Resume Approval 1. Make a Resume Approval appointment with Lisa ASAP. ****The earlier you make this meeting, the better if you wait, it may be hard to get in**** **** Also, please know that you may need more than one meeting with Lisa to APPROVE your resume, so please plan ahead. 2. updated and excellent draft of your resume (in Word) before meeting with Lisa ***follow the format in her Resume Guide, make sure it is a good 4 th draft or so You can also refer to slide 23 for links to Lisa s resume guide, etc.) for help. 3. Have your resume approved and posted on NUcareers NO LATER THAN NOON Fri, Sept 29 th You cannot search for a co-op job on NUCareers until your resume has been approved. It must be approved by this date to be eligible for co-op and to begin a job search.

Time flies fast in this co-op cycle. So this is what you and I need to do I will open enough meeting times to fit in as many appointments as possible before the deadlines, but appointments may still be hard to get and timing VERY tight! So plan ahead (Set up a meeting with me soon). If you cancel an appointment you must do so 24 hours BEFORE the appointment to allow other students time to sign up in your place. Read through this presentation, my previous s, webpage, class handouts, etc. BEFORE asking a question (in case I already told you the answer) I want to help!...my job is to help.. but please be mindful, thoughtful and considerate of everyone s time Process your thoughts before ing me.send me ONE instead of 5. I strive to get back to people quickly I will do my best (please do your best too)

What you need to do I may only be able to meet with each student once (before the resume deadline). So what does that mean?. that means you need to Come see me early on (the early bird gets the worm, and can sign up for another meeting if they need one). Make sure your resume is great before you come see me (get extra help from my webpage or at career development if needed) your resume in WORD (.doc or.docx) well before the meeting (NU students can download it for free) Be on time for the resume approval meeting Be prepared! Meet ALL deadlines! (I will NOT have time to hunt you down and badger you.)

1. Refer to this graphic of the Co-op Job Search Process 2. Search the jobs in NUCareers. **Once you have declared your Intent to co-op and had your resume is approved, you can search for possible co-op jobs. 3. Adjust your search criteria so you can see the jobs you want to see* *See slide 29+ for how to do that 4. Prioritize/Rank the jobs Job Search Prioritizing the jobs (this takes a long time but saves you time in the long run); you can label as many jobs as you like as Very Interested You can create and save personalized searches 5. Choose ( apply to ) your top jobs Choose the top 7 positions you want to have your resume sent to. Check Apply. (these 7 should be the ONLY ones ranked as Apply) 6. these choices (only the top 7 - ranked as Apply) to Lisa. (by NOON Tues, Oct 10 th )

Co-op Work study Some jobs require Co-op Work study clearance to apply. This means that you CANNOT apply unless you have been cleared for it. To be cleared, you must Already be a recipient of Federal Financial Aid be in a co-op Pattern of Attendance (POA) and visit the Student Employment Office (271 Huntington Ave past Panera) to see if you qualify (Most students need to have at least $10,000-15,000 of need - in work study funds for the co-op term) If you get cleared bring the form to Lisa and she will then refer you to the work study jobs you applied to There are limited funds for Co-op Work Study, so even if you are eligible to receive these funds you are not guaranteed a work study job. HINT: Fewer students qualify for this funding.. So if you do get cleared, and apply, you will be competing with a smaller pool of applicants (and a lot of the jobs are really great!!)

Creating your Own Co-op In addition to applying for existing jobs in NUcareers, you can work with other organizations to create your own co-op. Speak with your Co-op Coordinator before contacting a company; he or she can give you informational materials, can look over your cover letter, and can let you know if that company already has a job in NUcareers. If a company already has an existing position in NUcareers, you may NOT contact them individually about setting up your own co-op. If you create your own job and Lisa approves it, Submit the necessary forms before all deadlines.

Global Co-op If you want to do a Global Co-op, you will work directly with your regular co-op faculty coordinator, AND (at right before departure) the GEO (Global Experience Office). There are three Required Workshops for CSSH students pursuing Global Co-op each semester. These sessions will provide vital information on researching, applying and preparing for, and being successful in a co-op outside of the United States. (the first one will be in late September) There are scholarships available to qualified students pursuing global co-ops; apply early in the semester to help you plan. To hear more from students who have done global coops, go to the Global Co-op Networking Fair

Tips for a Successful Co-op Search Keep an open mind about the type of experiences you are willing to apply for, especially for your first co-op. Co-op is a competitive process, and employment is not guaranteed. Be prepared to face some rejection from employers, and to work hard throughout the semester to secure a position. Meet (and or communicate) with your Co-op Coordinator often throughout your search process. Respond quickly to phone calls and s from your Coordinator and from employers.

Hints for a better co-op job search Some companies (especially from Business) do on campus presentations and interviews. (Like EF Education, IHI, The Boston Globe, John Hancock, etc.) Going to an employer presentation helps you know more about the company and make a good impression! - see Co-op calendars by college (like DMSB), they list dates of employer information sessions and visits Career Development holds great workshops throughout the term. They can help a lot!!! Career Fair on Thurs, Oct 5 th 12pm 4pm - Cabot Athletic Center Career Development Walk-in hours for supplemental Resume and Cover Letter critiques: Monday-Friday 1:30 PM 3:30 PM in Stearns

Companies with early deadlines These are a few examples.. Wayfair Hires MANY students every term (such as: Marketing Content, Sales Analytics, Media Solutions, Supply Chain, Merchandising Outreach, Digital Marketing, Human Resources, Event Coordinator, Joss & Main ). They are an online retail company. Students really like working there. Walt Disney World Has an online presentation an overview of opportunities available for Walt Disney World College Program and Advanced internships. The Boston Globe They usually have editorial and marketing positions. They come on campus once and have a meeting. If you do not attend (and complete what they ask you to) you will not be considered (i.e. you cannot apply to these positions after they come on campus.so pay attention and attend if you are interested)

Companies with different processes Some companies require cover letters or statements that need to be attached as packages in NUcareers (this is a good hint that they are usually great and competitive co-ops) Don t let it scare you away follow the directions and complete everything as asked BEFORE the job choice deadline (if you do NOT do what is asked cover letter, etc. you will NOT be able to apply and be sent) Interested in Boston Community Impact Co-ops (BCIC) this was formerly called the CSLP (Community Service Learning Program)? positions include: Rosie s Place, AIDS Action, Food Project, and BMC Pediatric Grow Clinic essays and resumes due by job choice deadline

Screenshots and Tips on How to use NUCareers for Co-op search Go to slide 25 for these slides

What happens after I send my job choices to Lisa? Lisa will respond to your job choices during the week of referrals. (Oct 13 th 21 st ) (Lisa will receive a lot of people/ s to get back to, so please be patient). The job description, or Lisa, will let you know if you need to meet with another co-op coordinator for a cross referral. FYI : If you need a referral before Oct 13 th, Lisa and let her know about the early deadline A Cross referral meeting* means that you are not being considered for this job (resume will not be sent)- until you have met with that person and they have deemed you a good fit. *(this is an extra step but they just want to be able to ensure that they are sending the best candidates to the employers. So do a good job (see cross referral tips)

Stay in touch with Lisa! (at least once a week) to let her know how it is going, if you have gotten interviews, added jobs, etc.) Interview. Good luck! If you do not get a lot of interview requests persist, widen your search, and let Lisa know. If you keep at it, you will most likely succeed! Add more job choices (if needed). Lisa to let her know Interview more. Accept a job. Congratulations! Let Lisa know. Submit any needed forms. Follow up with any other employers you have been in contact with to let them know you are off the market Nice work!

Accepting a Job When offered a job, respond to accept or decline the position within 3 business days. See this flier for more tips. Think it through before you accept a job, because once you have accepted a position, you may NOT change your mind and accept another offer. Let your Co-op Coordinator know as soon as you have accepted a job. Circle back with all other employers that have contacted you and let them know you accepted a different job. Thank them for their interest.

While on co-op: Have fun! Think about what you learned in the classroom. How does it apply? If you have problems, or START to think there is an issue of concern (i.e. you might be fired, sexual harassment or racial discrimination) CALL ME IMMEDIATELY, preferably before you take any action. I need to know and can probably help. There are no vacations while on co-op. You MUST work the entire period (Wed, Jan 3 rd Fri, June 29 th, 2018)**. Some employers may require you to work earlier and/or later. **Note this means you are expected to work with no breaks unless pre-arranged at time of hire, etc. You are asked to do a few things WHILE on co-op (such as confirm your supervisor, create learning outcomes, complete and end of co-op evaluation, etc.) See this link for a compete list, directions, etc.

How to finish co-op: Finish your time there with a smile and great attitude! Get fabulous references! (Maybe do some Informational Interviews with other staff while you are still there) Build your professional network of contacts Use LinkedIn to connect with your colleagues, supervisor, etc. Complete your reflection requirements to get credit for co-op Remember, if you do not finish your co-op (by completing these requirements), you will not get credit for co-op and you will not be allowed to go on another co-op until you have a Satisfactory grade on your previous co-op

Thank You for completing this Mandatory Orientation PowerPoint! Now, in order to be eligible for Spring/Summer co-op with Lisa Worsh you MUST complete this and the Co-op Search and Work Agreement Form (in their entirety) BEFORE tues, Sept 19 th, 2017! Please download and save this PDF so you can refer to it as needed (see following slides for help with NUcareers) Good luck! Please be sure to meet all deadlines and stay in touch. See you soon! Lisa Worsh Cooperative Education Coordinator Sociology, Anthropology, and Human Services L.Worsh@neu.edu

Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, and Human Services Students Co-op How to use NUcareers for your Co-op job search Updated

1. Click on Cooperative Education 2. Be sure to choose the correct Search Set your Intention on NUCareers Term (i.e Spring) 3. Choose the item in the drop down that best describes what you hope to do

Upload your resume 1. Go to Cooperative Education - Co-op Documents 2. Upload your final (approved) resume 3. Label it for the specific term you are searching for (to make it easy to distinguish) i.e Spring resume 4. Make it your Default for that search term

Archive old resumes (so the wrong ones cannot go out by mistake)

Narrowing your selections Clicking on Advanced Search on the Job Search screen will allow you to narrow your options Pay Attention.. Do not apply for a job that requires a car if you don t have one, or for an unpaid position if you need a paid job. If you are only looking at co-ops in the US, choose this so you don t have to wade through a ton of global job choices

Make sure to update your job search profile in NUcareers: include any majors that might have jobs which match your interests (does not have to be limited to your assigned NU major/s). The majors you highlight in NUcareers are what will limit or expand your search the most. Typical types of jobs my students are interested in:

Focus and SAVE your searches Clicking on Advanced Search on the Job Search screen to expand your options Do this by adding other majors (than your own). You can search by Major Clusters or Individual Majors. (the system will default to just your program unless you change this and save the search) Major clusters are groups of majors. When you search by cluster, your search results will return all jobs for majors in that cluster. For example, the College of Social Sciences cluster is composed of all majors in the college (ASL, Ant, CJ, Econ, etc.) Selecting the CSSH cluster is a shortcut to search all of these majors. Be sure to SAVE the search so you can regularly check for the same types of jobs You can also search by individual majors if you are seeking more specific results.

Applying for a job in NUcareers In order to be sent (have your resume considered), you must Apply to the job in NUcareers Read each job description carefully, and do not apply to any jobs for which you are unqualified.

Be sure to apply with the correct resume The first time you apply to a job in Nucareers (during each co-op term), you will create a customized package to apply with. Be sure to choose the resume you want (sp18 co-op resume) Then label this package (sp18 co-op app package) ***The next time you apply to a job you can choose this by applying with an EXISTING app package

Applying for a job in NUcareers Some jobs may require a cover letter or other supplemental material*. *you will not be able to Apply until you have completed this package ALSO, be sure to Apply before the job choice deadline or you will not be considered) (for CSSH jobs the 1 st round of choices are due Tues, Oct 10 th for some other jobs it may be earlier and should be noted within the description)

Checking on a job s status in NUcareers To review the status of your co-op applications: Click on the Cooperative Education menu in the main left navigation. From the co-op dashboard, click the Applications button All of your applications will be displayed in a list. Check the Status column to see the status of a given application.

Slides (help) for later in the co-op search (around early-mid November or so)

Find jobs that want more resumes Search the FEATURED POSTINGS You can find featured postings in TWO ways (see below) 1. Click featured postings OR 2. Click advanced search (see next slide)

Creating a specialized advanced search for featured postings Click advanced search Type in a keyword if you d like to Click the featured postings box Scroll down and choose the majors you want to see (or the colleges )

Or create (and save) a more focused search for featured postings Save the search so you can use it again over and over again Title it so you can remember what the criteria were Click the box (when saving it) to get s about new items this search has found for you
