The writing in general is awkward, so much so that it's hard to believe this is by the same author. There are some rather astoundingly stupid scenarios as well - for example the main characters cover up an international drug smuggling incident and help the bad guys (really truly nasty characters with no redeeming qualities) get out of the country in order to protect their own business deal.
