FAITH INSTITUTE Faith Institute of Entrepreneurship, Inc. (FIE) was found in March, 2003 to provide a self-sufficiency training program and curriculum to teach entrepreneurship (the mindset of owning a business) to at-risk youth and adults. This mindset of self-sufficiency will enable at-risk youth and adults to think making-a-job vs. "getting-a-job. This training institution will also provide a life-skill, selfesteem self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship training curriculum that will enable at-risk youth and adults to makea-job.
Workshop Facilitator Our workshop trainer for 50 Best Home-Based Businesses for People Over 50 Workshop is D. Harold Greene, the Executive Director of Faith Institute of Entrepreneurship, Inc, and the author of the nationally and internationally selling The Rites of Passage for Males Manual (University Press of America / Hamilton Books, 2008). He is also the author and publisher of the Finding My Life Purpose Manual (Faith Publishing, 2010, Empowering Parents of At-risk Males Manual, (Faith Publishing, 2009), 50 Best Home-Based Businesses for People Over 50, (Faith Publishing, 2008) Create Your Own Job! Manual (Faith Publishing, 2008) and A Practical Guide to Grant Writing & Fundraising Manual (Faith Publishing, 2008). He is a former continuing education faculty member at three Community Colleges in Maryland. He is a Master Trainer of the Life-skills, Self-esteem and Selfsufficiency training programs offered by Faith Institute of Entrepreneurship. He is an entrepreneurship, career and life skills training consultant.
Become the Master of Your Destiny Out of ambition or necessity, more than a million boomers every year start working for themselves. Find out whether you have a head for business and what business your career skills and interest will make into a successful business for you. If you are in a great job, but you are bored with it; you are getting ready to retire or you are retired, why in the world would you want to venture into the competitive hotbed of small business?
Become the Master of Your Destiny Deferred Life Plan? It could be a deferred life plan. You ve always wanted to be in control of your life and run your own show. You may be saying, Well, it s now or never. Boredom? You are bored with your present job or you are burnt out from your present job and you just need a change. Retirement Economics? You want to retire, but you can t afford to retire on a fixed income. You need more income. Lifestyle Retirement? You want to retire and you can afford to retire, but you want something to keep you busy and active other than getting a part-time job or traveling. You need some spice in your life.
It s Time? You ve always dreamed of and wanted your own business. The kids are grown. Your finances are right. Let s do it! Of course, there are other reasons why you want to venture out into the world of small business and guess what? You are not alone. This midlife leap to business owner is actually a move more and more people your age are making.
It s Time? Having skills is one thing; being able to use them successfully to launch a business is another. The failure rate for a small business that is launched is that one-third of all start-ups fail within two years. Fewer than half are still going after four years.
It s Time? In the United States, middle aged people are more likely than anyone else to start a business, according to a study by the Ewing Marion Kaufman Foundation, a center for research and education in entrepreneurship. The same study showed that in a single month in 2005 nearly 110,000 middle-aged people started their own business, stepping away from established careers, starting a sideline, or unretiring. That s more than 1 million graying entrepreneur s born-or reborn-each year.
It s Time? Plus, the study found that older entrepreneurs have a distinct advantage over younger competitors. They have wisdom forged by experience. An entrepreneur has to use a combination of wisdom and technical knowledge to succeed. If you just have technical expertise that is not enough.
Entrepreneurship Requirements Highly effective entrepreneurs are shrewd judges of strengths and weaknesses, most especially their own, and they share an import set of traits: (1) An Eye for Possibilities You must think outside the box. Identifying opportunities that others miss is a signal trait of successful entrepreneurship. Without this spark, other qualities that define you as a successful business innovator would be useless. Finding the niche that is needed by consumers or businesses is the key to your success.
Entrepreneurship Requirements (2) A Take-Charge Attitude The second most common trait among entrepreneurs is their compulsion to run their own show. They have the initiative and had it even as employees. The impulse to be a boss has more to do with freedom than power. And there is no stopping those who get the bug.
Entrepreneurship Requirements (3) Comfort with Chaos As much as they relish their independence, entrepreneurs anticipate and even enjoy the curve balls that life throws. They fully expect to scramble to survive. They thrive on chaos-and see advantage in every messy situation. Figuring out quick solutions to emergencies became a way of life.
Entrepreneurship Requirements (4) The Tenacity of a Pit Bull Without tenacity-a term used to encompass persistence and passionmost businesses would never come to be. There are just too many unpleasant jolts in starting a company to keep on going unless you are the human equivalent of a pit bull.
Entrepreneurship Requirements (5) Creative Instincts Most business owners showed entrepreneurial flair at a very young age and had many businesses in their life history. (6) Enormous Self-confidence Entrepreneurs are always striving to start the perfect business. Their dream is to make their business into multi-million dollar conglomerate.
Entrepreneurship Requirements (7) A Practical Bent Yes, entrepreneurs are dreamers, but they are also logical. You can dream, but if you don t have research to support your dreams, you will not succeed in business. Entrepreneurs are a rational breed, better described as risk managers than risk takers. They don t roll the dice. They don t pursue wild schemes. They take calculated risk.
Entrepreneurship Requirements (8) Super Resiliency Learning from failure is a lesson every entrepreneur eventually learns. They realize that failure is something that you just have to go through.
Entrepreneurial Potential Test Can you cut it? Do you have at least six (6) or more these traits? Are you cut out for a small business? Some of us are naturals at starting and running a business. 29 Getting Started In these days, it's becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet with just one source of income. Thus, more and more people are investigating the possibilities of starting their own extra income business. Many of these part-time endeavors are started and operated from the comfort and privacy of the home.
Getting Started Most of these people are making the extra money they need. Some have wisely and carefully built these extra income efforts into full-time, very profitable businesses. Others are just keeping busy, having fun, and enjoying life as never before. More importantly, they are doing something other than waiting for the government to give them a handout - they are improving their lot in life. You can do it, too!
Earning Extra Income The fields of mail order selling, multi-level marketing, and in-home party sales have never been more popular. If any of these kinds of extra income producing ideas appeal to you, then you owe it to yourself to check them out. But these aren't the only businesses you can start and operate from home with little or no investment, and in which you can learn as you go.
Earning Extra Income If you type, you can start a home based word processing or secretarial service. If you have a truck or access to a trailer, you can start a clean-up, hauling, or apartment moving service. Simply collecting old newspapers from your neighbors can get you started in the paper recycling business, one of the hottest new businesses in this age of environmental consciousness. More than a few enterprising folks have found success and fortune by starting home and apartment cleaning services.
Earning Extra Income If you have a yard full of flowers, you can make good extra money by supplying fresh cut flowers to restaurants and offices in your area on a regular basis. Your green thumb could also prompt you to begin an office plant care service. You might turn a ceramics hobby into a lucrative personalized coffee mug business. Whatever your ability, there's literally no end to the ways you can start and operate a profitable extra income business from your home.
Defining Your Market The first thing you must do, however, is some basic market research. Find out for yourself, first-hand, just how many people there are in your area who are interested in your proposed product or service, and would be "willing to stand in line to pay money for it." This is known as defining your market and pin-pointing your customers. If after checking around and talking about your idea with many people over a period of one to three months, you get the idea that there is a market for your business or service; your next effort should be directed toward the detailing of your business plan.
Your Business Plan The more precise and detailed your plan - covering all the bases relating to how you'll do everything that needs to be done - the easier it's going to be for you to attain success. Such a plan should show your start-up investment needs, an advertising plan, production costs and procedures, a detailed sales program, and exactly how your time will be allocated.
Your Business Plan Too often enthusiastic and ambitious entrepreneurs jump in on an extra income project and suddenly find that the costs are beyond their abilities and the time requirements more than they can meet. It pays to lay it all out on paper before you get involved, and the clearer you can visualize everything before you start, the better your chances for success.
Your Business Plan Now, assuming you've got your market targeted and you will know who your customers are going to be, determine exactly how you're going to reach them with your product or service. Will you advertise in the newspaper? National magazines? On radio? Television? Itemize all your costs and time requirements. If it all looks good, set your plan in motion and start making money.
Your Business Plan Here is the most important "secret" of starting and building a profitable home based business, so read very carefully. Regardless of what kind of business you start, you must have the capital and the available time to sustain your business through the first six months of operation.
Your Business Plan No matter what, do not count on receiving or spending any money coming in from your business on yourself or for your non-business expenses or bills during those first six months. All the income from your operation during this initial period should be reinvested in the business in order for it to grow and reach your planned first year potential.
Your Business Plan Once you've passed that first six month milestone, you can set up a monthly salary for yourself and begin enjoying the fruits of your labor. If you've got your business plan properly organized and have implemented the plan, you should at the end of your first year and be able to begin thinking about hiring other people to assume some of your workload.
You Are Top Dog Remember: Starting a successful business is not a means towards either a job for yourself or a way to keep busy. It should be regarded as the beginning of an enterprise that will grow and prosper, with you as the top dog. Eventually, you'll have other people doing all the work for you, even running the entire operation, while you vacation in the Bahamas or Hawaii and collect regular income from your initial efforts.
