though you may occasionally offer products to them from advertising partners whom you think they might enjoy hearing from. Bottom Line The bottom line is that your squeeze page needs to give your customers a good reason to hand over their address. Without such a reason, the best list building techniques in the world will be worthless because nobody will ever want to sign up. 12

15 Getting Customers to Find Your Squeeze Page Okay, so we ve talked about how to create a squeeze page and why you need one. Now we need to talk about the specifics of how to get people to find the thing to begin with. These are tried and true techniques which will help you to build your mailing list quickly: JV Giveaways One of the best and easiest ways to get people to sign up for any mailing list is to use JV Giveaways. Now before you go thinking that this has something to do with football (as in Junior Varsity ), JV actually stands for joint venture. You re not really going to create a joint venture though. Doing so would require that you create a company together with partners, hold meetings and get all kinds of licenses. Instead, you ll be doing something which could better be described as joint advertising. 13

16 In essence, the way a JV Giveaway works is that you sign up for an event where several different people in the same niche agree to all advertise their products (as well as yours) to their own mailing lists. The idea is that you will get their customers to sign up for your mailing list and they will in exchange get your customers to sign up for their mailing list. So why would your customers or their sign up? Because you give something away. As we said when we discussed the idea of creating a squeeze page, you are going to offer some kind of free gift in order to entice people to sign up for your mailing list. This is basically a giant junket for your already existing list where you offer them dozens of freebies in exchange for signing up for other lists. The more people on the JV Giveaway, the less likely you are to get people so you want to find events which are relatively small. There are three ways to find and sign up for these deals. One is to simply do a Google search for JV Giveaway events in your niche. This may turn up some smaller, private ones. You could also do the same thing on services like the Warrior Forum where these events are often advertised. The second way to find JV Giveaways is to check out sites that specialize in advertising them. One popular option for this is newjvgiveaways.com. This site actually maintains lists of JV Giveaway events you can join and tells you which niche they work in. Be forewarned though the make money online niche is the most heavily listed. Finally, you could also run your own JV Giveaway event by using a software program called WP Venture. This is a WordPress plugin which lets you organize the event yourself. The big advantage is that you get to be the first offer on the JV Giveaway meaning you get more signups than anyone else. The bad part is that you do need to find partners for the giveaway event. 14

17 YouTube Clicks This is another great way to grab visitors to your squeeze page without the need to spend a great deal of money or time. In essence, what you are going to do is to pay someone else to let you advertise on their YouTube videos. There are thousands of hours worth of videos added to YouTube on a daily basis. These videos often are meant to advertise a product. However, just as often, they re posted by people who are enthusiastic about a particular subject and who simply want to share their passion with the world. You can find these videos from people who don t have any advertising on them and then offer to pay them to include a link to your website s squeeze page in their description section. The one thing to do is to look for videos which are already pretty popular. It doesn t pay to grab an ad on a video which has 200 views. Look for the one that has at least 20,000 views and which seems to be growing steadily. You can often get the owners of these videos to let you stick an ad onto their videos for just a few dollars. Then, watch the clicks (and the signups to your list) roll in. Advertising to a List This is a similar concept to what ListGuy does. At ListGuy, we allow you to rent a mailing list. In essence, this concept, also known as solo ads involves having someone with a list send out an ad to their list offering your product for sale. They then include tracking code which checks how often your ad was clicked. You pay them for a specific number of clicks and when that number is up, they stop pushing your site for you. The nice thing about this is that you need not build your own list from scratch. You are in essence grabbing someone else s list and then using it to build up your own list. As noted above, we offer a similar service at ListGuy. However, if you want to find material direct from list owners (not always the best of ideas because the quality 15

18 is never going to be guaranteed 1,000 clicks from freebie seekers who never buy anything is pretty worthless), you can check out soloaddirectory.com. You could also use these kinds of ads to offer some kind of freebie. This gets more people to sign up for your mailing list, though as we already noted, you do need to be concerned about getting too many freebie seekers who are never going to buy anything but who will suck your resources dry. Ad Swaps Yet another way to generate a great many potential leads for your mailing list is through the use of ad swaps. It should be noted that this is NOT the same as the idea of offering to swap links. Many companies offer to swap links with you by asking you to post a link on your site in exchange for a link on their site. This is a big problem though because Google tends to frown on the practice. Ad swaps in essence work in a similar way to making the deal to advertise on someone s list with one twist. Instead of paying cash for the right to have someone send out an to their list (so that they will hopefully get their subscribers to sign up for your list), you barter by offering to do the same to your list. In essence, you send out an on their behalf to your list and they ll do the same to their list. This is a great way to add in new subscribers. There is one caveat with this concept though many people are on multiple lists these days so ad swaps can be less effective than they once were. One way to avoid pitfalls is to look for ad swaps with people who have peripheral services to your own. For example, if you run a company which offers diabetic testing supplies, rather than asking another diabetic testing supply company to send to their list, you might look for a company that specializes in diabetic friendly food. While there will still be some overlap, there is likely to be less of one than if you are in the exact 16

19 same industry. Not to mention the fact that you are less likely to lose your own customers that way. One good site for finding these kinds of ad swap opportunities is safe-swaps.com. Networking without Networking Probably the single best way to grab new subscribers to your list is by getting your existing subscribers to tell their friends about you. Presumably, if you ve offered your subscribers real value for what they get on your mailing list, they ll want to tell their friends what a great deal they got. However, in reality, you often need to sweeten the deal. Offer some kind of an extra freebie for customers who recommend you to five of their friends. For example, if you run a website selling gourmet cookies, you might offer a 10% off coupon to the customer as well as to the customer s friends when they recommend you. In essence, they are getting a better deal and offering a better deal to their friends. The advantage of doing things this way is threefold. First and foremost, by offering your existing customers a coupon code, they are more likely to go ahead and recommend you to their friends. They are also more likely to make another purchase because they have this special deal to use. In addition to this, the friends they tell about your products are more likely to make an initial purchase because they too got a special offer not available to the general public. Finally, by making a special offer available like this, you get rid of one of biggest problems people have with tell a friend deals. People don t like to feel as if they are spamming their friends. However, when you tell them they are actually doing their friends a favor by getting them a special deal which is not offered to the general 17

20 public, they are now giving their friend an inside scoop instead of simply asking them to shill on your behalf. The key here is that the deal you offer should ideally be something that people need to use this special code for instead of one they can find through your own website. Otherwise, people still feel as if they are engaging in a bit of spam. PPC/PPV Advertising This is probably the simplest and most effective way to build up your mailing list though it is also one of the most expensive ways to do so buying PPC/ PPV advertising. PPC stands for pay per click and PPV stands for pay per view (and no, it has nothing to do with sporting events or adult entertainment on your cable box). With PPC advertising, you pay for each time someone clicks your link. This does not guarantee that you will get someone to sign up for your mailing list though people who come through to a good looking squeeze page are more likely to do so. Pay per view advertising means that you pay for a specific number of people to view your ad. The cost is lower but there are no guarantees of getting lots of clicks, never mind signups. In both of these cases, the key is to manage your keywords (find keywords which are not very competitive but which are related to your niche, so for example if you were doing make money online, you would want something less competitive like I need extra cash over the next few months. ). You also want to make sure to manage costs because this can get expensive very quickly. Remember that this kind of advertising does not guarantee sales or even signups to your mailing list. It just offers you the possibility of getting such things. You can get PPC and PPV ads for dozens of vendors. The most popular of the PPC ads is with Google s own Adwords service. PPV, you may want to consider using Adfly. 18

21 Bartering This is actually a really cool idea. It works kind of like the JV Giveaway event ideas without the need to bother with being one of dozens of others on the event. In essence, what you do is grab onto the coattails of someone else. You do it by offering an extra free bonus in exchange for the customers of the person needing to sign up for it. Sometimes, you can even offer a deal where you agree to write the squeeze page for a new product that someone wants to introduce in exchange for getting copied on their mailing list. The possibilities of how to make this happen are virtually endless. The key thing here to keep in mind is that this is going to be a deal that you make with one specific person who does Internet marketing, hopefully in the niche that you want to work on. Finding opportunities such as these may sound tricky at first but it s really not. What you need to do is to look for forums where people in your niche hang out. For example, if you are targeting the make money online niche or for that matter, SEO or any related niche, a perfect place to find people to partner with is on the Warrior Forum. Another way to look at this is that you are in essence offering to become a joint venture partner with someone who is going to put something together. You want to look for a product which seems to be generating lots of interest and which seems to be coming from someone with a good history of releasing winning products. Of course, on the flip side, what you offer in barter needs to be equally good. Don t think that something you developed in 10 minutes is likely to get your name onto a service which the other guy spent tens of thousands of dollars to develop. You will need to offer value if you want to get a barter deal like this. 19

22 Cost Per Action Another form of marketing, which is actually one of the most effective, though it is also the most costly as far as acquiring a new customer, is the cost per action. In essence, this means that you create a list of affiliates who will sell your product for you and you in turn will pay them a percentage of whatever it is that you earn from the product. The big advantage here is that you can build a quality list which has nothing but buyers on it if you so choose. You can for example offer payments only in exchange for paying customers. The disadvantage is that you need to offer a significant amount of money in order to attract quality affiliates. Often, people offer 100% commissions on a relatively inexpensive product (under $10) and then make up for the money they lose by doing upsells (i.e. you have a one-time offer which appears after the person has purchased your product and signed up for your mailing list). You can set these kinds of deals up using your own software or you can use one of the popular marketplace services. Some of the more popular ones are Clickbank, JVZoo and Warrior+. If your product is a physical product rather than a digital product, you may want to take a look at services like Commission Junction and Linkshare. These companies work with places that do physical products as well as with non IM products such as banks and credit cards. Exit Pop Ups If you have not set one up yet, you should make sure that you include an exit pop up on your website. This is a special script which will pop up a window or even a separate page which allows people to sign up for your list before they leave. As with many other ways to grab people s attention, this can be annoying and a turn off to some customers. However, overall, most people report that they get anywhere from 10-30% more 20

23 subscribers because they use pop up scripts. One thing to keep in mind when implementing these kinds of scripts though is to make sure that they don t appear as constant nag screens whenever someone leaves your site. This is especially true when you have people who already signed up or who have been visiting your site for a while. Generally, the scripts (or plugins, if you use WordPress) can be configured to notice people coming from the same IP address and or people who are registered users so that you don t repeatedly nag them. It is also important to make sure that the screen people see when they get an exit pop up is not the same one you offer to your other customers. Some people offer a special discount on whatever the product is that they have on sale in exchange for taking this last chance to sign up. However, at a minimum, it should say something to the effect of, before you, go, can we offer you a free XXX? You should then keep things minimal as far as information required from people visiting the site so that they are more likely to sign up. It may even be a good idea to set up a separate mailing list which will allow you to see that these people signed up through the exit list. This way, you know that you can measure who gives you more return for your effort. Direct Ads This is another very simple way to grab some great referrals to add to your mailing list. You simply need to find blogs which work in your particular industry and offer to purchase advertising on them. Pretty much every niche has multiple blogs available. In some cases, they advertise that they offer to let you advertise on them. In other cases however, they may not tell you. In those cases, you want to look for 21

24 a contact us link and then drop an to the webmaster. Often, it is merely a matter of contacting them and asking for a link on the site to let you put up a link to your squeeze page. The prices are generally fairly inexpensive as well. This is especially true of up and coming blogs which have not quite gotten to the heights of traffic yet. For example, if you wanted to advertise on John Chow s blog, you could spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars. However, to advertise on blogs which are PR2 or PR3, it often costs no more than a few dollars. The easiest way to find blogs to advertise your mailing list on is to simply go to Google and enter your primary keyword along with the word blog. You will find hundreds of blogs for most popular niches. Software This is a really cool idea which is one of the best ways to grab subscribers for your mailing list offering free software. The software does not have to be too expensive to produce either. In fact, you may be able to purchase a PLR (private label rights) product somewhere which can be rebranded with your website s name and information. The way this works is that you integrate into the software a requirement to register before can use the software. This almost always means that people will sign up and give you a real address as opposed to a fake one or one that they use only for spam purposes. Now as to getting the software, as noted above, there are products available for purchase which can be rebranded to your own company. However, the majority of these tend to be in the make money online niche. If you need something in a 22

25 different niche, you can still have a useful product created for just a few dollars and make it go viral. Go to a service such as odesk or Elance and look for a software developer who can create a product for you. Often, they can be created for only a few hundred dollars and sometimes even less if the product idea is relatively simple. These products can then be shared to thousands of file sharing websites all over the Internet. When people download them, they will be asked to register and you get another name on your mailing list. PDF and Slideshows Yet another way to grab subscribers to your list is to use viral PDF documents and slideshows. The way this works is that you create a PDF (or a slideshow) similar to this one. You then spread it far and wide all over the Internet on sites such as Scribd or Slideshare where people will download them and share them with their friends. You can then embed an offer to sign up for your mailing list on the document and allow people to come to you that way. This is a quick and easy way to grab new subscribers without the need to go out and spend a great deal of money. You can either create the PDF report or slideshow yourself or you can go ahead and hire a professional to do the job for you. Depending on how long the PDF or slideshow needs to be, the cost is generally fairly minimal. A good PDF report such as this one can often be made for around $500-$1,000. A shorter report can easily be done in the $200 range by a quality writer. Beware of working with cheaper writers though because they often lack experience or worse, will simply create a copy/past report where they take whole paragraphs from others and copy/paste them to create something to pass off to you. By the time you realize that they ripped you off, they are generally long gone. You should also make sure there is a call to action included in the report so that people will know to come by your site and register for more information instead of simply reading the report or slideshow and then tossing the thing aside. 23

You can actually rent a quality list of prospects to whom you will be able to send out an pitch of your own. The way it works is that you work with a list broker who puts you in touch with the owner of an already existing mailing list. The broker can help you to find the appropriate list for your needs as well as ensure that the list you rent is one which is useful. In essence, this is the same as the idea mentioned above about doing solo ads on someone s list. The key difference here is that by working with a professional list broker instead of working with a list owner directly, you know that you will get a list which is good quality and you know you will get what you paid for. Beware of super cheap list brokers though. These are the people who claim to have lists with over a million s for just $49 or the like. Those kinds of lists are inevitably made up of scraped s (i.e. addresses that people found by trolling through blogs and forums). These kinds of lists are worse than worthless. If you are caught using them, you can get blacklisted as a spammer and in some cases, you can even go to jail due to new anti-spam laws. 24
