1 My website - JohnPost.US Elementary clay and painting lessons, art teaching philosophy, videos, glaze recipes and links Pinterest: Twitter: Clay Currently I am using Runyans K-6 Terra Cotta Red clay available here... Your local clay supplier will have a Terra Cotta clay for you to purchase - you donʼt have to use the exact same clay that I use to replicate my success. Glaze Chemicals You can purchase glaze making chemicals at US Pigment. Great prices - fast shipping! 815 Schneider Drive South Elgin, IL Phone: (630) Fax: (630) Shiny Stuff Screens/Sieves Order the 60 mesh sieve and the 100 mesh sieve - these two when used together are the fastest way to screen your glazes. Tips on making Postʼs Cone 1 Majolica Glaze... - Decide how much glaze you wish to make - When I make small batches of glaze I measure in grams. - When I make large bucket size batches of glaze I measure in pounds - it makes weighing go faster - Always add your water to the bucket first. - After the water, add the EPK, this is the clay and it helps keep the rest of the ingredients suspended in the glaze instead of settling out in the bottom of the bucket. - Decide which opacifier to use. Tin Oxide is more expensive but it gives a softer looking white. Superpax or Zircopax cost less and give a brighter white. Only add one opacifier to your glaze batch.

2 John Postʼs Cone 1 White Majolica Glaze Recipe 400 gram batch makes about a pint of glaze - good for testing 5,000 gram batch - fills 1/2 of a 5 gallon bucket 10,000 gram batch - makes a full 5 gallon bucket Water 100ml 400ml 5000ml 10000ml EPK (white clay) 27.2 grams 109 grams 3.0 pounds 6.0 pounds Frit grams 130 grams 3.6 pounds 7.2 pounds Whiting 6.9 grams 28 grams 0.75 pounds 1.5 pounds Feldspar (use Custer, G200, any feldspar will do) 20.6 grams 82 grams 2.25 pounds 4.5 pounds Flint 12.8 grams 51 grams 1.4 pounds 2.8 pounds Add only one of the opacifiers below - not both Tin Oxide gives a softer white, while Superpax or Zircopax yield bright whites. Tin Oxide 7.5 grams 30 grams 0.8 pounds 1.65 pounds Superpax or Zircopax - omit the tin oxide and use superpax instead to keep costs of the glaze lower. 15 grams 60 grams 1.65 pounds 3.3 pounds

3 Chinese Porcelains influenced the development of pottery across North Africa and Europe 1000 years ago years ago Chinese porcelain pottery led to the development of a glazing technique in the Middle East that spread all across North Africa and parts of Europe. This technique is known to us as Majolica. Chinese potters discovered white porcelain clays in the mountains of China. They painted decorative blue imagery over this white clay. Moorish potters in what is now modern day Iraq and Iran were influenced by the Chinese porcelains that they saw being traded. Unfortunately for them, there were no porcelain clay deposits to be found in their region of the world. So they got creative and added tin that was discovered in Turkey into their glazes to make a white base glaze. They glazed their buff and brown clays with this white glaze and then painted colorful decorations over this glaze. In the Islamic religion images of the prophet Mohammed are forbidden. Because of this, mosques are decorated in floral and abstract imagery. The domes on mosques and interior tiles all are decorated with a white glaze that has colored imagery brushed over the top. As Islam spread across North Africa and into Spain, this style of glazing spread along with it. There is an island near Spain called Majorca. This island became a center for pottery production using white glazes with colored imagery brushed over the top. The world Majolica comes from the island of Majorca. As potters on Majorca exported wares across Europe, the Majolica technique influence potters in Italy and the Netherlands who produced their own versions of this type of pottery. In Italy, it is called Majolica or Faience. In the Netherlands it became known as Delft ware.
