3 bath SIMPLY SCONCES SCONCE SAVVY Creating a space in your bath that feels comfortable and imparts a feeling that s fresh and inviting can set the right mood for a spa-like retreat. Be sure to consider the specific tasks that will take place and then select the right lighting for your daily routine. VANITYFAIR Sconces are the ideal way to achieve the even, shadow-free light that s desirable near the vanity. Depending on the fixture type, you can mount lights on the wall flanking the mirror, or even ON the mirror. Choose sconces with light-filtering material, shades or opal glass that help to minimize glare. Here are 4 more easy-to-follow guidelines: Install sconces at eye-level, approximately 66" from the floor (standard guideline). Depending on the amount of light the sconces cast, position them so that the horizontal beams overlap (typically 28" to 40" apart) and produce even, shadow-free light. DIM SOMEInsider tip! Installing dimmers gives your bathroom lighting flexibility by allowing you to control the mood of the space, which increases the luxury quotient. "Dimmers! They are your best friend. 5 bath THE RIGHT LIGHT PRETTY LITTLE LAYERS No question about it, lighting is absolutely crucial to the bathroom. Not only does this imperative space serve as a refuge within your home, it must accomplish several important functions too. Here s a simple breakdown of the key elements that can be layered together to make this small space shine: TASK Task lighting helps you start and end your day with ease and comfort. Many aspects of grooming, from applying makeup to shaving to helping the kids brush their teeth, benefit from a pair of fixtures mounted on either side of a mirror, flanking the sink. This is called cross-illumination and provides shadow-free lighting for the face. 1. AMBIENT Ambient lighting also provides functionality. It delivers an overall illumination by bouncing the light off the ceiling, creating needed brightness as well as a flattering effect to the overall space. Dimming these fixtures also allows you to adjust the intensity of the light depending on how you are using the space or to create a certain mood. 2. ACCENT For a sophisticated setting, choose accent lighting to illuminate the special details that relax and recharge you. 9 HIGH&OUTSIDE When installing fixtures on either side of the mirror is not optimal due to size and installation constraints, mount a fixture directly above the vanity for horizontal illumination. Ideally fixtures will run the width of the mirror and should be installed approximately 75"-80" above the floor. Another helpful tip: a light, bright vanity top will bounce light upward and further reduce shadows. I actually prefer sconces above the vanity, but I think it is really a matter of personal choice. I would suggest keeping the sconces a little higher if you are flanking the vanity so as not to cause unusual shadows while using the mirror.
