Copy Writing 51. ios Development Note: I ll also add the following: Accounting, bookkeeping and human resources. There are lot of them on Upwork. Don t be intimidated!! Most of these can be learned on your own. You don t need to go to a formal school. If you don t have skills for any of these, now is the time to begin researching. 5
Fill out this table: (I have filled out one as an example) Careers for You as Per DISC Result Skills that you are good at Skills that you enjoy doing Skills that are in high demand Sales Writing Drawing Customer Service Drawing Blogging Social Media Marketing Blog Writing Do you see the connection here? As per the example above, this person will most likely enjoy being in Social Media Marketing and Blogging. If he is good artist its most likely that he is also creative in some areas too. Pretty useful in creating social media posters. More detailed skills are listed on step 2 below. Those are listed in detailed categories to help you narrow your choices down. 6
Step 2: What kind of Freelance Job Do I want to Do? This is in support for the details of jobs on step 1. To those who said they don t have skill, if you are reading this then you know how to use the internet. You know how to use social media (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. ), and you know how to type. Best if you know MS Office. All you have to do is to spend time studying and researching. Don t limit yourself, you can do it! The following categories are those available in Upwork alone. Choose which ones you are most interested in, make it to a maximum of 10. Encircle the letters or write them down. You ll see the same list when you register in Upwork. Web development Web design Web programming Ecommerce UI design Website QA Website Project Management Other-web development Writing and Translation Technical writing Website content Blog and article writing Copywriting Other-writing and translation Translation Creative Writing Customer Service Customer service and support Technical support Phone support Other-customer service Order processing 7
Software Development Desktop applications Game development Scripts and utilities Software plug-ins Mobile Apps Application interface design Software project management Software QA VOIP Other-software development Administrative Support Data entry Personal assistant Web research response handling Other-administrative support Transcription Sales and Marketing Advertising marketing SEM-Search engine marketing SMM-Social media marketing PR-public relation Telemarketing and telesales Market research and surveys Sales and lead generation Other-sales and marketing SEO-Search Engine Optimization Business plans and Marketing Strategy Networking and Information systems Network administration DBA-database administration Server administration Other-networking and information systems ERP/CRM implementation 8
Design and multimedia Graphic design Logo design Illustration Print design 3d Modelling and CAD Audio Production Video production Voice talent Animation Other-design and multimedia Presentations Engineering & Technical design Business Services Accounting HR/Payroll Financial services and planning Payment Processing Legal Project management Business consulting Recruiting Statistical analysis Other- business services Bookkeeping 9
Step 3: Study your list. Are you already familiar with the tasks? Spend some time researching about those tasks in Google or better yet, register in Upwork and see what kind of jobs are open in those categories. You will have an idea then what kinds of jobs are being offered and what skills you need to improve. Or if you are not familiar with the skill, you need to spend time researching and studying. For example, I want accounting jobs. If you search for it, accounting jobs online require knowledge of Quickbooks, XERO or MYOB. There are many businesses that just require Excel but still, you will be able to leverage better if you know these top three systems. How do you study? Use Google. There are even Youtube tutorials for those. Once you became familiar, list them down as your new skills. My Chosen Categories My Skill Assessment (What do I know about my chosen category) Are there more skills that I need to learn? List below 10
Step 4: While you are researching, spend time now creating your portfolio. Head over to wordpress.com and register for a free account. Create your portfolio depending on your chosen field. Example, if you are a web developer, create a site showing your design skills. Another way is to create tutorials of the tools I mentioned in the book. If you can find other online tools you can use it too. This is for a Virtual assistant/sales and Marketing/ Administrative Support Categories. Feel free to create tutorials too even if you are not aiming to get jobs from the said categories. The more portfolio you have the better. Step 5: If you haven t done so yet, please register on my site ( to receive free about other Freelancing skills. You will need this later. 11
Step 6: How to Create Tutorials (skip this step if you don t like to create tutorials, like you have other portfolio in mind) 1. Choose your 5-10 tools. Minimum of 5 please. 2. Go to their websites and study how they work. Tutorials are also available when you google it. You can start the search by How to use.,and results will appear. 3. Open Powerpoint 4. Now your own tutorial begins! For every page, be sure to just include ONE step. (see book for example). Do not crowd your tutorial that it s hard to understand. How to get your image? Use print screen (ctrl + Print screen, then go to Paint and Paste, or install Clipular or Evernote s Skitch in your Chrome browser) to save your screen capture. 5. Your image needs to be big enough to read, as well as your font. Minimum size is 20px. You can either use red arrows or red circle or square to point out. Be consistent though. 6. Continue finishing your tutorial, save, and then check it again. Ask yourself, if I visit this tutorial, will I understand what s in there? Is it easy to follow? 7. Convert your presentations to pdf. (you can download primopdf if you don t have one, its free), or File, Save As, click PDF 8. Go to Slideshare and register. Upload your files. 9. Go to wordpress.com and register for a free account. 10.Embed the uploaded tutorials in your blog. 11.Post one tutorial at a time You can add images in your blog to make it more eyes pleasing. I saw a tutorial before which has animated cat gifs, really cute! You can use your own design 12. Make an About Me Section in your blog. In here you can introduce yourself, make it professional as possible, enough to say more about you but not too revealing. You may or may not include a profile photo. 13. Keep your blog updated with your own freelancing experience, including the books or articles you ve read, trainings and seminars. 12
Step 7: Create your online resume Here is a sample template for you to use. Don t forget to check the book out for tips. (name) (address city and country) Mobile no.: xxxxxxx ( address) Brainbench.com Transcript ID: (fill this out later, optional) Skype ID: Fill this out later Summary: Do not make this too long. 3 sentences are enough. Summary of Technical Skills: Online tools: (from the list I gave you, put here those tools which you have studied or know already) Software: Internet Activities: Mobile: (Windows, etc.) Blogging (insert your site), Facebook, etc. Android and/or IOS Online Work Experience: Year Summary New in this? Mention about your blog and the tools you have studied. If you have received my free s, mention about the Facebook and Twitter pages you made. If you have made posters for social media sharing, mention it here too. Major Accomplishments (Online): Created a blog chronicling my life as a (insert your chosen career virtual assistant, programmer?) note: this is your portfolio Created (no.) of tutorials namely Have created Facebook page, twitter page You can increase this once you ve gotten experience 13
Major Accomplishments (Corporate) this is where you will list down your corporate accomplishments. Just list down the major ones. Trainings List down all the trainings you have received. Including the books and articles you ve read which are related to your online application After you re done, save and print as pdf. File name should be firstname_lastname_resume. Do not make your resume more than three pages. Make it at least one or two pages only. Step 8: Create your online profile in Upwork and Freelancer. If you re a Filipino, you can also register in onlinejobs.ph. You can first start with Upwork, and register with the other two later. Step 9: Take Online Exams in Upwork Brainbench is optional, but best to be taken. Make sure that you have taken these first two exams: Upwork readiness test English proficiency test Afterwards take at least 10 exams related to your field. Just choose the free ones. The more you take the more jobs you can apply to. Step 10: Create a Skype account Reminder: use your own name and do not use a fancy name. This is your professional profile. If your name is taken, put numbers after it. Input your Skype account in your resume. 14
Step 11: Create a Craiglist account and add your resume and portfolio. Note: you can already apply after these steps. Step 12: Create an account in Linked In This is one of the fastest growing social networking sites for professionals. Be sure you are registered! It s highly possible that you get clients here! Choose a professional looking photo. Add your friends Search for companies you are interested in, and join them Add more people Join groups Get your summary going! This is where you market yourself. Determine who your target audience is, and create a summary for them. Imagine you are talking to your target audience. Then go ahead to the Summary section and begin it like this: Are you a business owner, social media entrepreneur, president or director, who s finding it difficult to build your business to its full potential, while attracting long term customers, generating qualified leads and still have your life? This is just a sample. You can change it depending on your field. 15
For the second paragraph, mention their pain No income, no leads? Not enough customers? Is your business experiencing a halt in the sales? Third, Give relief data to their pain 80% of business owners are A recent study shows Imagine how it can give you Fourth, Earn the right You can start by saying As a director of As the founder of I have helped companies like Don t forget to thank those who have added you! In their profile, Linked in will prompt you to endorse them on their skills. Just click Endorse. Write your thank you Later on you will be surprised on how many people shall check your profile, add you and offer you jobs. 16
