IEC 60617, Graphical symbols of electromechanical functions for use in following application areas: Circuit diagrams Connection diagrams Function diagrams Installation diagrams Network maps Overview diagrams In installation diagrams differs the representation of typical functions, e.g. switches from representation in circuit diagrams Why? 4 Symbols for installation drawings What is specific with installation symbols? The purpose of graphical symbols in installation diagrams is: To show in building layout where electrical devices are located To inform about the number of wires or cables needed to be installed and connected to the devices (construction stage) To inform about the type of devices (or functions) should be or have been installed in the building To support maintenance of the electric power installation by information about location and function of all connected devices The description above do not differ very much from the use of typical circuit diagrams, but remember in a circuit diagram may the location of a product be indicated by the reference designation, not by the location of the symbol The symbol for use in a circuit diagram is more often intended to show a function rather than a device (product) 4

5 Symbols for installation drawings What is specific with installation symbols? The symbols for use in circuit diagrams, etc typically represents functions while the installation symbols more often represents type of products. Advantage: The user of the diagram will easily understand which apparatus to use Disadvantage: The function represented by the symbol may be difficult to grasp The symbols will often be unclear and be of no use when new technology changes the represented products 5

Compared to circuit diagrams symbols the installation symbols: are less detailed than symbols for circuit diagram do not show all connection points or terminals on a device amount of symbols available in IEC DB is lower than symbols for circuit diagrams 6

10 How to apply mnemonics to the symbols Do we need a separate mnemonic library? Today we have the group (application) Qualifiers only, including symbols representing the qualifier of a basic function, activity, process or generic device, etc. The qualifier can be presented as a mnemonic. PT 42 have prepared a list of mnemonics to be used in IEC 60617DB. The list may be released in a IEC Technical report. 3/1023/Q Report 10
